  1. It's traditionally been difficult to talk numbers with people who dismiss reparations out of hand as being discriminatory. Making amends for something done wrong is hardly vague, and in some of these situations (redlining for example), the meat and bones are right there to calculate, so I don't understand why you think it's vague (probably just because I haven't bothered to name numbers). Is it relevant? Is there a number where you would say "That sounds reasonable", and another number where you would say "No way, they don't deserve that much"? Why haven't you provided those numbers? Btw, woke isn't vague at all, but like many things, I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you. Americans are waking up to a great many things about ourselves lately. Are you kidding me? Wiping it up is the ONLY thing you can think of? If one kid spills the other's milk on purpose, I can take his milk away and give it to the other kid, or I can give half a glass to each. I can also pour another glass of milk, and spend some time figuring out how to keep people from maliciously spilling milk, which seems the smartest to me. I don't know what more to say. Your arguments seem to favor many negative elements of our society, and I'm sure many criminals would prefer not to be punished for misdeeds. This has nothing to do with your brothers and being responsible for their actions. This has to do with public responsibility in a democracy for the People. We the People are responsible for what our government does wrong.
  2. I think this is attributable to willful bad arithmetic. Folks that feel this way see reparation/AA as the proverbial two wrongs trying to make a right, rather than a wrong and a right trying to make things even again. They can't tell you why reparations are wrong except through circular arguments about them being racist.
  3. One thing that doesn't help is enforcing some kind of moral superiority by virtue of being "colorblind". Thinking that we can ignore color is a specious stance, one that sounds noble and virtuous, but is not only impossible but also detrimental to society as a whole. Skin color isn't something to be ignored, it's something to be accepted as normal rather than different or dangerous.
  4. ! Moderator Note Don't promote your YT channels here, Michael. It's against our rules. Put a link in your signature, but don't make threads advertising them.
  5. It sounded unreasonable before. Spending 10 years trying to rewrite mainstream physics instead of just studying it, that sounds crazy. I notice some of your assertions require a human observer. What did the universe do before we were here?
  6. ! Moderator Note OK, you're trying to use non-mainstream physics to explain this non-mainstream concept you have. You can't do that in this section. This section is for established Astronomy & Cosmology. I'm moving this to Speculations. You need to support this concept with evidence. It's clear you don't understand spacetime, and you want to introduce new fundamentals into your explanation, so you need to support those as well. I'm unclear on how your idea works better than the science that lets us calculate how to land on an asteroid 170 meters across from hundreds of millions of kilometers away.
  7. ! Moderator Note OK, but this is a science discussion forum, and this is the Evolution section. You "beliefs" are worthless against all the mountains of evidence we have for the process. Evolution is a fact, and the theory describes the observations we've made over centuries. I don't think you understand how strong "theory" is in science. It's not just a guess. If you think you have ANY evidence in support of your beliefs, you can present it in a separate thread IN THE SPECULATIONS SECTION. Be prepared to explain, using evidence, why your ideas should be considered. I'm closing this, since you went beyond asking a question, and actively reject the mainstream explanations. We are interested in what you have to say, but only if you can support it with more than "those are my beliefs".
  8. ! Moderator Note Moved to Science News. joshwallerr, calling attention to science stories in the news is what our Science News section is for, but ultimately this is a science DISCUSSION forum. If your goal is only to promote your website, you're in violation of our rules. We want to have a conversation about your topics, with you involved in it, otherwise you're just selling something. Thanks for understanding.
  9. Discrimination or prejudice against a group BASED ON RACE happens to groups by definition. You don't get to reinvent new definitions just to make your arguments look better. This is part of what makes it difficult to discuss the subject with you. This is pretty ironic. Accuse someone of strawmanning, then turn right around and do the same thing. Yuk. Sorry I got dragged back in on this, but your discussion style guarantees a LOT of wasted time.
  10. Is this an objection? On what basis?
  11. Are you aware that dark matter is named that way mostly because it doesn't absorb, emit, or reflect electromagnetic radiation? It doesn't just mean "unknown".
  12. This has been getting more and more offensive, imo. Is this approach right to discuss suicide prevention, just throwing "this-seems-reasonable-to-me" observations against the wall to see if someone agrees? This is a very sensitive topic, and I want more rigor, FWIW.
  13. ! Moderator Note You need to post excerpts of your idea here. Nobody wants to leave the site or open documents they don't trust. Please support your ideas with evidence and sound reasoning. Try to avoid pitching this as "the real nature of reality". Science observes nature; "reality" is more of a philosophical concept. I'll let this stay in a mainstream section as long as you can use mainstream explanations, otherwise this will need to be moved to Speculations.
  14. ! Moderator Note Are we done with the topic of Arachnophobia? We prefer to keep discussions focused, and this thread appears to be broadening its scope.
  15. ! Moderator Note Our rules state that folks must be able to participate in a discussion without leaving this site. Can you please post excerpts here that support your claims? Thanks for understanding.
  16. ! Moderator Note This is NOT a tutorial, it's a science discussion, on a science discussion forum.
  17. ! Moderator Note None of your posts focusing on science have been voted down. It seems to be the ones where you mention a creator in the Evolution section, or complain about other posters, or about getting reputation points. No wars against you.
  18. Some plastic containers are meant to be disposable or recyclable, so they need sunlight to help break them down in a process called photodegradation. Is this damage or part of a process? Sunlight forces plants to destroy water and carbon dioxide. Is this damage or part of the photosynthesis process?
  19. You'd need to define "damage" better. Is it damaging to have sunlight break down organic material so it can be recycled in the environment? Everything? Hardly. Water is a primary cause of some types of "damage".
  20. I disagree. Compensation is the surgery AND the physical therapy to help heal the patient to hospital standards. Just changing the laws is the plaster, but both are necessary.
  21. We're a science discussion forum. Hiding information through private messages isn't our style. Can you just ask some questions regarding DNA that you're unsure of, rather than posting the actual text?
  22. ! Moderator Note Book Talk is more about discussing books we've read. This falls under a Biology category, so I'm moving this there for now. Do you have an excerpt to share regarding your take on DNA, or are you asking folks to read the whole book?
  23. ! Moderator Note Moved from The Sandbox (which is for testing LaTex) to The Lounge. I don't think evolution has a goal, but I've often thought humans were special because we came up with a way to leave the planet if necessary. Not sure we're going to find a safer world, or a more long-lasting one (how many billions of years do you need?), but I think we're the only species that could take other species with us when colonizing.
  24. This is such a ridiculous premise that I no longer feel you're arguing in good faith. It's pretty easy to look up black groups that are petitioning for reparations for redlining practices, so I feel that you're just making me post more links you won't read. But this is MigL's thread about a specific instance, and I've helped blow it up into a full discussion about racism. If someone would like to discuss the subject in good faith, I'll happily join that discussion, but this one has suddenly become about something else. Enjoy.
  25. In the US, we have a history of demanding segregation, but when black communities began to prosper, they were burned or flooded out. Part of NYC's Central Park used to be the thriving black community of Seneca Village until they were run off by NYC police. I knew you wouldn't read the links. Here are some excerpts: Please read this. It's in English, and it's not very long.
