Hello everyone, I'm new here and would appreciate some help. I came across science forums on Google, and it looked like a place that could help me. I'm in a dilemma. Right now, I am 56 years old and my kids are out of the house. Finally some freedom! To get to the point, I was interested in doing a little work with oxy-hydrogen gas. I understand how it all works. Electrolysis of water yields oxygen and hydrogen, the hydrogen is oxidized by the oxygen producing heat. I also understand that it is not very efficient, but it still interests me. Here's the problem I need to build a power source for this, and frankly, I don't know where to start. I guess …

  2. This survey is in response to another thread which has discussed the banning of pit bulls in many areas. The argument has been made that, since pit bulls harm more people than do other breeds that they are inherently dangerous and should be banned. Others have discussed the importance of conditioning, and how only dogs which have been raised improperly or with malicious intent will cause harm to humans, suggesting this behavior is not breed specific. This poll seeks to identify two things. First, how many distinct pit bull dogs you have encountered in your life time. Second, how many times you have been attacked by different pit bulls. If yo…

Hey everyone, we have a video project on oil for Geology class and we need your help! All we ask is for you to simply make a video response on you tube answering the 3 questions featured in our video regarding oil. Please post your response by March 2nd, 2008 6:00pm PST. Here is a link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRvFQCZGkfY If you have anything else to say about this subject, speak up! We'd love to hear your opinions and don't worry, we won't count this against you. We are open to whatever you think and say. We will gladly appreciate any sort of response, but we preferably want a video one. If you are unable to post a video response, dont fr…

  6. Hi, Ime mike a mad inventor who is currently constructing a gun of my own design capable of firing a high speed vortex of high vacuum plasma for use in space to disable grounded missiles its also capable of being fired at ground level and of haveing no re-coil due to vacuum ejection of a stable high rotational vortex formed in the barrel and exelerated by reduction...Its fired by first evacuating a chamber of air sealed by a birst disc then chargeing a bank of capacitors which are fired into two coils front-A and back-B of a (triggatron-open air spark gap made out of x4 platinum electrodes..) as plasma forms it is impacted by two electromagnetic fields proventing expansi…

Me and one of my friend had done some experiments related to pyrochemistry sometimes ago. They were aimed at Rocket flights. Later it was told to us that we cannot construct a rocket model as it is illegal. Now we had a fair amount of Black Powder which we would have been unable to use for rocketery. What we did was that we used small cars as a model. Attached a steel container containing the black powder. A resistor (for triggering the powder by passing very high current through it), 9V battery, and 555 timer circuit for 3 seconds delay before launch. The container and the car body was separated by using some insulations between them and airgap as well. Then …

  8. Long story short…my brother in law and I have been exchanging a “Don’t Tread On Me” flag a la the Collette/Kunkel urban ledged (http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/pants.asp). It started in 2001 when my brother in law found out I was giving him a gag gift (a Braille Playboy) so he decided to give me the above mentioned flag wrapped in about two rolls of duct tape and then welded into a pipe. I returned it the next year in a small safe, glued and screwed shut. Since then we set up a few rules. The weight and cost of material can’t increase more than 25 pounds and 25 dollars per year. You can’t damage the flag wrapping or unwrapping it. Finally, you can’t hide the flag…

Hallo Alle, I'm posting from Deutschland here, on a foreign exchange. Naturally, I ride the bike a whole lot more here than back in the States, and that includes night riding. My bike has lights and a commercial dynamo for them, but the dynamo's broken and I have time so I figure I'd like to try to rig something up myself. I'm pretty good at making circuits and switches (which can be triggered in a near infinite amount of ways), but that's about it; consider me a fresh recruit on the electrical bandwagon (as in, transistors, resistors, capacitors, etc. are just fancy names to me). So, I suppose one of my first questions is where to get a nice base knowledge of the vo…

Hi, I have a pet turtle and have heard that salmonella comes with turtles. For a science fair project I'd like to quantify the amount of salmonella (if any) in the turtle's water. Anyone have any thoughts on methods I could use to test the water?

  12. Started by Oldone,

Well, I have learned that I am trying to make a overly simplified venturi vacuum pump. The problem is--can you create enough air pressure by using the ram air going down the road? The second question--can it be made simple enough? Today is Sunday so my beginning will be Monday. I have really enjoyed the Solar cookers- my second project. I have already begun installing a grid solar system. The first thing I bought was my converter ( capable of grid or independent) hoping to disconnect from the grid eventually. Every 6 months I buy a pair of new panels.

I found directions for making a small railgun online and I'm just wondering if this is something a teenager with no experience with making this kind of thing could make and not get hurt. It's pretty cheap and the directions say it's relativly easy to make.

Anybody have some tips on how to create this? I've been thinking about creating one from a pile of junk for some time, and I even have some calculations done already. The main issue is getting actual materials for it. I've been thinking about using a bundle of copper wire for the rails, but then there are issues such as efficiency and then getting enough current to go through them. Does anyone have any suggestions or tips?

What I'm doing is having the lion get up and curl its mane (surgical tubing) around my high school's opposing football team. To do this I'm using pneumatic acuators and elecric actuators, but the problem is, I can't get the hair to stay up because the compressed air runs out before the float stops moving so I need some kind of quick drying glue or cement that will harden when cool to keep the tubes up. I'm also thinking of making it's mouth open and shooting purple and gold (menchville's colors) paint out w/ a small explosive charge behind it. edit: <font size="50" color="blue">PLEASE HELP MEEEEE!!!!!!</font>

I haven't really built one but i need help making one, i am posting different threads in different categories hoping that someone might help me if they see the thread... I have been given an assignment in regard to constructing a volcano model for my earth and space science class. I have browsed through your site, I must say it is helpful, but I can't find a volcano that would be for a high school student; I was wondering if you have any information about how to make a volcano for my class, I am in grade 12. What I am looking for is some way to control the model volcano, like before it erupts it shakes (if it has to take chemicals to do this it is fine), volcanic ash …

Hi guys, I found this awesome project on making a laser listening device out of a laser pointer. This can be useful for teaching physics of light/sound so I thought some of you would be interested. It's cool, check it out: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/767822/laser_espionage_microphone_how_to/ There's a full writeup on the project here: http://funditor.110mb.com/LaserListener.html

I was wondering if it is possible to mix fabric and color changing ink (like the ink that is put on micorwaveble syrup labels to tell when it is hot). Then put a heat conducting copper wire in the core middle of the color changing fabric. The effect will therefore be that when the copper wire is heated through electric conductivity the ink on the fabric will change from white (standard color) to what ever color is giving to the ink to change into, thereby making the entire fabric string to change to that color. Now if you do this process to all the colors in the color spectrum then you could entwine all of the different color changing fabric strings into one string tha…

I was recently confronted with the challenge of making a "mousetrap car." The rules were simple, make a functional car using a few slabs of balsa wood some copper bars used as axles and CD's as wheels (and of course a mousetrap.) My group used a fairly simple design, simply cut out 3 pieces of balsa, two were long rectangles, about 2 inches by 10 inches. these were put on the sides of the car and glued to a 4 inch by 8 inch piece of balsa (which was put on top of the car, so it had a top and two sides, the top did not fully reach the length of the sides, we then had the idea of using only three wheels, we assumed that in the front if there was only one wheel, the weight o…
