When a car is driving from left to right in the direction of force(right) using kinetic energy, what energy does the K.E. transfer to? I was thinking that it would be potential energy, but since energy is the capacity to do work, the such energy cannot do work due to likely the gavity, therefore it is just the displacement anyway.............. Any help?

Hi there, This is my first post in these forums so I'm not sure if this is in the right forum. Anyway I currently have this "object" and I want to transfer heat from this object to another. Now what I want to know is what is the best conductor of heat, I'm considering Copper, so can you guys tell me any others! Help would be greatly appreciated

We know that Work = Force*Distance, and Power = Work/Time If Potential Energy of a book is 50 J....And the mass of the book is 1 kg....and the distance is 5m..... How do i calculate the power of the book? in watts? What i do is to transform the the P.E. to K.E., hence the kinatic force is also 50 J.......... In this case, what i want to know is the time....... and the formula for calculating the K.E. is W = 1/2mv^2 so, 50 = 1/2(1)(v^2), 100 = v^2, and v = 10 Since i know the final velocity, and the average velocity would be 5m/s Since i know the distance, it is 5m, then d/v = t, therefore the time is 1s... Finally, 50J/1s = 50 watts....... Is my …

For a story that is. I'm writing a short story set on mars and I want a gravity generator that works inside the domed cities so I don't have to deal with low gravity conditions. I plan to have a scene or 2 outside the domes so I can use low gravity conditions but for the majority I want near earth gravity. Effectively want I want is magic that works only in the domes, I don't need anything super technical since I plan to gloss over it but I'd like something that's not totally implausible.

I dont know if this is in the right area but i will ask anyway!! if it surposed to be in another area can you tell me. I was wondering how come the clothes in a washing machine when going thou the spin drying stage go around on the outside part and not around the bit in the middle? i got asked it today in physics. thanx for you help

If you heat carbon granules or carbon dust will it give off a gas and how dangerous is this gas. Also if you breath in air that is contaminated with carbon dust for several hours over a period of months could this damage your lungs or create a respiratory disease. regards dave

I live on the top floor penthouse 13 stories high, we`re having SEVERE gales here!!! I can feel myself sway side to side! I`ve attatched a wire to the ceiling with a heavy 3 kilo microwave transformer on the other end just above the floor and a laser pointer on that, the beem hits a peice of Graph paper, the movement is 5mm either way! I`m kinda tempted to leave and sit in the car or something, this really doesn`t feel right, kinda sea sick(ish) (( I`ve never known it this bad! we had a 4.8 earthquake last year, but that was only about 2 seconds, this just seems to be carrying on forever [edit] someones just lost a window and their clothes are being blow…

Pretty sure this is the right forum for this. Say you have something cone-shaped. The large end of the cone has some sort of propeller in it that causes it to pull air into the cone. This also means that the air will be pushed out the back as new air is pulled into the cone. Now, let's just throw some figures out. Say the large opening is a circle with a 10-inch diameter. The propeller is producing 10 pounds of thrust. The small opening in the cone is a circle with a 1-inch diameter. Am I correct in assuming that the air coming out of the cone is at 100 pounds of thrust? Now, that makes it seem very easy to make a lot of power. Knowing what I do know, there mu…

First of all, what properties of a sound make for an optimal echo? And second, I just saw a show that claims a wolf echo does not make an echo: http://animalplanet.discoveryeurope.com/50outrageousanimalfact s/feature8.shtml I don't believe that at all since it makes no sense, but is there any merit to that claim (which is why I asked the first question)?

I actually have a question about electromagnetism, a field that unfortunately I know almost nothing about. I thought this place is probably the best forum to put it in, If I'm wrong, sorry, just... err... move it wherever it should be. I know that electromagnetism is an EXTREMELY powerful force - and I've heard that it's a force higher 1e39 times from the force of gravity. It's also, as I know, the force that stops my atoms from passing through other matterial objects, like the table or the floor. My question is this: When we have a very powerful Electromagnet - do we feel it's repelling force PHYSICALLY on our body? Or, on different words - how strong shoul…

It is commonly understood that mass produces the effects of gravity. Is it also the case that energy itself produces gravity? If this is the case, don't gravity fields have energy, and wouldn't these energy fields also produce gravity, and so on for infinity?

