Religion
Forum for the discussion and examination of the rational foundations of religion.
Participation in the philosophy and religion forums on SFN is considered a privilege. To maintain a reasonable standard of debate, certain rules must be established. Members who violate these rules despite warnings from staff will no longer be allowed to participate in the religion forums.
Philosophy/religion forum rules:
- Never make it personal.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be in the form of attacks on the believers. This isn't a place to air grievances. Civility and respect towards other members are needed here even more than elsewhere on SFN, even when you disagree.
- Disagreements about beliefs should never be interpreted as attacks on the believers, even when they are. If you can't handle having your beliefs questioned, you don't belong here. If you feel insulted, that does not excuse you from rule 1.a.
- Don't use attacks on evolution, the big bang theory, or any other widely acknowledged scientific staple as a means of proving religious matters. Using scientific reasoning is fine, but there are certain religious questions that science cannot answer for you.
- Do not post if you have already determined that nothing can change your views. This is a forum for discussion, not lectures or debates.
Of course, the general SFN forum rules also apply. If a member consistently violates the general rules in the religion forum (for example, by being consistently off-topic), their access to the religion forum may be revoked.
These conditions are not up for debate, and they must be adhered to by all members. If you don't understand them, ask for advice from a moderator before posting.

You have identified the major problem with the "Does God Exist ?" debates -- there are at least as many unstated concepts of God as there are debaters. I strongly doubt that any consensus on a definition could be reached. Ergo, the debate is pointless. When you address the question on a personal level you are free to formulate your own definition of God. It is on that definition that the outcome of your personal decision process hinges. If you define God as some sort of entity that not only can but with some regularity does intercede in natural physical processes, then there is a great deal of objective evidence that no such God exists. In fact, the existence …

I had an abstract thought as I sometimes do and was wondering why does the universe have to begin? Is there a distinction between when humanity begins and when everything began? Isn’t our time based on the speed the Earth rotates? And all our time is compared to the speed of light. In SI units a second is the distance light travels. And why must there always be a beginning? I have seen arguments on this forum showing why infinity times infinity still equals infinity. So even if the universe did begin isn’t that infinity. In between 2 times isn’t the distance infinity? My point is that did we invent time to explain our world or is it based on observations. And if it is …

Now, faith is proof of things not seen; in other words, that which you say/think but not see is what you believe. I want to give you an idea of who I am. I was an evolutionist, but Christ changed me into a Christian. Many scientists believe the beginning of Universe was about 13.8 billion years ago. A subset of those scientists believe an infinitesimally small, densely packed, super-heated region (point) exploded as the Big Bang, and other scientists believe that nothing exploded as the Big Bang. Regardless of alternative models, such as a cyclically oscillating Universe, I am focusing on the beginning, that is, the origin of the Universe. I believe the Universe is about …

How can creationism counter evolution? What makes intelligent design so "plausible" to the majority of religious Christians?

The Bible is about the vindication of Jehovah God's name through the ransom sacrifice of Christ Jesus. That's the short answer. The long answer is that the tree of the knowledge of good and bad represented, to Adam and Eve, Jehovah God's sovereignty. That is, his right, as our creator, to decide for us what was good and what was bad until we, like children, matured to the point where we could do that for ourselves within the parameters of that sovereignty. Knowledge is facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education; the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject. The knowledge in this case is experience. Good and bad had been…

Many critics of the Bible mistakenly claim that it confuses bats with birds, primarily due to a misinterpretation of Leviticus 11:13-20. The Hebrew word used here, ohph, is often incorrectly translated as "birds" or "fowl." Historically, the English term "fowl" encompassed not only birds but also all winged, flying creatures, including insects and bats. Thus, while "fowl" is an accurate translation, its contemporary usage, which is more limited to birds only, leads to misunderstandings. Here are the key Hebrew terms involved: Ataleph: Specifically means "bat." Ohph: Refers to any flying creature, including birds, bats, and insects. Tsippohr: Generally means "birds." Ayit:…

Religious Teachings You shouldn't trust organized religion of any kind because acceptance en masse always leads to the corruption of the original teachings. Here is how religion works. A belief, philosophy or subjective fact dependent upon faith is proposed and then propagated to the masses. If they are widely accepted, they become useful tools for social and political control. Typically, the original teachings of religion are transmogrified in the process - often for the political control itself - which, through a gradual and insidious process of cultural, social and traditional influence, becomes the paradigm. You see this in the emperor Constantine the Great's politic…

Unyielding faith, a belief so strong and unswerving that it provides comfort and guidance in the face of life's trials seems to be the cornerstone of many religions. But wouldn't that seem to suggest that faith taken to the extreme is the best faith of all? Where does faith cross the line into extremism?

I would like to say that Tibetan monks, especially those in the Himalayas, are great pests, they cause a whole range of serious problems, especially from the spiritual plane. I warn you against these cretins. Buddhists described, on the spiritual plane can be described as morbid cretinisms. The current XIV Dalai Lama is not an incarnation of the superhuman being bodhisattva, but an ordinary man, not even an incarnation of the previous Dalai Lama. Mongoloid may be considered a mentally retarded variety. These buddhist cretins need to be attacked on a spiritual level. Personal spirit has a shape of ordinary body and a size several times larger than an ordinary human. A pers…

If Humans forgot about all Religion, what could the Gods theoretically do about that? I remember once a fascinating moment I read in the Jewish/Christian Bible where someone asked God "What do people do, who don't know you exist?" God replied "I made the Moon for people to Worship" God made a failsafe in case people didn't know him.

