I overheard yesterday a part of some sort of a talk given by Steven Pinker (I was passing through the hallway at my university and I heard it out of a computer in someone's office) and I must have misheard him because what I thought I heard was that he said that if you cut the connection between the two lobes of the brain that you get two consciousnesses in one skull. I know I must have misheard this and I can't find anything with a search on google, but I HAD to ask about this, is there anything like this possible???

well from what I know you have lucid dreams throughout REM sleep. and miscellaneous dreams in non REM sleep as well as dreams/dream like experiences (night terrors for example). so my question is how often do you dream. Based on what I read around you either. 1. Dream constantly thruout sleep. 2. Have either dreams or dreamlike experiences throughout sleep 3. Sometimes dream and sometimes don't dream. Which is it?

Hey guys, I'm new here, so please go easy on me if this has already been asked/answered elsewhere! I did a search but it didn't turn anything up. I need some advice on what the human threshold for visual detection is in terms of stimulus duration. i.e. if I flash a word on a screen for 100ms will I be able to determine what word it was say 80% of the time? Can anyone direct me to any literature on this (again, I've done a search on ScienceDirect/PsycInfo/PubMed etc but couldn't get quality info). Cheers! Tl;dr - What is the shortest time I can flash a word on a screen, and people will be able to correctly report the word 90% of the time?

Can eating hot food (by this I mean high temperature, NOT spicy) cause upset stomach? I'm asking this because I've been told after eating a "hot" meal to drink lots of water because the hot food may upset my stomach... I've never had an upset stomach from eating hot food so I'm not sure why or how it could even cause any problems with my stomach (the food isn't too hot to begin with as I'm able to chew it and swallow it without pain).

I know that an average of 10.7 million ganglion axons are projected to V1 area in layer 4. And through layer 2/3 are feed-forwarded to another regions (V2). But how many axons are projected to v2? What is the ratio input/output. I 'm interested only about the direct feed-forward and not about motor output (layer 5) or feedback output. Same question fro V2 or V3?

In the case of hypothyroidism (at least those cases which result from iodine-deficiency) I am confused as to why it lowers levels of growth hormone. I would expect, since there is a lack of iodine and therefore thyroid hormone, that thyroid stimulating hormone levels would rise. But for this to happen there would have to be lowered levels of somatostatin which would, in turn, result in high levels of growth hormone. This is is evidently not the case though, since iodine-deficiency induced hypothyroidism is shown to cause stunted growth. Can someone please help me explain this?

I have a question, can smoking cause " stomach cramps" I think I have read this before on a health page somewhere, but I am a smoker and no doubt I have found that the older I have become it seems that these stomach cramps get worse.. I even at times have shallow breathing especially when it is cloudy. I have been checked up no signs of cancer in my lungs and my lungs are 100% in good condition. So I am confused on some things about cigarettes.. I have tried stopping at times successfully and I know the health issues cigarettes causes, but not to sure about prolonged stomach cramps. Endoscopy shows no inflammation either.. Thanks in advance..

Well I have a few questions. 1. what percentage of your memories are false? Have there ever been cases where 50% or more of a person's memories are false? 2. Why are some memories of experiences you can imagine/visualize/etc but for others you only remember details but can't really/fully imagine them? 3. Why do people have false memories in dreams? eg sometimes I have perfectly clear false memories and experiences of recollection in my dreams that are not true.

Greetings, This is my first post, and first time on the forums as you can see from my count, but I'm entirely eager for an answer, or well further discussion on a subject I've been entirely obsessive about as of these past few days. I might be in the wrong section of the forum, but these questions are going to lead up to psychological discussion, but first I need some help in understanding a few things before I can ask them. I'm using numbers to organize the answers I receive easily, so please use the numbers I've assigned to the questions. 1. Okay, so I have been reading about monoamine oxidase A, which deaminates norepinephrine (noradrenaline), epinephrine (adr…

Okay I posted this on another forum and got insulted for it. I hope this is the right place to post this thread but I really need help with something that has gone wrong. The other day I unknowingly came close to my laptop screen (closer than usual) and the left side of my head came very close to it. As soon as that happened I felt something odd in my brain. I have been feeling strange since then. having trouble concentrating not getting excited, feeling miserable etc. I think the emf (electro magnetic field) from the computer damaged my brain. I'm very sad as this side of the brain is very important for males and controls all the important functions. Yes the other side i…