im just curious  does the moon affect satellites in geocyntric orbit or leo orbit around earth? or doesnt it? oh, and please elaborate, as i doubt a few simple sentances will break past the thick skull of mine well, thanks ERADOR

this is tried and tested and does work! it`ll just involve a few simple components, namely a resistor and a capacitor with mains ratings. other than old age, the main contributor to light bulb failure on an AC mains system is the fact that random voltage spikes occur and that it`s AC. if you make a simple circuit that puts a capacitor across your light bulb (acts as a buffer and energy reservior) and a resistor in line to feed the capacitor (lowers the power a little against spikes, but the power stored in the Capacitor compensates for any loss). that`s about it really, if works as a very low pass filter, leaving an almost pure current with a smooth sine ripple, …

Can somebody help me understand the various parameters of and their effect upon the power generated by an altenator. I would like to experiment with them, but have some idea of how various designs will produce electicity before I start building stuff. I am guessing the strength of the magnets, their distance to the coil and the length of the coils will affect the power of the current and that the number of coils/magnets, the distance between each coil/magenet and the rpm of the system will affect frequency and voltage of the current but iam unsure. what about the numer of turns in the coils and diameter of the coil wire and the core material of the coils? I …

I`m sure most are aware of the EM (Electro Magnetic) Spectrum. radio waves start where sound stops (roughly 30Khz). Radio waves depend on a magnetic feild fluctuation (as does all phenomenon in the EM spectrum). IF a fixed magnet where to be rotated or physicaly moved at a rate of 30Khz or greater, would it broadcast a carrier wave? Edit: to aviod confusion as to my question, I`ll try a restate; If a permanent magnet were to vibrate at 30Khz or above, would it emit R.F (radio frequency) ?

Fact= The fatal shot that killed Kennedy caused his head to go back and to the left. I cannot fathom how a shot from the back could do this. I know there are other factors but using Newtonian law alone common sence tells us that his head must move in the direction the projectile was going. A bullet travelling at 1300mph that hits someone in the head must be the over-riding factor in which direction the head will move. What do you all think? Surely something with such force must have the greatest effect in determining which direction the target will move?

I`m sure this will seem a simple question to some of you (I hope) I`ts just that Ive forgoten how it works a body weighing 1 Gram, how fast does it need to move to have the same effect as doudle it`s mass (2 grams) example, I rest a 2 gram bullet on a peice of paper, it won`t go through it, I fire it, and it`ll go through steel plates, as if it mass was increased to several hundreds of pounds but with the same surface area (volume). can anyone remind me of the formula/explaination again Please, it`s been Soooo long since I`ve had to use it!

Hi all, I'm not really sure I am supposed to put the question in this forum, but right now it seemed like the best idea, so appologies if i'm wrong. I need help with as much information available (including formulas and practicals) about the ways to predict the changes in an electro magnetic wave that passes through an object with a certain density. On the other side of things, I want to see if the output i get after throwing electromagnetic beams through all kinds of materials, can actually tell me what kind of material it passed through. Obviously I am talkin about static objects. The problem of Doppler will be solved later. I'd appreciate any informa…

Hello again. Anyway, yeah..i got round to building a catapult which works great. After doing testing with different arm lengths and masses etc, i found it surprising that the shorter the arm length, the further the object thrown lands. Whý is that? I thought that the longer the arm further the object lands. Well yeah..but I'm just guessing, but heavier objects land at shorter distances due to Newton's second law of F=m.a Anyway, any suggestions on the arm length bit?? THanks. (Yes I am posting this again cause no one answered my reply frm my previous post, but erm yeah..so I'm kinda stranded and lost) THanks

there is an air-sealed elevator with a helium baloon inside held in the middle of the elevator. The elevator wire is cut, and the elevator stats to free-fall down. Once he wire is cut and the elevator stated to fall, the helium baloon is released. While the Elevator is falling the baloon will: a.) Float to the top of the elevator b.) Stay in the middle where it was released. c.) Float to the bottom of the elevator Factors: The elevator is filled with air, of which the pressure is equal to the atmospheric pressure outside (regular). Baloon is a regular rubber baloon filled with helium (like at birthday parties). I don't know the answer myself, i was w…
