  1. The reason you put / after the URL is simple. If you goto xxx.com/xxx then you are requesting the FILE /xxx. If you put a / after it, then you are requesting the directory /xxx/. An example: http://1veedo.homelinux.com/request <--- FILE http://1veedo.homelinux.com/misc/ <--- FOLDER If you were to leave the / off of misc, you would get a 404. If you were to add one to request, you would get a 404.
  2. I could make'm fit. 5g for Windows, 5g for Linux, whatever size for Tiger. The rest in FAT as a shared partition (/home, /usr, /windows installs, /osx installs, /shared files).
  3. I'm happy just enjoying life. Who needs to ask why? I agree with tree 100%, but who cares? Bruno said the very same thing. Not considering a rock any more important then the pope just made inquisitors angy mister_me's up there preaching about how a godless universe servers no purpose. But honestly. why do we need purpose? Dont any of the "depressed" find joy in anything? Sure, we are material. Our thoughts and emotions are material. But does this make any feeling of consciousness less real? http://www.ebonmusings.org/atheism/lifeofwonder.html I don't really care or think about this very much, but ebonmusings does have a point. Not that I'm being cynical or anything but I'm somewhat of a passive nihilist. This doesn't stop me from caring about life or humanity.
  4. Wait, it's free!? I'm about to go download it myself! BTW postgrep, Apple actually moved to x86. The PPC, I guess, is no longer going to be produced(?) and newer releases aren't going to run on PPC(?) That's just waht I get from the move. They may still make OS X compatible with the other archetecture.

    Ubuntu

You can always install KDE after Ubuntu, like I said above. I like the fact that it gets everything from the internet instead of a CD. Maybe other distros do this, but in Fedora yum is very limited compared to Ubuntu, As for root, you can make a root acount. It just doesn't come like that starndard. I liked it better then fedora for web servers. Defaulty fedora forbids access to directory listings, and does a couple other things I dont like (it takes a while to get the server configured in FC4, IMO). Of course, I'm just running a little web site and FTP.
  6. I have a couple "guided meditation" mp3s I used to listen too. Two were about memory. "You have a powerful memory..." It was actually hypnosis but I was looking for an easier way to meditate. Not sure if it helped my memory any, though.

    Ubuntu

I definitely like Ubuntu. Mainly because of the add/remove programs. In Fedora/RH all the adding and removing is done from their CDs, and not from online. (Please incert FC4 CD 2...) I've found that some of the programs are "older" but if you install an older version of something, it normally takes care of any depensencies -- from there it's easy to select a .deb or tarball and role from there. Fedora does have yum, but the repositories are small. Probably about the size of 4 CDs. (PS, goto http://ubuntuguide.org/#extrarepositories ) Plus, there is no graphical add/remove for yum like there is in Ubuntu. In Fedora I cant get several peices of software I used in Ubuntu compiled or installed due to dependencies. For Gift, I'm using GiftCurs instead of Appolon and GiftToxic/UI. I hate Cures! Btw (not to get a KDE vs gnome started), install KDE and see how much you like it. I think apt-get install KDE will do it for you. Or start up Sympati (whatever it is). My only complaint with Ubuntu is the sound system. "Resource busy..." which is why I installed FC4 in the first place. It wont let you play a song with out queuing all the system bleeps from AIM. So when you stop your music...bling, bling, bling....Plus, it's a pain to watch a movie. I tried everything with this. Installed Xine from source, with libs, messed with the sound system (by reading articles), but in the end it was even more screwed up then before. Maybe you'll have better luck. There is an article on the forums about fixing this. (killall esd...) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=26567 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=44753 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=32063 I dont know, but if you ever get the problem. A quick fix should be killall esd if you dont mind a sound queue backing up but killall never worked for me. I always had to restart the entire sound system until I tried the multiple sounds at once thread.
  8. I'd be freezing in your room. I don't know, I just get cold easy.
  9. Hehe, my bad. I like talking to an actual person. People dont seem interesting online. There has to body language and stuff going on. Only so much of comunication is in actual words. The rest of comunication is transmited in voice tone, facial expresions, etc. I'm even better at debating Creationists in person.
  10. I have a problem editing posts too... But there's a solution for that. Hover over the #X and in the URL look for ?p=xxxxxx Then go to editpost.php?do=editpost&p=x I wish the images would just load, though. Avatars do, but nothing else!
  11. Oh, everybody forgets to eat sometime. If a person's not hungry, then there could be a problem. Maybe you were really busy the past couple days. After a while we can even forget that we're hungry. This is why smelling food is appetizing... (There's a term for this...it's the same reason we forget there's a smell. It's explained along the lines of the sensation not being unique anymore so it's not acknowledged as strongly, or something.)
  12. Is this were being a nerd comes from?
  13. If you meditate when you're ready to go to sleep, it'll be a lot easier. I've never had sleeping problems but I used to be much lighter sleeper and know...Try thinking about nothing, and not moving in your bed. A restless mind wont sleep. Also, you're a teenager? Between certain ages (teens), for some reason, people stay up later. You might find it easier to go to sleep if you went to bed latter (this was my problem). Not necessarily doing anything more then watching TV, but staying up. There's so much evidence for this that many experts are urging schools to start latter so students can get more sleep. After a certain age we start going to bed earlier.
  14. It's not emulating anything, OSX (Tiger) runs on x86 now. Btw, sense when do you need to emulate Linux? It'll even run on an Ipod!

