http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otm7x3rpToQ Contains: -Boric acid + ethanol antifreeze burned, a fairly nice green flame but I've seen it done better on some videos. Any suggestions? -An awesome line by the demoman class from Team Fortress 2. -Lots of commercial fireworks (that really suck in Finland btw) dumped in an old milk container thing. Not very scientific but quite awesome. -Varying amounts of flash powder in various containers. -A 3kg Fe2O3/Al thermite in a zinc bucket that I couldn't capture in it's entirety since it ignited when the camera was off. -MacGyver.

Sup guys. I'm a newbie here. I am running a sordaria lab for my AP bio class. What I am basically doing is testing different environmental stress factors on the sordaria to see if it will increase the crossover rate. However, I recently subcultured one plate and noticed the Sordaria aren't spreading out. I have a feeling that the plate has been contaminated, but I am not sure. Any tips on how to make a more successful transfer and keep grow the sordaria?

it`s something I`v been working on now for over a year, learning all I needed to and obtaining what I needed to, and Finally TODAY! I have my 1`st Positive result! check this out! : I`m using plain B&W photo paper, and made my own solns to develop and fix them. I`m using Radium 226 in a small glass vial, and you can even see the x-ray shape it`s made as a result. the Thorium 232 is plain metal, and evidently less "Hot" in way of Gamma, but does show a very neat outline of it`s shape on the paper. the total exposure time was exactly 1 week to within the hour. Enjoy

Hi all, I have a website with a couple of goofy experiments... an easy way to send an audio signal over a laser pointer beam, and also a barometer made from a condom and a cocktail glass. A couple of days ago, I posted a video of a French gentleman hand building his own radio vacuum tubes. Very interesting. thx! http://www.monaslab.com

I`v just made the Strangest observation during an experiment I`m conducting that Has nothing to do with what I`v seen. Look at the very Tips of the plants in these pics: now I can Assure everyone that these have Never been outside, it doesn`t rain in the lab and the Relative Humidity is that of any other ordinary indoor room ~40-60% and the temp hasn`t been below 18c. these plants are Wheat in one beaker and Barley in the other. can Anyone explain these liquid droplets on the tips of the blades?

Im pretty sure this would work. You need a metal container "A old car battery or something thats resistant to sulfuric acid". A metal cover "make sure it fits the container" ,you will need to file some pennies until all the zinc is exposed, copper wire, and a drill. Drill a hole in the penny and thread the copper wire do this twice to make the anode and cathode. Fill the container with the sulfuric acid "be careful". Then drill a hole in the metal cover and thread the copper wire so that the penny and some of the wire is in the solution while some of the wire is sticking out. Put the metal cover on and your done.

I`m trying to learn some more about Organic chem, and have done several Halogenations of different alkanes. I thought I`de try an Alcohol instead, so I bubbles Cl2 gas through ethanol to make Chloral, and then Chloral Hydrate: 2,2,2-trichloroethane-1,1-diol it has a rather pleasant smell in small amounts, and a bit Sickly sweet in stronger concentrations. then I decided to Hydrolise this with NaOH, the 1`st part takes away the HCl in the 2,2,2-trichloroethane-1,1-diol mix, and the Excess NaOH should start to rip the Chlorines off the 1 carbon. now I have no idea what the product IS that I have, but there is a salt layer at the bottom of a rusty colored clear…

Hi, I was looking at experiment and I was wondering if somebody here could help clarify my understanding of it. I plan on presenting it to my class. It has to do with a pendulum and light filter for one eye (sunglasses). What you do is get friend to swing pendulum (side to side) about 2 meters away. Cover one eye with the filter and look at the swinging, instead of going side-to-side, it should be turning in an elipse. If you switch filters side over to the other eye, the pendulum elipse is swinging in the other direction. How come? I know it has to do with delayed reception of one eye (one w/ filter)vs other eye and then brain connecting the two …

Recently I prepared soms CaC2 by using an arc welder, marble and charcoal. See http://arcmelt.velp.info . It worked well, adding the product to water bubbled and acetylene gas escaped, burning with a sooting flame. Does somebody else have experiences with this ?

