We've all seen the slump in the computing sector in the past few years, and yet there are still several sectors whoes IT demands have not been met fully. The best example of which is Life sciences. Although, many research and phramaceutical organisations utilise computing technologies for advanced research managment rather than just word processing and checking e-mails, more organisations are calling for more IT products for the life sciences. Most of the big names, including IBM, SGI and HP and many more, have already started focusing on the Life science sector and see it as a great opportunity for investment. What I find confusing is that Universities haven't pi…

I'm looking for someone who can build user interfaces in Java. I have built this program http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/5726/treesfb8.png It draws trees from variables (it's not quite that straightforward but I will go over the details with you in private chat) that are input to describe how the tree grows. The inputs in my opinion are small in comparison to the endless variety they can create. This is BlueJ's description of my class dependency's http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/2109/treedepskj9.png Once each tree is created whiten the program is stored an array list that contains all the branches for that tree. What I am looking for is someone…

Can the energy crisis not be quantitatively broken down into mathematical functions in its myriad forms, and then solved like a gigantic puzzle? Surely the problem lies not in computer science's inability to process a puzzle that big, a giant leap for human brains but a small step for NASA supercomputers; but in that task of quantifying into mathematical formulae, the specific functions that incorporate the energy crisis?

Hi all, Got this question. Is there a way to guarantee that a data set can be clustered such that it's silhouette coefficient will be greater than a constant? Note that there is no clustering method specified(dbscan, k-means etc.). I have been thinking about this problem for so long and no paper has addressed that.. Sad... Any thoughts will be appreciated.. Thanks so much!

I found an example on Wikepedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayesian_network, but the mathematical formulae are creating problem. Somebody please guide me the example discussed in the wikepedia. Somebody at work said that she can't get a game to load on her computer. She told me that other programs load fine, but this particular game won't. She said that the game is less than a year old, and her computer meets all the requirements. She tried going to My Computer and she got the following error message when trying to access the CD-ROM: She thought that the CD was bad, so she went to the store and bought another one. She said the new CD also has the same problem. She also tried using both CD-ROM drives on her computer but neither one will work with this game. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi guys, I am currently doing a Matlab program for scaled partial pivoting. I looked at my friend's example: % Partial Pivoting for i=1:n-1 for j = i+1:n if (a(j,i)) > (a(i,i)) u=a(i,; a(i,=a(j,; a(j,=u; v=b(i,1); b(i,1)=b(j,1); b(j,1)=v; end end end I was wondering what is the meaning of the :? Previously I have come across a few times this thing, but I don't know what it stands for. Is it some sort of Matlab keyword?

How can same machine take same machine as input(is it same machine taking encoding of itself as input—if that’s the case, what does that means some examples to understand this)? (in Universal Turing Machine, i know it was possible). What does that even mean here? I feel like adding a turing machine flipper is like cheating and should not be allowed as well.

I'm currently choosing between two colleges and their programs. Both are in the computer and network security sector. My primary interests are: Privacy, Data/Information Assurance, Computer & Network Security, Penetration Testing, etc. DSU Teaches: SQL, JavaScript, HTML, XML, Visual Basic, Assembly Language and Linear Programming. It also goes in depth about Databases. Penn State Teaches: C++ and only a little about data. However, Penn State is the much more "known" college; yet I think DSU's program/course load looks better. Here's Penn State's Course List for their program: http://www.worldcampus.psu.edu/degrees-and-certificates/security-and-risk-an…

Hi all Remember that old money cache mechanic sum/multiplication machines in big modern stores few decades ago? They looked like old funny fat typing machine, they had big number keys and mechanic bearing on the right side. Ant that was working on the cache machine would enter a price, turn over the bearing, enter another price, turn the bearing again, ..., and at the end, ant would turn bearing twice and she would have sum of entered prices written on mechanic display on the top of the machine. Those were days... A while ago i came up with idea of making a special kind of visitcard (U know, a little peace of hard paper that business people use to exchange their ph…

Most of the responses to questions such as "How come no autonomous robots allowed to produce stuf outdoors, such as houses?" amount to "Security/safety risks," although autonomous vehicles that operate with controlled environments have shown reduced risk of crashes, so is obvious that the world needs more virus analysis tools to secure us. Most forums gave responses to "What virus analysis tools have local heuristical analysis and/or sandboxes" with as "Huh? WTF is heuristical analysis?", so have included examples of this: Full static analysis + sandbox + CNS = 1 second (approx) for each new executable. With caches, this protects all launches, but past the fir…