Outline of new religion. I assume that God exists. He resides over space where there would be a higher vacuum (vacuum above the cosmic vacuum), which can be treated as nothingness. Some form of God includes the planetary system, above all the Earth and the Sun. Christ was one of his incarnations. There were more such incarnations-avatars than accepted in the Vishnu religion, which mentions only ten avatars. There were probably several dozen of them. It dates back to the appearance of Cro-Magnon Man, approximately 40,000 years ago. Of course, we can assume that there were also incarnations in earlier hominid forms, and there were many of them. Christ is an incarnation of a…

In case you missed it, the Rapture was supposed to happen last week, on or around September 23 or September 24 2025 according to many fundamentalist evangelical Christians https://www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/rapture-bible-christianity-end-times-american-evangelicals-rcna233434 This latest apocalyptic ‘end of days’ prediction began a few years ago with a South African pastor called Joshua Mhlaka who apparently had a dream in 2018 which predicted that Jesus would return to this world on those dates, gather the faithful, and take them all back with him up into heaven. This prediction began to gain enormous traction on TikTok under the viral hashtag #RaptureTok - esp…

For the past sixteen years, I have known that I am the incarnation of God and that if I didn't exist, nothing would. All existence began upon my appearance on Earth in 1980 when I was five years old, and upon my death all things will begin in the exact same way. Check out my website url deleted

if you want to understand religion, you start at the pyramids, all of them. find all ancient texts at these sites and compare it. They all describes the same arrivals in the same way just in different languages, they also all describe the departure in exactly the same way, the meassages all the same. Too much of a coincidence i will say. All the gods at that time also mentioned a higher God or a supreme God, compare and link the dots. Every known God was once on earth and have a name, they were all lesser Gods. Everywhere where there is a pyramid there was a God. When these Gods left they all said the very same things. Do your reseach its interesting, peel of the layers d…

But I think our view of omnipotent is limited. We know science and I often think about physics in church. But I don’t think our science is enough to decried omnipotence. Like when we get to heaven is there a lot of singing? But math and science can be just as much used as a form of worship. Increasing the human understanding, curing a disease (as mentioned) or enjoying what there is to learn. If the gods cannot remind us they are there what are we doing? I don’t mean just where we came from but what are these strange things like science are we doing? If someone finds a pattern in Primes, Guass is not going to say I was so close. Einstein didn’t live long enough to complet…

This is a paper I wrote. I copied it here to discuss it with members of the philosophical/religious forum. Let's discuss. Conclusive Proof of GOD's Existence via Theorem of Universal DeterminismThis proof demonstrates, through rigorous deduction, that tangible reality exists as rational thought in the mind of God, proving God's existence. It uses minimal axioms and derives theorems, including key Theorem of Universal Determinism, step-by-step. For comprehension, each section includes intuitive explanations and analogies; for persuasiveness, notes highlight alignment with experience, science, and philosophy. The proof is mathematically conclusive: the conclusion follows ne…

Background reading: the debunking of Dixon White’s “Conflict Thesis” - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_thesis So, the bulk of history shows Western Christianity to have been at least neutral towards, or indeed supportive of, science as a rule. Coming to interpretation of scripture, there is a very long-standing tradition, dating back to Origen, one of the Fathers of the Church who lived around 200AD, to interpret Genesis as an allegory, i.e. as a piece of literature conveying a meaning, rather than a documentary account to be taken literally. Origen and Jewish scholars of his time in Alexandria, where he lived, had read their Homer and were familiar with the trad…

People say if God did not create human sickness, illness, disease and mental health than the devil created it. There some reference here.. demons as the causes of illness, including fever (Luke 4:39), leprosy (Luke 5:13), and arthritis (Luke 13:11–16)……. So every illness and there are thousands of different illness of the human body is caused by demon the same with mental health. There are millions of different demons and each demon causes own problem like fever, leprosy, arthritis, stomach pain, kidney stones, cold, flue, different cancers or HIV so on. God allows the demon to cause it, because it is free will of the demon just like war on earth it free will.

End Times— 7 Bible Prophecies Yet To Occur Most people dont understand the story and what the purpose of the end times is all about. But as far as the timeline my current view is we will begin the biblical end times starting this fall. The Rev 12 1:2 sign in the heavens occurred 9/23/17 which is the anchor point which puts us in Revelation. This alignment has never occurred before and never will again. The seven year time marker was 9/23/24 which was an important event the summit of the future which if you were paying attention the whole thing revolved around peace and security which triggers the day of the Lord 1 Thesselonians 5. The precursors are sun turning dark …

I was looking at an article a few days ago wherein Michael Johnson of the House of Representatives actually stated that he would like to see the separation of church and state dissolved. I know that he displays himself as a very religious person, but I did not take his comments seriously. I just read an article where it stated that Trump would like to create policy that would support a "Religious Liberty Commission", which would essentially limit or dissolve the separation of church and state. This sounds like a very bad idea to me. Has anyone else heard about this? What do you think? Gee

The following text is an excerpt from my website. You can follow the link (which the moderators removed) to read my views on spirituality, existence, and science. Concerning Christianity, I propose that its adherents covertly believe that “Jesus” resides on Earth and that, upon His death, all existence shall cease and recommence with Him as a young boy. I conjecture that most inhabitants of Earth harbor this notion—that God incarnate dwells among us—yet refrain from acknowledging it. The Christian conviction that He shall resurrect the dead and usher in a new Heaven and Earth speaks unequivocally, in my estimation. I ponder why contemporary society has not exalted an obsc…
