" copyright is a creation of statute" what does that mean?
It means someone wrote a law that defines what copyright means. Without that law (or “statute”) then copyright wouldn’t exist. The way copyright gets applied and enforced is dictated by that statute and how courts interpret it.

The next Supreme Court judge
Sadly these days, neither do the house or senate. /rimshot j/k… it’s mostly the senate that’s broken. House is okay, but screwed up due to gerrymandered districts and corrupted rejection of absentee ballots You’ll need to expand your point a bit here, mate. I’m fairly well tuned into and knowledgeable about how these things work in the US system, but don’t follow your intended meaning.

War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
I’ll try to watch it later. Can you provide an executive summary? And to be clear, I’m no fan of these tactics nor a huge advocate for the madman explanation. Just sharing what I see as the most plausible explanations given currently available intel

The next Supreme Court judge
Indeed, but making laws <> overturning laws

The next Supreme Court judge
The Supreme Court in the US is the same. They don’t make laws either.

War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
I accept your point that the country is in decline given how much of the economy is contingent on oil and how much corruption there is (it's basically a mob family writ large into a country where all kickbacks go up to the leader), but as it remains one of the worlds major superpowers with an impressive military, nuclear stockpile, and more than capable cyber army, and as he is single handedly in charge of all of it with zero checks on his power like the Man in the High Castle, I find it a bit hyperbolic to refer to him as "an obsolete remnant of an obsolete system." It's not like Putin is Mugabe in Zimbabwe or something. I tend to agree, but as he's implicitly threatening nuclear strike, and took control of Chernobyl as one of the first things done during the invasion within 24 hours presumably so he could threaten to blow off the concrete bubble that's been built to contain the radioactivity, it's not unreasonable to mention how this may be part of what's preventing Biden and team from putting sanctions DIRECTLY on Putin himself just yet. They're keeping their powder dry where they can, but they're also likely trying not to back him into the type of corner that would result in such "mad" behavior with nukes. Putin isn't a weakling like Trump, but Trump's also not the subject of this thread.

War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
The Pentagon has ordered 7,000 more US troops into Europe, effectively doubling what was sent a few weeks ago.

Recording Of A Dying Human Brain
I don’t disagree with this. I’ve experienced mild versions of my myself repeatedly with extreme hypoglycemic events.

Recording Of A Dying Human Brain
I had basically this exact same thought when reading it. Scanning past experiences to find a way of categorizing this new one.

War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
Again from Axios: The European Union, Australia, Japan, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom are joining the U.S. with similar actions as a "force multiplier," according to the White House. * Russia's largest financial institution will be cut off from the U.S. financial system, reports Axios' Zachary Basu and Oriana Gonzalez. * "Full-blocking" sanctions will be imposed on four additional Russian banks. * New debt restrictions will be imposed on 13 Russian state-owned enterprises and entities that together hold nearly $1.4 trillion in assets. * The U.S. will impose sweeping export controls on technologies critical to the Russian defense sector and broader economy. * Seven Russian elites and their family members who hold some of the highest positions of power in the country will also be sanctioned.

Beds in lieu of seats on airplanes?
Beds take up more space than seats do. Fewer fit

War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
Madman strategy. From wiki: In his 1962 book, Thinking About the Unthinkable, futurist Herman Kahn argued that to "look a little crazy" might be an effective way to induce an adversary to stand down.

Beds in lieu of seats on airplanes?
Of course it's possible, but then the airlines (who run at razer thin margins already) would pull in far less revenue per flight. They could, but won't because the cost/benefit on this is not in the favor of their bottom line... If they could, they'd replace the 3-seats on each side stack with benches in hopes of cramming a 4th or 5th person into them on each side of the craft. They're not incentivized to make our own experience as travelers better by purchasing aircraft from Boeing and Airbus that allow fewer passengers

War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
Yes. He's an autocrat and he has near total control of everything that happens in his country.

War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
Map from a Belarusian journalist of already confirmed strikes from Russia against Ukraine. This is no small "incursion." Invasion seems more apropos

War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
And that's fine, but I don't, and I'm the OP. Cheers, mate

The True Meaning of Reincarnation
It was a reference to a show TheVat had referenced. This was the next line from Cutty. It was serendipitous bc I had just watched it. Inside jokes on text based media are hard for those outside.

- War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
If I may, we had a good run for about 5 years where Trump infected every political thread ever created. Perhaps we can enjoy this brief hiatus until primary season begins later this year when he re-enters public discussion during his fights with new enemies, both invented and real. For now, Biden is president of the US amd this thread was created to discuss the US response. Let’s please remain focused there. Within that US response, the GOP is fracturing over this between legacy republicans who want a strong US international presence and QAnon republicans who want the US to be walled off island disconnected from the modern world. That will force some interesting alliances with Democrats in the US Senate.- International Fleas's v Battle tanks:Psychology/Genetics 101
They already have. Either way, this reads more like a screed or a blog, not a discussion starter… and we really don’t need 2 separate threads on the Russia Ukraine situation even if it didn’t. Stop trolling- The True Meaning of Reincarnation
Guess we’d better start praying for a 12 car pileup on the turnpike because we’re not exactly swimming in livers over here.- War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
Well, these comments clearly didn't age well: Of course. I was making a point, but it's directionally correct for sure. Either way, we can speculate anything we want. He's not president right now and it doesn't matter.- War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
Same here, especially given how much more capable tanks (and helicopters and airplanes, etc.) are today vs during the times of Napoleon. Nah, Trump would be sending US troops to help Putin and would tell Ukraine they will get nothing and like it bc they refused to launch a false investigation into Biden's son.- War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
I tend to agree, and the "at this time" phrase at the end there being the operative term. This won't stop with Ukraine. He's just boiling the frog slowly. He wants to reconstitute the USSR, or at least something extremely similar. This comment from about 3 weeks ago seems to have been prescient and correct. Within 24 hours of the closing ceremonies, Putin made his move - War Games: Russia Takes Ukraine, China Takes Taiwan. US Response?
