Im a competitive powerlifter, about 220, 15% bodyfat, but unlike many lifters I do not sacrifice health for performance. Thus, Im going to see a nutritionist this week about starting on a life-long low calorie/highly nutritious diet. Im sure many of you have heard of the numerous studies that have been done since the 30's on the effects of very low calorie (approx. 40-50% less than what is needed to maintain one's weight), although highly nutritious, diets. They show that not only do can they significantly extend the lifespan of the mammels they've been studied on, but greatly improve the mammal's vitality in old age. For instance a mouse which typically lives 3-4 years w…

I tried googling this, but I couldn't find anything...anyway, I was wondering if anybody knew, why my hair no longer gets bleached by the sun. This seems to be age related, a work colleague noticed the same thing, she used to go very blonde in the summer, but now she stays a mousey brown regardless of sun exposure. It seemed to stop happening when I hit my mid-twenties, if that's any help. Any ideas ? EDIT: I realise melanin production slows with age, but why is my hair no longer bleached by the sun when my hair hasn't changed colour.

hey, i've been a self harmer before, cutting my left wrist, but thankfully i'm passed that now. But the problem is that evey time i get upset, or nervous, i feel my left hand/arm shaking. Like if i hold it up high it starts shaking. I don't think this is a nerve problem since i never cut too deep or for too long. DO u know why does this happen? and how can i help prevent this? thanx

Hi. To be able to function, feed the body, perform properly, what differentiates between eating a $1/lb plain beef steak and a $ 8/lb NewYork steak ? And a plain lettuce, compared with the fanciest and pricey one; chicken compared to pheasant; what are the nutritive differences? A common cheap bean, compared to expensive kinds; tilapia fillet compared to yellowfin tuna fillet; peanuts compared to brasilian nuts... Do they really deserve the price because of nutritive content or is it all about taste or nearly only taste ? Miguel

I've always assumed neurons form networks with each other by reaching out with their dentrites and axon terminals and synapsing onto other neurons, and that these neural networks could change their connections in a similar way - that is, by one set of dendrites or axon terminals disconnecting from one location and moving over to a new location. However, I've read a different method - I've read that neurons change their connections by increasing or decreasing the number of receptors in the synaptic gap. So if a connection was no longer needed, instead of removing the dentrite or axon terminal, the receptors were depleted. Which one of these scenarios is more accura…

Ok, i have a question that my science teacher did not have the least clue. If enzymes speed up the chemical reaction of a "thought". Then do people that learn faster have more enzymes in the brain? Also, if you somehow added enzymes to the brain, would the brain be able to create thoughts faster?

I just observed something weird and intriguing from my own desk chair at which I am sat writing this. Just to clarify, it's one of those kinds with wheels which you can rotate. Ok, I stood up knelt on the chair, closed my eyes and gave it a spin. I then span for a few revolutions until I noticed I stopped, but; after that I was absolutely convinced that I was spinning in the opposite direction. I was not really trying to make sense of what I felt so I did actually think I was spinning for the time I had my eyes shut(I think my common sense just turned off for a second while I felt the sensation). This delusion felt very "physical" to me, I actually felt like I was sp…

i've read now many times about a specific filter between thalamus and cerebrum that prevents the brain of too much incoming signals. this shall include signals that are not necessarry for humans to survice and reproduce. the more incoming impulses the more it is filtered because everything incoming flows from the cerebrum back to thalamus preventing more to enter.. sort of so-called "psychedelic" susbtances like lsd, psilocin, mescaline, ... are capable of removing this filter (i assume due to their serotonine blocking) and let everything get in.. i have not found true scientific reports about this matter, so i give it a try here. has anyone heard about this?

This question is on behalf of a friend. Why is it, when you close your eyes and press on your eye ball, after some time you get white blotches appear, but there are no visible light waves entering the pupil ?

Hi, Well. This is for a story I'm writing. Sorry to be so "scientifically-shallow" in my motives If a person gets stabbed, concidering the fact most abdomen stab dangers are internal bleeding, how long can he survive without someone taking him to a hospital? What can that person do in order to prolong that survival time? I'd appreciate responses, even if it does sound a bit weird of a question.. Thanks guys ~moo

I just heard on radio that a can of soda can contain maybe ten or twelve teaspoons of sugar. Dear God. I have no sugar in my house and eat whole grains and vegetables and good meats. When you are weaned of sugar and salt you appreciate good long-time-constant energy. Do not ask why school teens are crazy. I like a small glass of fruit juice. SCIENTIFICALLY, I noticed a mention of storing fat, pot bellies, etc. Naturally, when the blackberries are ripe in August, you can identify a 'native' of Oregon by the purple stains on their fingers and mouth. Are we built to absorb a lot of input? Fruit sugar is slower to matabolise and this is what matters, as well as insul…

Recently, as in the past week or so, I've literally been sleeping every chance I get. I get home from school, plop down on the couch, and I'm out. I come back from my soccer game, and I'm sleeping like a log. And then I stay up to about midnight each night because of it and have to get up at six for school. Any idea what is causing this? My parents are starting to suspect drugs... I think I'm going to get in major trouble soon.

I'm learned ambidextor and I was bored one day so I wanted to see what the internet had to say about the subject. Thusly, I came across this: http://www.linkshaender-beratung.de/english/Ambidextrous.htm. Does anyone have anything to say about this? Have I permanently damaged myself? I'm actually pretty worried...

Here's one for ya.. I work rotation a shifts and it seems that the change in sleep pattern (not the lack of sleep) kills me when I go from working the graveyard shift to working day shift. When I switch and begin to sleep at night again I can easily crank out 7 hours of sleep but my body feels hungover. Not in the sense that I want to puke but that feeling that something is wrong with my bloodsugar. I can try to prepare for the change by slightly changing my sleep schedule before I go to dayshift yet I will still feel pretty bad for a day or two. Anyone have any answers/ideas/theories as to what causes this?

I'm wondering how it is that we see black when we look skyward at night? I mean, I know enough physics to understand that black is the lack of colored light and is therefore considered not to be a color, but why does the subjective experience of seeing black feel like a color? I'm guess it's because the neural centers for color perception work similarly for black as they do for other colors, but it's just, unlike other color centers that become active when actual colored light enters the eye, the black centers become active when no colored light enters they eye. That is, they are like the "default" neurons that become active when no other neurons are firing. Has there…

Seriously, yesterday , I was pissed. All I remember is some of my frens took me back to my room. I don't even remember who they were. I don't remember what made them take me back. Its seriously freaking me out, cos i just woke up, and dont have any memory of what happened yesterday. I remember only one bit. A rubbish bin on the side of the bed and my frens saying if i needed to puke just roll over to the side. oh yeah, also found a helpful pint of water on my table. Can someone explain this type of memory shutdown or lockdown during extreme alcohol consumption. Is there any way of recovering this data eg. thinking hard enough.....

Instead of getting rid of the stuff you don't need, why does it store it away? Getting fat is an unhealthy thing, so why does our body just keep piling on the stuff that makes us fat and instead of getting it the hell out of there?

Please help me on this problem of mine. If anyone knows the 1 gallon carton of milk is relatively heavy. And 2 of them are heavier. When combined in a plastic bag with thin plastic strip, it hurts on your finger. Well my problem has gone beyond that. I have probably stopped the blood circulation to my ring finger on left hand. And the upper part is numb. this happened at 6 and now its almost 10. Ive slept 3 hrs and hoped that it would get better but somehow it just wont get better. So just wnt to know if thsi is normal and what i might do to make it less numb. Thnx.
