Experiments

Fun science experiments you've done that you'd like to share with the world.

So, I'm looking for fun home experiments in thermo. I found this video: I'm going to test it out soon (need to buy a proper candle, I only have the small round scented ones). BUT Before I can put this in a proper official "DIY" kit, I need to know what's going on. I *think* I know, but I need some help with this. Is this due to a convection cycle or something else? If so, I'm having a bit of difficulty understanding how BOTH sides are lit (which also means they warm up the air above them, respectfully) and yet it rotates, one side goes up while they other goes down. What's going on here? Is the heat engine more towards the "center" (as in, the center …

Okay, this should've been very simple: Two cups with the same amount of hot water at the same temperature (75 Celsius). Add about 5 tablespoons of salt to one of those cups and stir until the salt is dissolved. Measure temperature of both cups. Wait 20 minutes, measure again. The salt-water SHOULD cool faster. I'm staring at those two cups at the moment, and they're both the same. Not only that, but this experiment says that the first two runs they did -- the temp dropped the same, and was different only at the third trial. WTF. Why does this not work? Salt should decrease the thermal retention rate of the water ... sooooo.... what's going on? …

Hi Dears, I intend to build a model of seawater greenhouse with least 500 m2 in my country, IRAN. Iran possesses a vast area next to the gulf and beach justifying using this technology due to be placed in a site with water shortage. Nevertheless there are some problems and criticisms challenging using this technology in my country or maybe other countries. Really, discussing about my country's conditions for utilizing this technology can be a common case for many countries that is one of my interests& motives for entering this topic. But my main interest is getting an executive procedure for building of this greenhouse. So everybody thinks that can guide and help …

  4. For my previous science fair, I performed an experiment testing the plausibility of the iron-sulfur world theory. I added ammonia, acetic acid, water, and salt to one container, and heated CaCO3 and zinc in another to create carbon monoxide, which flowed into the first container. The result was lipids and a drop in pH, but I can't seem to get down the cause of this pH drop. Can someone help me? 5. Hello, ok for a physics project i have to design a launcher that gets all power from a 1 farad capictator at 13.8 volts. i want to know if the capictatior can split a ml of water into oxygen and hydrogen gas and the ignite the whole messs again? any help would be much appreciated. ok i did the energy conversion for the capictator and i get 95.22 joules and if the system was 100% efficent then it would take 121 joules to split a ml so atr most i could split .5 ml of water but would the explosion be enough to propell a .25 inch by .5 inch rod?

OK i have been given the task of building a launcher with a 1 farad capacitor the launcher will launch a .25 inch by .5 inch steel rod. now i wonder if i made a barrel and in the ignition chamber of the launcher i filled it with a couple of ml of pure H and ran the electrodes into the water all in this sealed chamber. would the capacitor have enough power to split the water and then ignite it to launch the rod? or would i be better off with using the electrodes connected to just make heat to boil the water and launch the rod any input would be much appreciated thank you in advance for your help.

I discovered this today. Hold two fingers out in front of you at half arms length, point them at each other and touch your two finger tips together, push them towards from each other slightly so that they are overlapping by 1/2 a fingers length and pull one up and one down slightly so there is a gap of about 2 finger thickness between your two parallel fingers. Now move your fingers round and round each other, first one way then the other, try slow\fast. Now pull your left hand to the left and your right hand to the right a fingers length. Try the same thing again, now for the trick. Try and move your fingers in opposite circles. For example, left finger c…

This is one of these don't try this at home experiments but if your in a lab try pouring a test tube full of water over oil thats on fire. Its well fun. If you've never seen it you get a massive fireball due to the rapid exspansion of air inside the oil. Good times.

Hi all! I've been trying to figure out a way to build a very simple capacitor bank that could absorb power and maintain it for a short period of time. Since I'm not that power savvy so I'm only trying it with a a 9V battery...at first Any suggestions on how I should go about starting this daunting task? Much appreciated!

I hope someone can help, I've just conducted my pilot study for an experiment testing the effectiveness of hand sanitisers on killing the bacteria e.coli. From the pilot study I've realised that I will need to have the exact same amount of each solution on the sterile paper disc that I place onto the agar plate. Obviously some hand sanitisers are gels so its not easy to get them to fully absorb into the paper disc. Does anybody have any advice on how i could ensure that I have roughly the same volume of solution on each paper disc? Thanks in advance!!

I'm doing an environmental science project. I've located a tobacco barn, and I'm taking air, water, and soil samples around the barns and away from them to see the difference in composition. I have pretty solid tests for the water and soil samples, and I've laid out particulate strips for the air, but I would like to do a qualitative analysis of some air samples. Do you have any ideas for relatively cheap (<$100) qualitative tests for air samples? Thanks!

