What's going on in the world and how it relates to science.

In their most recent act of compassion, liberal lefties have decided to add Republicans and neoconservative values to the endangered species list.

  2. Politics FAQ & Useful Links This post is intended to be a reference for three kinds of information: 1) How to go about posting on the politics board (rules and guidelines) (coming soon). 2) Helpful links to reference sites that are useful for discussion here. 3) Links to previous discussions on hot topics so you can refer back to how we talking about an issue before. To that end I could use everyone's help, especially with the second and third points, which you can start adding to right now by replying to this thread. This thread will be open but moderated -- I'll be able to see your replies but I'll only tap certain ones for visibility. Others will be …

A pair of new studies has helped pin down how long it took Earth to form, breaking down the final barrier of disagreement over the precise timing but creating a problem for the leading theory of the Moon's formation. Earth reached mature size 30 million years after the Sun's birth, the two independent results show. This is in line with the leading theoretical model and most other indicators. However, this is about 70 million years quicker than what was expected by Moon formation theorists. These researchers' computer models have t…

Let's assume for just a second, that a contract could be agreed upon that would double everyone's net income. It would be based on a new "electronic dollar/pound/whatever" and have the value of the local currency. It would be a "World-owned" electronic currency that cannot be traded (in the money market) since its' value is dependent upon which country it was earned in. Therefore, the contract must include a price freeze on all current technology... including raw materials. New technology can get whatever it can get (name your price). The purpose of this "Supplemental Income" is to boost the economies of the world by giving the people (poor people like me... and you?)…

This thread is here to discuss the possible candidates for the 2008 presidential elections (yeah I got sucked intowatching the regular new yesterday and it was all they were talking about). To get the ball roling Rudy Giuliani (mayor of NYC 92-02) has anounced an exploritory comittee to investigate his chances at winning te presidency. Personally I think he would sweep the national elections because o his strong liberal leanings, charisma, hero status, and he's a republican. However if he ran as a republican he would have a difficult time winning the republican base in the primaries because of his liberal leanings (supports stem cell research, Gay rights, the enviro…

An intact specimen of Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni was caught recently in the waters around Antarctica. It is only the seventh specimen of this species ever found, and only the second found outside of a sperm whale. It was first identified in 1925, but virtually nothing is known about it. The mantle of the half-grown squid is 2.5 meters, by comparison the mantle of the giant squid Architeuthis only grows to about 2.25 meters. They estimate a full grown specimen has a mantle around 4 meters long. Full BBC article here

No, I haven't seen it. Yes, I know there's already a (completely speculative) topic about it. But I just saw a short review of it that I thought was interesting, by Scott Tobias, that maybe answers some of the questions we had back then.

I thought the You might be an extremist... thread was clever, but whats even more fun is to admit that on the inside almost all of us hold an extreme view on one thing or another. Please note: this is a place to confess your own extreme views, not to post other peoples views. And if you try to say that you dont hold some kind of weird view or support something that may be just out of the mainstream of your party, or even worse try to pass yourself off as an "independent", you will be forced to wear a dunce hat for the rest of the day If you want to criticize someone for their extremist views, be nice about it I'll go first: I'm generally a reasonab…

  11. The British Government is in complete chaos, and is on the brink of collapse tonight. PM Boris Johnson has been hit with 38 resignations from his cabinet staff, including the Chancellor of The Exchequer, and the Health Minister in the last 24 hours. A delegation of other cabinet colleagues including the Home Secretary and the replacement Chancellor (who was appointed only yesterday) are said to be at Downing Street tonight trying to persuade the PM to resign - which he is currently refusing to do. Attempting to explain the sequence of scandals which has led to this situation is no simple task, but this article by CNN offers a reasonable overview: https://…

  14. NewScientist is reporting on modified stem cells that produce a cancer-killing chemical that can find and destroy brain tumors. The standard procedure for dealing with brain tumors is surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. The mice injected with the special stem cells lived significantly longer than mice left untreated. One third even developed long term immunity to brain tumors. "Three months after the first tumours were implanted in the surviving mice, the team injected fresh cancerous cells into their brains. All mice remained healthy 120 days later, indicating they had long-term immunity to glioma. Five controls injected simultaneously with the cancerous ce…

Kevin McCarthy’s loss in the ballot to become Speaker of the House marks the first time such a thing has happened in US Congressional history since 1923, when it took 9 ballots to elect Fredrick Gillet (R-Mass) as Speaker of the House. After losing a sixth straight ballot earlier today, Kevin McCarthy reportedly said that he had no problem in breaking the record for the number of ballot attempts on the Speakership. It is not clear however that he understands quite how high that bar might be. In 1855 it took 133 ballots over the course of two months for the 34th Congress to elect Nathaniel Banks as their new presiding officer and Speaker of the House - Anyone car…

The RAF air base at Flyingdales, Yorkshire, is to receive radar software and hardware upgrades to bring it up to spec with the rest of the "Son of Star Wars" system, it was announced yesterday. The UK has now formally - and controversially - agreed to host the system on behalf of the US as part of a missile detection screen designed to give the USA an early warning of incoming attacks from the East. Jeremy Corbin's latest trouble has been caused by some lip readers claiming he called the prime minister a 'stupid woman' under his breath to the person sitting next to him during the PM question time after she failed to answer his questions adequately. He claims he was talking about the whole front bench and said that they were stupid people. There has been outrage about it with claims of hypocrisy and sexism and arguments between differing lip readers as to if he said 'people' or 'woman'. The venomous fake moral outrage has been nauseating.... Putting aside the childishness of calling someone stupid just because they cannot or will not see your side of an argument, th…

“It isn’t red or blue, it’s green” (Rupert Murdoch - CEO Fox News) Back in 1970, a Yale Law professor called Charles A. Reich published a popular best-seller called ‘The Greening of America’. For practically anyone who went to college in the first half of the 1970s at the height of the Vietnam War, the Pentagon papers and the Watergate scandal, this book was a vade mecum of those turbulent times. Often described as a paean to the counterculture, ‘The Greening of America’ contrasted three types of world view: i. The typical values and opinions of rural farmers and small business people in 19th century America ii. The organizational and institutional…

  20. The other day members of the EDL (English Defence League) came to our city to try and extend their campaign of racial violence and anti-immigrant slander in the wake of the Southport killings ten days ago. You may have read about this recent wave of violence across the UK, including a riot in Liverpool the other night where thugs burnt down a local community hub and library in Liverpool because some posts on social media had spread a lie that all the books in the childrens section of the library had been replaced by copies of the Koran - (they hadn’t). When they arrived in our city however, the EDL supporters got a surprise. They had intended to attack a Mercure Tra…

An article in The Atlantic by former Congressman Steve Israel tells an interesting tale of how a complete con-man has become the new Republican Congressman-elect in New York’s 3rd district - one which Steve Israel himself represented for 16 years. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/12/george-santos-fraud-long-island/672587/ George Santos is a character who seems to have stepped straight out of the pages of Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 novel - or its excellent film adaptation starring Matt Damon - ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’(1999). Practically every statement made by this Congressman-elect during his recent election campaign has turned out to be a com…
