Looks like Afghanistan is in Taliban hands...or VERY soon to be
That resonated with me, too. They could've fought, but knew they'd be overtaken soon and their decision to battle would lead to consequences / retribution for them and their families. They made a rational calculation to just lay down arms now and increase likelihood of surviving. He'll have a video teleconference with other world leaders today where many (including Boris Johnson from UK) are expected to push him to keep troops in longer. I'm doubtful he'll agree, though might be willing to share the burden if other countries add troops of their own... as you mention... we'll see.

He also has been advocating leaving for over a decade. Even former chairman of the joint chiefs, admiral Mike Mullen, has applauded him for being right on this the whole time when the admiral and other generals were wrong.

Do people with high conscientousness like to work?
How is it that you think those with high conscientiousness scores differ from those with lower scores? Depends entirely on the nature of the work, the individual, and countless other variables.

Covid 19 and the Environment:
Don’t have a link handy, but early in lockdown there was a noticeable drop in soot and smog, much from airlines, but while the rate of CO2 growth had slowed, amount of CO2 still went up. Airlines are flying again now too. Big issue is waste from PPE… lots of masks and gloves etc in landfills.

Delta variant, breakthrough infections and related consequences
I believe it’s the same things that drove the Nazis. Answer that and you can answer this.

Delta variant, breakthrough infections and related consequences
And yet here we are, arguing with people who think masks are more dangerous than Covid and who while frothing at the mouth attack doctors and teachers in parking lots outside of school board meetings for daring to suggest otherwise.

What is Justice?
Thanks, Captain Obvious. My point stands.

What is Justice?
Current events rather strongly suggest otherwise.

Delta variant, breakthrough infections and related consequences
I share your disappointment. My state won’t even allow the school to mandate masks. And parents are thanking them for it. Because masks are child abuse. And freedom! Or something.

Delta variant, breakthrough infections and related consequences
And it’s even worse in Iowa than in Alabama (which was the focus in your link) Again, agree completely. National borders and archaic tribal tendencies, however, mean few (if any) counties are currently coordinating in this way. Your strategy is good, but it lacks a coherent mechanism for getting it operational IMO. The WHO and UN have no authority to force sovereign countries to proceed in this manner, nor are countries volunteering to do so by choice.

The history of Afghanistan is one where hedging bets is important. Most often within a single family, one brother would fight for one side while the other brother would fight for the other… just to cover their bets. It’s unrealistic in my opinion to expect a few years (like 5) of insurrection and crowd control training from the US military to alter that basic fact of their culture that’s existed for hundreds upon hundreds upon hundreds of years.

Delta variant, breakthrough infections and related consequences
To be clear, we’re in violent agreement around the logic of this one. We need the whole world vaccinated or we all suffer collectively. No quarrel. I’ve also watched politics and economics long enough to know that avoiding a 3rd shot booster in the US isn’t going to magically send extra doses to those areas most in need of their 1st. Those countries are lacking shot number 1 due to issues unrelated to the US deciding to offer shot #3 to its citizens (damned near half of whom haven’t even bothered taking shot 1 despite the absolute lack of cost, complexity, or obstacle in doing so). I also want the world vaccinated. I don’t think lack of vaccine supply is the driver of it not happening. I’m essentially struggling with the idea that boosters in the US are the primary barrier to achieving that global vaccination we both agree is desperately needed, especially given all of the vaccines being produced in China, Russia, and elsewhere.

Delta variant, breakthrough infections and related consequences
What’s the evidence that doses already bought and paid for by the US would be shipped to other countries if not used for dose #3 on US citizens? The US has already sent 110 Million doses to other countries and committed to providing 600 Million (over half a billion) doses to the world. That’s quite a bit more than every single other country… combined. Is the suggestion here that this number would automatically inflate to 700 Million if we had instead decided to wait on boosters… and that this would meaningfully alter the outcome?

Those levels don’t remain as high for as long, though. The healing happens quicker ergo less spread

Is Yes the Same as No?
We understand you’re talking nonsense. Little more is needed than to explain why it’s patently absurd, being argued in bad faith, and move on.

Was there another software update recently? The UI feels a bit different. Could maybe be just a recent change in config settings though, I suppose.

It’s PR. They need to show the most positive face to the rest of the world. They’re saying what we want/need to hear. However, it’s still just words. Actions will speak louder.