Urey-Miller Experiment The URL below has a diagram that displays the Urey-Miller experiment. This experiment's purpose was to simulate pre-biotic soup and the generation of early life. The experiment used water (H20), methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), and hydrogen (H2). Looking at the diagram will explain this a lot better. Miller and Urey believed the experiment was successful. I have my doubts. Just producing 11 out of 20 amino acids is not close to a cell. Wikipedia will have much more information if you would like to know more about the original experiment. http://en.wikipedia....Urey_experiment Modernizing the Experiment I am wishing to perform a …

Hey guys! I'm new to this forum. The reason why I joined was to find some fun experiments. Also because this is my first year of high school and I'm taking honors bio, so I thought if I need help you guys can help me too. So What are some fun experiments? I would like something that would take a while. Like vinegar and baking soda is short. Something like growing plants to test something, like that takes a while. I need a new hobby because my old one was playing with fireworks (and making them with chemistry haha. I decided I don't want to loose my eyes before 15. So thanks so much! I hope to have some great experiences and help on here from people that love scien…

ok so im doing science fair at my school and i'm going to start conductiong my experiment but im sort of undecided. You see, what i want to do is go into either a my classrooms and conduct my experiment or go to a public place and do it. What i'm going to be doing is on behavioral science and its about how people react. i'm not sure how to word that, sorry. Like im going in, not going to talk to anyone and bring a bag of stuff and dump the bag on the table and put the stuff back inside and repeat this like ten times. While im doing this im going to have one of my friends record what it is that people are doing around me, like whether or not theyre staring at me, whisperin…

Hello all! So here's the deal... I don't have much biology experience (a couple first year university courses, and of course highschool, but I am starting a biotech program in college in the fall), but I am extremely interested in starting some do it yourself (myself?) biology experiments. I subscribed to the DIYbio emailing list, but I have to admit that it seems like an overwhelming amount of info being thrown at me, and I don't know where I could begin. ** I was wondering if any of you lovely ladies and gents had any great links to experiments or experiment ideas to do with manipulating and growing cells, and maybe some nice lists of equipment I would ne…

ok... not exactly a "stick" its more of a vial... but it demonstrates chemiluminescence. Recipie is quite straightforward: Start with Diethyl Phthalate, add bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl) oxalate "TCPO", stir in some hydrogen peroxide, a bit of sodium acetate to improve the effect of the peroxide and a dash of bis(phenyethynyl)anthracene for color. First picture is the vial with the flash on, the second picture is the vial with the flash off. Its hard to see, but those "rocks" in the bottom are actually pure crystals of TCPO. if you look closely, you can tell its not the crystals that are growing, but the surface as the crystals dissolve and react with the peroxide. I…

I guys,im new here,im just here to ask one thing, can H2SO3 solution be oxidized by O2 from water electrolysis(or other form of making oxygen),to create H2SO4? I know it works with ozone, but im not sure of using O2.Well i like to discuss chemistry(but i dont like to mess with chemicals because i dont have the proper materials,or a secure place to make it). If nobody have done that before, can somebody, with the appropriate equipment and security try it? Please if some of you try let me know if it worked.

  23. The Classic Goldfish Memory Experiment, with a Twist I have a final paper on goldfish memory, but to keep things interesting, I'll be testing not just if the common goldfish has a long term memory, what I'll be testing is... Can Goldfish Remember Sequences? The classic goldfish memory test is basically teaching them to navigate a simple maze, with a colored hole to mark the openings, and food as reward. If their time in navigating improves, it means they do have memory. But, with this twist, I want your opinion on if it'll work or not (I know experiments don't have to go the way you think It'll go all the time, but I'm not wasting several dollars worth of …

A few months ago, I was walking on a railroad and encountered a dead rodent (maybe a ferret, a badger, a raccoon...) on the tracks. Yesterday I went there again and noticed the corpse was still there. The whole flesh was completely decomposed, all that was left was a clean, white, intact skeleton with some little dry hair and skin on the sides. It was a pretty neat sight. In fact, it was so nice and in perfect condition, that I thought I'd like to take the skull back home. I even turned it over to see that there wasn't a trace of brain tissue left. I'll wait to have some gloves and a plastic bag, of course. Still, I know it's probably full of microbes and not…

hi for my science experiment i wanna test which part of the mouth has the most bacteria. To test this i will swab 4 people's mouths in three locations (cheek, tongue, teeth) at different times of the day (morning evening, night) I will then grow the bacteria and measure the growth of each before averaging it. I was wondering if the growth is enough to determine the area with the most bacteria? all other suggestions/changes will be appreciated! thanks
