hijack from Magnetically levitated wheels
What are you talking about ? Grumman, even after aquisition and merger with Northrop, has never produced aero engines. It is a totally different area of expertise, and best left to the GE, P&W, RR, Safran, Honeywell, etc. You certainly can't mean the main engines of the F-14, as the main contractor for the propulsion systems was Pratt and Whitney, with the TF-30 for the A model, which would have been superseded by the F-401 in the definitive B model. It was only some 20 years later that the F-14 D model got some advanced technology general Electric engines in the way of the F110-GE-400. Are you maybe talking about the APU ? Maybe, instead of relating stories, and dropping names as to how you personally knew Roy Grumman, you could try to be more clear as to what you are talking about, and post some evidence for your assertions.

The Killing of George Floyd: The Last Straw?
No problem at all with the G Floyd murder conviction, Beecee. D Chauvin got what he deserved. However the current political climate and politicization of these incidents, leads to cases like this Columbus incident. Columbus, Ohio, shooting: Police officer shot and killed a Black teenage girl holding a knife, police say and bodycam videFamily ofo shows - CNN Family, black community leaders, political commmentators, some democrats, and agitators should realize that 'to serve and protect' also applies to the intended victims of the teenage girl who was shot.

The Killing of George Floyd: The Last Straw?
I understand and sympathize, Zap. They'll only listen to votes. But when you only have two parties, the best you can do is vote for the one that will do the least damage, and in the last election that was a no-contest. That doesn't mean democrats shouldn't get called out for doing and saying wrong/stupid stuff.

hijack from Magnetically levitated wheels
I am well famliar with the history of the Grumman F-14 tomcat and how it arose from the stillborn General Dynamics F-111B ( TFX for the Navy ). Magnetic bearings may have been tried for the various pumps, fuel, lubrication, A/C, etc., but they were most certainly not used for any hot cycle propulsion bearings, so I really don't see how 'switching to battery' would deny anyone a firing solution. The F-14 and its fire control radar use the Phoenix missile, a fully active radar homing missile, capable of beyond visual range use in fire-and-forget mode. Other missiles that may have been used, would be the Sparrow, a semi-active radar homng missile which needs the launch aircraft to 'illuminate' the target at least part of the way before its own radar takes over in the terminal phase, and the Sidewinder, an infrared seeker missile with no radar, that homes in on the hot engine efflux of the target. Anyone who claims magnetic pump bearings can defeat those types of missile homing systems, makes me reach for the shovel, as it is a load of crap.

The Killing of George Floyd: The Last Straw?
nd where is the rightful indignation from her fellow democrats? Those same democrats who denounce D Trump and his cohorts for inciting the idiots who marched and lay seige to the capital? Are you happy that your political parties have no integrity and simply play political tit-for-tat ? Wasn't that the whole idea of getting rid of D Trump ? You should demand better from your politicians, because from the outside ( Canada ) it can seem difficult to tell the difference between some democrats and some republicans.

The Killing of George Floyd: The Last Straw?
My apologies for trying to convince you resurrection is real, by bringing this thread back to life. Derek Chauvin has rightfully been found guilty of causing George Floyd's death. The justice system worked the way it was supposed to work, and all's well that ends well. Why then, did the whole process outside of court leave me with such a sour taste in my mouth ? Why were commentators and politicians so willing to politicise the issue? Why is America always looking at things in terms of black and white, republican and democrat viewpoints, instead of in terms of nuanced justice ? If a Republican says "f we don't like the outcome of this process, we need to get more confrontational", everyone lose their shit. It is called an incitement to insurrection ( rightfully so ) and people are still talking about months later. Yet when someone like California's Maxine Waters says almost those exact words regarding a trial, no-one bats an eye. How is that also not incitement to violence, and overturning law by force ? Is incitement to violence and overturning law, acceptable, when you agree with the cause ? M Waters has made quite a few controversial remarks, but everyone seems to give her a pass. Maybe some ( not all ) democrats need to take a good look in the mirror; some of them might be seeing republicans looking back.

Covid overload
Incidentally, I'm one week into my two week quarantine period, and still feeling very tired. But I will do my best to keep my 1st vaccination appointment on May 3rd.
-
Covid overload
Vaccination doesn't just protect you. It reduces the amount of viral shedding, when you are infected, such that you have less severe symptoms, and those exposed to you also experience milder symptoms. I guess it isn't necessary to make sensible posts, if you aren't afraid of being called ignorant.

The Scientific Method?
Not conceivable by a man's mind ???? Maybe you should apply scientific methodology, before making such nonsensical statements; are they magic ? Been locked in the house with Covid-19 for 5 days. No shortness of breath or fever, but aches and pains all over. The amount of laughing, while reading this thread, made those aches worse. It was well worth it

Humans ISOT to habitable Mars 50,000 BC
If Mars was as habitable as the Earth, there would not be any environmental forcings to favor selected mutations. If Mars wasn't habitable, they would all evolve to dead people. In between the two extremes is where the interesting stuff happens. If you provide no information, all you'll get is WAGs.

Should Police Departments Be Given More Money?
This incident was in no way comparable with the G Floyd incident. G Floyd was killed while he was in custidy; D Wright was attempting to flee arrest, on a no- show warrant ( $100000 bail ) of having taken about $800 from someone at gun-point, because he didn't want o go to jail. NOT because he feared for his life. The officer, K Potter may have been stupid in drawing the wrong weapon, but because this is now so political, she will probably get more jail time than the two girls who nonchalantly killed the Uber Eats driver a few weeks back. This is not justice when we totally disregard the responsibility of the 'victim' in the incident. It is simply political appeasement of the mob. edit ( took me a while to come up with this 'angle' )

N dGrasse Tyson bites off more Steak-Umm than he can chew
I just found it interesting ( and funny ) that some social media rep at Steak-Umm ( of all places ! ) had the insight to correct N deGrasse Tyson in such an eloquent and 'truthful' fashion. Seems someone at Steak-Umm is well versed in the scientific method.