1kg of Fe2O3:Al thermite, in an approximately 75:25 ratio in a steel pan, done on 31st of December. In this case, accompanied by a cheerful song known as DragonForce - Through the Fire and Flames. Btw has anyone tried mixing barium nitrate with thermite to make "thermate"? I might try it if I ever get my hands on some Ba(NO3)2.

I`ve just discovered something Very strange. I`de set up my Hoffman Voltameter a while back, and after filling both sides H2 and O2 respectively, I put it to one side and thought no more of it. but Slowly the levels were starting to drop unil it had swung towards Negative pressure!? a Vacuum of sorts. I suspected that it was acting as a type of barometer, but I thought I`de check the carbon electrodes for Voltage anyway (I have no idea what made me think of that), and sure enough there was Voltage present:eek: 2 identical electrodes in dilute Sulfuric acid with O2 in one column and H2 in the other. so I refilled them to Positive pressure again and I`m gettin…

This is a funny experiment, I want to share here. This is not because of beautiful colors, but of a very pleasant smell. There is some aftereffect, which can be described as being numb, somewhat floating feeling. It has no adverse effects, if not done too often. First chloroform is made, through the so-called haloform reaction: Take some chlorine bleach and add acetone. Add 3 ml of acetone to 50 ml of 10% active chlorine bleach. Use the bleach without perfumes or other additives. This will make chloroform. This step may take some time. Just let the chloroform settle at the bottom, until a few blobs are obtained. Collect them with a pipette. No need to purify them, th…

Alright, I want to do a research project for this Junior Science and Humanities Symposium thing. It has to be original research, well conducted, etc. A lot of people just test other people's hypotheses which is probably a good idea, but being the over-achiever that I am I've decided to come up with my own research question. In short I've gone through about 5 crappy ideas that I couldn't do, and I finally think I've come up with something doable, and I'm just wondering if it's worth doing. I got a list of the all the vocalizations observed in a wild study population of Cercopithecus mits, the blue monkey, from an ethogram published on this site, which I thought was som…

designed 25 years ago when I was 15, I`ve FINALLY gotten around to building it and testing it! I have some pictures Here: http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/yt2095/scopefront.jpg http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/yt2095/scopeback.jpg now these next 2 pics aren`t very good but who cares http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/yt2095/scope1.jpg http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/yt2095/scope2.jpg I`m running a simple 1KHz (rough) sinewave into it (and I`ve got the amplitude cranked to show all the display), obviously up close you can see the individual LEDs but from a distance it`s Perfect! it`s also Moving too, the still pics show garbage really, as it does with a TV screen. it use…

The other day I was using a pair of those stereoscopc glasses that let you see two-dimensional images in three dimensions. I was just wondering what you would see if you could somehow use the glasses to look at an "actual" three-dimensional object with the same colour properties as the paper, wouldn't that theoretically allow you to see four dimensions?

Hello all. This is my first post here. I am currently taking a break on my Fusor endeavors and have now decided on some ball lightning experiments. I decided to reproduce the St. Petersburg water discharge experiment as depicted in the affixed URL address. So far, I have been unsuccessful. My capacitor bank is currently at 7.9 uf with a discharge voltage of approx 9kv. I ramped up the current to almost 16uf with no change. Just a louder report. (It should be noted that the capacitance range in prior successfull tests have been from .5 to 25uf) I have even gone through a full range of brine solutions thinking that may have played a part in this. No luck. Here is m…

I`ve just seen/done something that totaly defies any explaination I`m capable of! Cr2O3 (made from burned Ammonium dichromate and washed in plain water until clear). 1 heaped spatula of it in a test tube and then 3 ml of Ammonia soln (about 10%). there will be a slight color change but nothing drastic, then add the same amount again of H2O2 (9% 30vols). gas will be liberated and very slight warming will be noticed, it will also make little "underwater volcanos" for half hour or so, quite interesting to watch actualy. there will Also be a Blackish PPT in there amongst the green Cr2O3. now get a NIB magnet next to the test tube, all these black particle…

All of you know burning, and also even exploding of gas/air mixtures. Burning also is possible in chlorine gas. The following experiment does not require any exotic chemicals and can be carried out at home. http://woelen.scheikunde.net/science/chem/exps/cl2_c2h2/index.html If you do this experiment, please do not scale up, and make the chlorine gas outside or in a fume hood.
