Hello everyone. I have just bought a small 12 volt electromagnet which i want to use to 'pull' an object suspended in liquid towards it to give the impression that the object is alive. I was just wondering what would be the best material to ebed inside the object(which will be made of silicon). The fist material which comes to mind is iron but im aware that there are other materials which are affected by a magnetic field. Is iron the most responsive to a magnetic field and so be the material to choose? I dont want anything too heavy either as this would impair the buoyancy and slow down the kind movement which i am looking for. Thanks very much for any possible replies…

Hey guys and i have a project in school due next month requiring me to make an insulation box relating to the topic ' Heat ' i need to make use of the transfer processes (conduction, convection and radiation) to make an insulation box so that if you put a hot thing inside, it wont cool off so quickly, the dimensions are 20cmx20cmx20cm and plz tell me what material i should use for it plz! thx ~Physiqs

Since high school (about 25 years ago) I have always wanted to make a CRT from a Vacuum Filtration Flask. After viewing Nyle Steiners project, I was inspired to give it a try. Below is a photo of the project and the link is to my youtube video of the same project. Over the next several weeks, I plan on making a new electron gun with a more focused beam. Furthermore, the copper anode in the one pictured has caused a messy sputtering issue. Aluminum or stainless will be employed in the newer version. Once done, the new video will have both deflection coils activated with a signal generator. Mark

for a science fair project I was wondering if there is a better (more violent) solution for a kids volcano. It still has to be safe of course but we want it to shoot up instead of just foam over top.

Hello guys, I am wondering if it is still best to collaborate with people from other fields, or is it best to work on your own? Any ideas???

Greetings! So Im making a coilgun for my science project at school, ofcourse my physics teacher thinks im insane. I would like to build a 4 stage coilgun with 20 capacitors in total. We were already sucesfull in assembling a single stage coilgun that used a ''ready'' circuit board from a disposable camera that already had a 330v 120uf capacitor attached to It. For the final version im planing to use 20x capacitors wich are either the same or with the same voltage and higher capacity. my questions are: 1)How do i mount the stages togeather? Because I couldnt find any ''real'' explination anywhere on the web. I know that it requiers a sensor of some sort or calculati…

Hi! Together with friends I started a robot battle contest in which we use LEGO RC robots to battle inside a destructible city We want to make a big show out of it and record it as video ^^ The robots have high power motors and we control them with a 2.4ghz system. So we can use more tanks and robots the same time in missions and races etc. And everything already work. But we also plan autonomous working rescue drones and robots, flying LEGO copters and much more. For building the drones we going to use LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3, and even give building sets away to students and interested builders depending to the kickstarted budget reached. We already have a pro…

Hello, I just had my old car (Nissan Pulsar N15) running out of registration and rather than just sending it to the wreckers, I'm wrecking it myself to give some parts a second life (fixing it to make it roadworthy again would be too expensive.) I was thinking about turning the engine and gearbox into a self propelled hydraulic power pack - compressor - generator (I already have a fair bit of parts coming from tractors and others; pumps, belts, generators, rams, ...) I first thought about welding the diff locked, in the gearbox, connect one drive shaft to a rear axle and the other drive shaft to the generator (inverter technology) and the hydraulic pump on the power…

Hi, i'm new in the forum, just singed in.I was thinking of doing a nice science project next year, which i will be on the first year of High School. My main goal with this project is to exceed the limit of 14 km of altitude. I'm not an expert in this subject but i have time to learn. Below will be the questions i have: Dimensions, what would be more efficient? Fuel, what should i use? Basics physic(and chemistry) subjects i should know before starting. Expanses, is it too expansive (not a big problem but i have to know if i'm going to spend $500 or $5000)? Launch site, where would be a good place to launch it (a desert or something?)? I'm really a beginner so an…

I have to make a working model to demonstrate Roget's Spiral experiment. The apparatus originally used included mercury. But since it applies to all electrolytes ,I would just pour common salt in water and use it. Would it produce spark or not?

Hello, I have found me a new useless project: making heavy water. Q:Why? A:I dont know. Q:What are you going to do with it? A:Posess it, or I will get the D of it. Well, I have some questions about it, are there other ways than Electrolysis of Water? They told me: try distillation, but isn't it cheaper just to let water vapourise and safe the last bits of water and vapourise that again and again and again? I don't mean to heat the wather, just let it stand there till there is only 1/10 left. will it work?

Recently I've been making some search on internet about fuel cells(I was expecting being able to make one) But I found something even more interesting(from my view point) that are the microbial fuel cells(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microbial_fuel_cell). and I'm about 3 or 4 days searching some informations about it, even thinking in making my own(once I saw many tutorials about) but questions appeared in my mind and I can't find the answer. I hope you guys help me out. first is about the electrodes, there is no much about them I have no idea what kind material to use. second is "am I making a fuel cell or a battery? since according with some of my sources some …

I've been looking into cheap alternatives for clear casting resin, and came across a simple, kid's recipe for modeling clay that involves equal parts Elmer's Glue-All, cornstarch and flour. What I'm wondering is - does this stuff dry translucent? I would like to either cast a 'brick' or 'shell' (depending on how thin it has to be to be translucent, if that applies) that will diffuse the light from 7-8 LED's to make an even color (the LED's are evenly spaced). In addition, if I do have to cast a three-dimensional shape out of this, would it be possible to coat the sides with petroleum jelly for a 'mold release'? As far as I know, it should work - an often-used trick for g…

Dear forum community, I am a student at the University of Economics and Business in Vienna, Austria. We are currently working on a project and our task is to find new application fields for an existing heat treatment technology. As part of the project, we are supposed to conduct field research and collect as many potential areas and ideas as possible. We would be very thankful for any kind of contribution! The main feature of the heat treatment technology is that it enables to change a material’s properties and structure. In principle, the treatment of any kind of material is conceivable and it is also possible to apply the technology to toxic/hazardous materials …

I'd like to make a coffee cup that has a high heat inertia. So you'd warm it up for a while on the stove top and then itll be giving back slowly into your coffee for the next 30 minutes or so. Any ideas on materials that are easily attainable? Need to be non toxic.

So you know, I'm very serious about this project, but what's holding me back is lack of expert help. I have a very specific series of ideas as to how I think it will work, but I'm trying to pick the brains of other, more-informed people than myself. Please don't criticize me for not knowing high math, or the physics of heated fluid, rocketry, etc., because I'm well-aware, and seeking due compensation. Go ahead and laugh about my hubris if you like, but if you're unwilling to help me try to make my vision work, revise, please don't waste my time; I think I've found a way to harness the power of the cyclone, and if there be some relevantly-knowledged folks around, I'd like…

I have an Arduino UNO R3...... I actually wants to interface it with a 6DOF IMU so that I can get visual data on my computer from it........ I am a novice on programming the Microcontroller so plzz provide me source codes and useful links for the same! Also recommend me a good IMU too! >>A code I found on the internet:- #define Gyro_Sens 0.00333 // Gyro sensitivity = 3.33mV/deg/s #define VPQ 0.00322581 // Volts Per Quid --- value of 3.3V/1023 #define ADC_Avg_Num 100.// Number of averaging readings for calibration #define Rad2Deg 57.2957795 // 1 radian = 57.2957795 degrees #define Deg2Rad 0.0174532925 // 0.0174532925 rads = 1 deg //The minimum and maximum valu…