...It should be "Couldn't care less." If you can care less, then you do actually care. But if you cant, then its unimportant.
  17. Conservative as in American politics. It's a rude stenotype that Jews own everything, are good at math, and cheat others. This is just hatred that comes from conservative interpretations of the Bible. Sense Banks are against Christian dogma, Jews set them up. They gave loans. They had power. Christians hatted them. Not saying ps2huang is like that but that's just where the stereotype comes from. He was probably talking about where Germany originally accepted Jews, but latter Martin Luther's apologetics stuff coupled along with resentment towards Jewish influence created the perfect politics for somebody like Hitler to take power. With a bunch of money from the Catholic church, of course... FYI, I know somebody who works for a German company and according to him, their strict society is reflected in company policy. Things like obedience are considered high morals. He says nobody likes the local (German) manager because he's quick to fire people. It has a lot to with "knowing your place and being proud of wherever you are." I think if you listen to them talk, you can hear it in their voice. Rammstein..
  18. Actually Pangloss, you might be interested to know that open source is cheaper as far as TCO is concerned. I agree with you on training, but anymore (as far as Linux vs Windows goes), Windows is more expensive. With 250 users, by using GNU, a company saves $282,894 NOT including liscence cost. This is why knowing Linux is very beneficial in the work place. There is training you can get in things like open office because I've seen adds around the web. There just might not be as many. http://www.dwheeler.com/oss_fs_why.html As for your image, try PNG If you don't want to mess with it, I'll take your word for it. But just to point out, 2000 will not open 2003; 2003 can export it. There is a difference.
  19. This isn’t what I’m talking about. If software from ME didn’t run on XP, then people wouldn’t upgrade. PP 2000 is not compatible with 2004 or any earlier versions of itself. I know this because last year we had to make a power point for English and almost nobody's power point would open. No, “Well this was supposed to do something cool but didn’t.” It just simply wouldn’t open them. Period. The few lucky people that had version 2000 was able to get their’s opened. I was lucky because I had OO save mine in both 2000 and XP. When we tried to get XP power points opened by 2000, it actually told us that we needed to upgrade our current software! When we tried older versions, it just said that it was an incompatible file type. Maybe 2000 will open 2003, but it’s probably the other way around (ie, 2003 will open 2000). If 2000 does open 2003 but nothing else, only God knows why...We were going to go to one of the newer computer labs for everybody with XP at home (giving people with <2000 a buy), but here’s the funny part: I ended up taking home all the power points that wouldn’t play to make them compatible with 2000. If Open Office can open a 2004 power point and save it as 2000 then so can Microsoft. MS, on the other hand, decided not to. So don’t try to tell me that PP is simi-compatible with other versions, because I know better. Of course, they didn’t keep all their functionality, but at least they could be opened after I converted them. I’m not saying that Microsoft always does this, but another item on the incompatibility list is their databases program (access?). The irony here is that there is a program that will convert between the latest database and the others. Between 95, 6.0, and 97, Microsoft maligned their own formatting standards so Word Perfect couldn’t save as their file type. To be fair, WP did the same thing to Word. The difference is that WP was still computable with other versions. Word was not. So for every $50 made by WP, Word made 150 due to upgrade costs. That’s like changing <a> to <s> in IE, it’s just unacceptable. MS even admitted to this once. My mom uses 98 upstairs, with 97 office and if we want it to be read on XP, we