  1. Sometimes the truth is scary and needs to be spoken plainly. 40-50 years of using the approach you advocate hasn’t been getting it done
  2. It’s no coincidence that buzzy AIs like ChatGPT and all the rest are called Language Models.
  3. How are we defining "language?" Is it a "language" when two atoms interact to form molecules, or when quarks and subatomic particles engage the various fields in spacetime? Basically, is it "language" when two hydrogens and one oxygen join to form water in an immaculately precise and consistent way? If so, then our own vocabularies and syntax structures and abilities all stem from that same one basic root, IMO.
  4. Paradoxically, these charges will likely lead to a surge in support for Trump (much like we saw when the DOJ seized all of those classified documents from his office)

Likely bc that’s not the part to which I was responding
  6. He already did when he made that post He announced Tuesday. If I were running the team performing the arrest, I’d just do it Monday.
  7. It’s a bit like a coyote
  8. Great post to necro after a decade. Obvious noob or bot obviously trying to stir pots. Tl;dr: Kids can’t consent nor do they ever really have equal power in just about any relationship. Rationalize all you want. That’s tough to get around.

It actually goes by electoral college votes in Maine and Nebraska, neither of which are winner take all stages, and thus districts there are extremely relevant, so be cautious speaking in absolutes. And here I thought it was because they were less popular, push hardest for policies the majority generally oppose, and keep appealing to old uneducated white men plus the most extreme and marginal parts of their base… seemingly without concern about alienating moderate and otherwise independent voters who might be enticed to their side. They lost by 5.8M in ‘92 and again by 8.2M votes to Bill Clinton in ‘96, by 540K votes to Al Gore in 2000, by 9.5M then also again by 5M a second time to Barack Obama, by almost 3M to Hillary Clinton, and again by 7M votes to Joe Biden. Only time Republicans have actually won the popular vote across the last three+ decades is that ONE time when Bush beat Kerry by 3M in 2004, largely due to a country trying to unify behind the Iraq war post 9-11.
  10. For the most part, we’re mostly hairless apes throwing feces at each other. That said, even single celled organisms tend to distinguish between “ouch” and “not ouch” or between “food” and “not food” and likewise between dark and light or hot and cold. Life and chemistry itself seem to be classifying and reacting machines. The categories and distinctions really aren’t the problem though, IMO. It’s how we respond and react to them that matters. For example in another currently relevant context, do we treat trans kids as subhuman scary predators here to slice away the innocence of your own children, or just a different kind of human still deserving of the same love, respect, and protection as everyone else… It’s okay to recognize real differences from the mean, but not okay turning that into a permission structure for BEING mean.

Lol. You and me, both. I had to fire up Netscape to search those names on AltaVista.

I also have been recollecting the split between east and west Germany given the recent experiences across the US. Feels a lot like that, at least the mindsets. The right like to use the phrase “national divorce” because it sounds more palatable than “civil war” or secession, but don’t seem to realize just how very much red states rely on blue states to fund them. Twitter, WhatsApp, TikTok, and related others even more so. Couldn’t agree more with all of this, but it’s also turning into legislation. A bill to ban transgender people from the bathroom most closely aligned with their identity is now on my governors desk awaiting signature (if not signed already).

Indeed, but it sure whips up the base who actually show up to cast their ballots on Election Day. It’s a type of tribal signaling trying to simplify everything down into simple digestible concepts like “them bad” and “us good.” It plays on and plays up people’s fears about non-binary sexuality instead of extinguishing those anxieties through exposure to kind neighbors who identify as such.

Their guidelines are likely rather simple: Ban the books published by competitors of other book publishers who contribute the more to the DeSantis SuperPAC. Fluffing the profits of megadonors is generally a safe bet / parsimonious explanation when we see these woke smokescreens being fanned.
  15. Consider also soaking in buttermilk instead of water
  16. Extremely common in Texas where governor Greg Abbotts Attorney General, Ken Paxton, knows exactly where to bring a case to get the desired red meat outcome for the base. Happens more commonly with blocking immigration policy, but is a core part of their playbook. Might be easier to think of it as a federal case from the start, just one that was initiated by the head lawyer (think you call them Solicitors, or solicitor general in this context) of an individual state and filed against the US federal government itself.
  17. Cue the spam link as next post from another newly created account…
  18. Okay, but do you know how humans work?
  19. We could act like the US milk industry and try getting congress to pass a bill disallowing macadamias from being labeled as “nuts.”

You misspelled Chi… and I misspelled Qi
  21. I have not, but it seems to be a hexagon cut in half. Bottom half used as a tray to receive a full hexagon slice inserted into it for the hive activity.
  22. Indeed, it can. Though there’s also tabletop epoxy, deep pour epoxy, the need to use a gas torch or heat gun to remove bubbles, it’s extremely fickle and temperamental when mixing, requires specific humidity and temperature conditions for proper curing, and it’s probably a more advanced process than the OP is ready to attempt given other info we have (also can look plastic-ey)
  23. Maybe if I hit the lottery. https://lagunatools.com/cnc/fiber-lasers/