Should Police Departments Be Given More Money?
Seems appropriate to re-start this thread after the latest shooting of Daunte Wright outside Minneapolis. By all accounts it seems like a tragic mistake ( manslaughter ? ) where the officer intended to draw her taser but pulled her gun instead and fatally shot D Wright. And as always, I'm going to post an alternative viewpoint to get discussion started. Relatives of D Wright have said "She was supposed to serve and protect", and not shoot people, is the implication. I find it funny how everyone is always aware of other's responsibilities, such as the police's responsibility to 'serve and protect', yet they dismiss their own responsibilities as law abiding citizens. Why did D wright have an expired license sticker? Why did he have an outstanding warrant? Why did he resist arrest and tried to leave ? Why don't the relatives comment about those responsibilities ?( Rhetorical, I know they are grief-stricken ) Granted, none of these are reasons for killing a man, but they started the unfortunate chain of events which resulted in his death. I count at least three ways D Wright could have avoided his shooting. I only count one way she could have avoided shooting him. By all accounts ( so far ) K Potter ( the shooter ) seems like a reputable well-trained officer ( well maybe a little rusty on weapon selection ), so it will be interesting to see if all the people who argue for rehabilitation in the thread about leniency for teenage criminals, want the 'book' thrown at K Potter as revenge, and to set an example ( The protesters certainly do ).

Neal deGrasse Tyson made and amateurish post ( which he should have qualified ), and was soundly rebuked by Steak-Umm's social media postings. I actually find it kind of humorous. Steak-umm's Twitter Account Feuds With Neil deGrasse Tyson Over Science: 'Log Off Bro' (msn.com)

Battleship revival?
To maneuver it needs propulsion and control surfaces. Even active homing ( with built in terminal guidance radar ) were notoriously ineffective, because the rocket fuel was usually spent getting the missile to a high enough speed which the target could not evade. Newer missiles, like the MBDA Meteor, use a rocket to get up to speed, and then a ramjet to sustain and maneuver to the target. So it is not a 'ballistic' missile any longer, and could probably be shot down, or defeated by countermeasures ( simple as turning off your radar ), at the much lower terminal speed.

Paradox of visual and actual positions in space.
Does the 'actual' position even matter ? The fact that it takes light 8 min to travel from the Sun to the Earth, means that all other effects and information are constrained to the same speed; even changes in gravity. IOW, the 'apparent' position already takes the speed of light/information into account. Why go to the extra trouble of using the 'actual' position, and then have to take the speed of light into account ?

Is Suicide right or wrong?
If suicide was linked strongly to physical health, you would think the elderly, being more sickly, would have high suicide rates; the over 65 grouphave the lowest rates. Instead the opposite is true; the highest rates are in the group 25-34, closely followed by the 15-24 group, and then the 35-44 group. This would suggest societal/economic pressures and/or mental health problems. See here The Emergence of Youth Suicide: An Epidemiologic Analysis and Public Health Perspective (annualreviews.org) Disclaimer : I haven't read it, just used the graph to draw my conclusions.

Should leniency on teenage criminals be abolished?
I'm just wondering why you have one standard for teens, and a different one for adults, when your premise that adult thinking can be lacking in both. In Canada we have the Young Offenders Act, where those under 18 are given a 'just-for-show' sentence, which is hardly ever served fully, and their records are sealed, never to be brought up again. Even for things like murder. How does one learn that actions have consequences ?
-
Battleship revival?
The term 'ballistic' implies little, or no, terminal guidance. That makes them very ineffective against targets that can move. Even at Mach 12, the missile would need 15 min to reach the target ( M 3 is approx 2000 mph ). Which at 20 mph, would be 5 miles away from its original position.

Computer hobbies during lockdown
Slapped a 2 GB Raspberry Pi 4B into a passively cooled aluminum case, and, with two old style Nintendo SNES controllers, hooked it up to my big screen TV. Downloaded RetroPi and installed it. Now I' trying to find ROM images for SNES, Nintendo 64 and Game Cube. Not sure of the legality of doing so.

Should leniency on teenage criminals be abolished?
I would argue that for some criminals ( or adults ), the ability to think as an adult doesn't ever come. Should we absolve them of responsibility for their criminal behaviour also ?

April 12th: 1961.
I've never heard of this incident Stringy. The Lightning was a 'rocket with a saddle', and while it had a rather cramped 'office' by American standards, it did use the excellent Martin-Baker Mk.4 ejection seat. I have heard of a vertical ejection where the pilot broke his legs on landing. Take a look at the picture ... Battleship revival?
Wars without human casualties tend to go on as long as money/resources last. My opinion on the matter was formed by an episode of Star Trek:TOS, 'A Taste of Armageddon'. Read the plot here A Taste of Armageddon - Wikipedia And I think it is the wrong direction to be heading. As for battleships, they have evolved. A small aircraft carrier can be as short as 600 ft, with a displacement of 15000 t, and in addition to cannon/missile armament, can field 8-12 L-M F-35B off a ski-ramp deck, for self defense. So who needs a battleship ? Here is a typical example Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi - Wikipedia