have to open it in WP. It’s kind of funny, actually. Anyway, I think Windows 2006 will be compatible software wise with XP, but the next office probably wont. Just like the current one, you can open an older Word document, but it wont let you save it that way. “Your document will be saved as whatever file type. [ok]” (try it, that’s the message you’ll get) This is exactly what I was talking about at the beginning of the post. If Word wouldn’t open XP then nobody would upgrade. But once everybody upgrades, XP will become incompatible because you wont be able to save in anything but RTF, just like right now you can save in RTF 2000/97. The problem is that RTF doesn’t convert very well. Microsoft does this on purpose. Bold, underline, italics go away. No double spacing, or any formating. Instead of tabs, spaces between paragraphs. No headers. And parenthesis, quotes, etc, turn into weird looking symbols. It’s almost like you copied the document into notepad and saved it, except by pasting it in notepad, at least the quotes and parenthesis stay in tact. I actually think that MS will stop all this nonsense when they start loosing their control of the market, but right now they can get away with it. Hey, you guys were talking about XML above...does this mean that I can save a document from Koffice as XML and Word will read it? If so, then MS may already be realizing that they cant keep doing this.
  20. Bootit I found out has a decent partitioning software. It's actually designed to be a bootloader, but you tell it not to install, and it turns into a "manager" or something. Others posted here are probably better but this one does everything you'd expect a partitioner to do.
  21. German settlers came from the East, Asia. Jews moved there for some reason, and Germany accepted them until Martin Luther started the whole Nazi thing. Jews being smart in math is a stereotype, and a rather conservative one. There language was originally from Indo-European setters but blended locally having nothing to do with Hebrew. What else are we missing? Oh, and yeah, Germans have a strict hierarchy like society.
  22. I thought most people knew this. A quick google gave me this page. http://www.microsuck.com/content/whatsbad.shtml#backward Apparently there is talk from Microsoft to make the Xbox incompatible as well. There are entire articles talking about "Why should you upgrade?" bassed around these facts. A more in depth look can be found here, http://www.rje.org/main/sample_articles/ellison_00.pdf
  23. Haha, hoodlums! They make the streets unsafe to walk! Charleston WV is actually kind of weird place to live as far as slang goes. I've met stereotypical hillbillies but around the Charleston area, most people carry a more northern accent. So there's Pennsylvania / northern type dialect as well as hillbilly kindof mixed in. The regional stereotype dialect of WV is actually pretty similar to English slang. I post at IIDB, an atheist or non-religious discussion forum. For those of you who don't know, a lot of the English population (especially the younger percentiles) is secular/atheist so there are a lot at the boards. Some Americans ask what XXX means and most of the time I find that I can answer it. Ask my old WV history teacher and she'll go crazy about WV "preserving" the "high-class" slang of England.
  24. Normally Microsoft isn't. They make things incompatible to require users to upgrade, spening a bunch more money. I think it's funny because Open Office can save powerpoints in both 2000 and the latest version of MS powerpoint, where MS pp can only save in its current version. If I'm not mistaken, it's still on the same bunch of code, but where it went to NT, the filling system adn several other parts of the OS went NTFS. So it really wasn't that drastic of a change; it was more of an alteration trying to get it more stable (for servers). Don't get me wrong, it was a pretty big change, but it wasn't as much software as it was algorithms or methods.
  25. It stoped working again. This is very wierd. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I have firefox specified and everything.