I'm having a bit of difficulty understanding the physiology of nerve conduction studies. As described, the device generates a voltage difference beneath a surface electrode which then causes depolarization of neurons deep to the electrode. This allegedly causes action potentials which move proximally or distally and which are detected by another surface electrode. Knowing the time and distance thus allows calculation of a conduction "velocity." First, I vaguely recall being taught that the only way to reliably generate action potentials was by either physically "clamping" a nerve or by inserting a microelectrode into the nerve. To me, it seems like si…

Dear ScienceForums.net, I have a problem with a method I'm trying to replicate for my PhD-thesis in genetics. My goal is to cut out a small piece of brain tissue (ca. 1Mm3) and dissociate the tissue into single cells in suspension. The method for this is given in the article «A manual method for the purification of fluorescently labeled neurons from the mammalian brain (Hempel et al 2007, availiable at http://pdfcast.org/pdf/hempel-et-al-2007-neuron-dissociation )». Briefly, the method involves (I use newborn mice): Cut out a 400 µm section of cortex Incubate section in an enzyme solution that digests proteins (for example «Pronase»; incubation time is longer f…

If I press under my right rib where the ribcage ends, I feel this crunchy feeling under my fingers that shifts around. I wonder if I could be pressing on gallstones, or whether this is anatomically impossible given where I'm pressing my fingers. Is the gallbladder under the 10th rib? Is my suspicion the most likely one? thx

When light travels through the eye and excites the rods and cones, which in turn excites certain nerves depending on the wavelength of the light, how is the image produced received by the brain? Are the messages taken from the optical nerve received by a singular processor in the brain? or is it broken up into many processes/areas?

Hello Members; My questions are directed to anyone who has a good understanding of neurology, and can explain that understanding in layman's terms, as it relates to emotion and memory. Although I believe myself to be intelligent, MS (Multiple Sclerosis) has done a wonderful job of cutting my vocabulary in half and limiting some of my cognitive skills, which includes an inability to learn new technical terms. So I have no hope of learning what I need to know on my own and am asking for help. My interest is in consciousness, but in deference to neurologists, I should state that I am referring to the philosophical definition of consciousness, which would be better na…

Hi, I am starting my dissertation on dorsal nerves of the hand. A part of my project is looking at the transverse diameter of these nerves once dissected. If anyone could help me figure out the best way to approach this in order to have accurate results and keep the integrity of the nerve throughout the process. Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. As will quickly become apparent, I'm not a scientist or medico, but there is something I need to understand in relation to studies I'm doing on a branch of martial arts that deals with so called "pressure points". Kyusho or Dim Mak for those who may know about them. I'm trying to understand the precise nature of a revival technique that is used to bring someone around from a knockout. The recommended method doesn't leave the "victim" with a headache. In part it involves relatively light slapping laterally to the cervical region of the spine. While executing this procedure it's important to avoid two points referred to in acupuncture terms as Gallbladder-20 and…

So whats the difference between biochemical assays and histological ones. I am reading a paper and this is what the sentences says: "...the degree of dementia correlates much better with Abeta assayed biochemically than with histologically determined plaque counts" So histologically means counting the plaques...but then what will the biochemical assay give me?

I hate water, I've never once finished a glass of water in my life. I decided to start drinking water and yesterday I had four glasses. I had to put the mio flavoring in it because otherwise I wouldn't get it down. This morning I woke up feeling like utter crap and it was so hard to get out of bed. I drank three glasses of water throught the day. After the second I started feeling physically sick and I had to lay down. I took a nap and woke up feeling worse than when I had laid down. What I'm wondering is: is this my body detoxing? Could this be psychosomatic, because I feel like I can still taste the water. A mixture of both maybe? Is there something that explai…

Hi, If you give high doses of iodine thyroid hormone synthesis decreases. This means TSH level must increase. TSH function is to cause hyperplasia of the gland and increase vascularity of the gland. So how can iodine decrease vasculariy, when TSH is there to counter it. Thanks

The other day I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed (two and a half were still under the gums, and I noticed afterward that my speech seemed to be slightly improved. What I mean by this is that for a while now I noticed that I had some slight difficulty making the 'roo' sound within a word, for example, the word 'truth' ended up sounding more like simply 'true', but now I no longer seem to be having that 'problem' quite as much, at least I don't think I am. Is there any reason that my wisdom teeth would be affecting my pronunciation like that? Or am I just 'hearing things', as it were?
