Hi all, I’ve recently been watching a lot of Nile red’s videos on YouTube and it’s inspired me to synthesise something of my own. In short, if possible, I’d like to make some shoe soles out of old plastic or clothing or anything that can easily be broken down and re-polymerised into shoe soles really aha. I have a (very) vague idea of how the method could work, the problem is I can’t find anything specific on how to perform something like this on a small scale; I can only find information on the brief processes large recycling companies use. Does anyone know how I could go about doing this? Or of any websites that could help? Any replies would be gre…

i dont know how to do this 98 grams of potassium chloride are added to 217 grams of water. The volume of the water is 200 cm3. When the water reaches saturation, the undissolved salt is removed. If potassium chloride has a solubility of 95 g/dm3, what is the mass of the final solution?

  10. Let me preface this with a warning that I am no expert; I simply saw a graduate student's research and would like to see a discussion of this. He was working (At UT Knoxville if anyone is interested) on a way to make chlorophyll more efficient for use in solar panels. Basically, this causes a concentration gradient of H+ ions, starting off the ETC, just like High school biology teaches. However, the problem he was working with is the fact that Chlorophyll isn't very efficient. As anyone looking at a plant can see, Chlorophyll reflects much of the light in the "Green" spectrum (Roughly 560-520nm) and absorbs light fairly well in the red and blue wavelengths. (700-635nm, an…

Good morning! I'm a organic chemistry PhD student and I'm new member of this forum In the last months I had troubles with a reaction: it was a coupling between a primary amine and the Mercaptopropionic Acid. I obtained the producted that I want, but the yield were very bad (5-10%), and I really don't know why. Did you know if the free thiol terminal groups could give me some troubles? Could this be trapped in the MgSO4 that I use to dry the organic phase after the estraction? Because I really don't know where I can lose everything. I always work with cuopling reaction usind HATU, HOAt and Collidinen, but I never had a free thiol terminal group. Than…

  13. I apologize if a similar topic has been answered somewhere else in this forum. I could not find the answer after a quick search, here or on google. If it is the case that I ask a question that has been answered before, please point me in the right direction. I have a project where I consider electroplating a metal object with another metal lower in the reactivity series, but I am not completely sure I understand how it would work and which voltage would be required. E.g. plating a piece of copper wire with aluminium, using an electrolyte of an Aluminium salt of some kind in water solution. In the beginning this requires a voltage difference (which can be found from t…

Hello - this is my first post - I hope it is in the right forum. I am a textile artist and I want to use thickened bleach to screen print onto fabric (the fabric has been dyed with indigo and I want to selectively remove the colour to create a pattern). I have a small quantity of a product called Bleach thickener produced by the Jacquard company (for textile artists), and it works very well. The jar doesn't say what the chemical composition of the product is. I will run out of this soon, and it isn't available in Australia. I am looking for something else that will do the job. I have tried cornflour (I think Americans call it corn starch?) but no matter how thick I m…

Morning, Please forgive my English and unfamiliarity with some of the terms I need. Outside my field... We are trying our luck with crude oil extracts from plant material. Soak the dry plant material in a solvent (Ethanol/Acetone/ Ethylacetate Etc...) We have been working in lab scale using a rotary evaporator. Now I need to design and purchase a larger system for doing the same basic thing. Evaporating a solvent and collecting the oil. The goal is to evaporate 100L of solvent in about 8h of work. So... here is what I think we need (and a few questions): 1) 5L double jacketed reactor (Vacuum prof). 2) A heater/…

Hello all. I'm in a bit of a quandary with my tub of calcium oxide. I can only assume that at some point I have failed to seal the lid properly, or have dislodged it a bit when moving it. Whatever the cause, I discovered earlier today that the contents have swelled and lifted the lid to precarious new heights, and the resulting powdery tower looks worryingly delicate. I have two options at this stage. I can either order a new, larger sealable tub to house it - though since the purity has obviously been compromised it will have limited uses - or I can attempt to dispose of it. Should I wish to dispose of it, what would be your suggestions on the best way t…

Is there such thing as an exothermic heater in the market, perhaps based on quicklime or similar, for indoor emergency heating as in electrical power outage; instead of propane heaters ? Something safe to health, that when activated/started will heat up with no combustion gases. I have small chemical something warmers for the army, that with water added produce heat for a limited number of hours. Some are reactivable by heating in an oven, allowing reuse. Something in that line of products, instead of :

I'm planning a surprise for my wife and kids and am putting together a sort of treasure hunt to get them to the surprise. The hunt will consist of different puzzles that have to be solved in order. Solve puzzle 1 and you get to puzzle 2 and so on. One of my kids is a linguist do some of the puzzles might be some sort of cipher for example. One is a programmer and that seems easy to create a puzzle or two for. One of my daughters is a chemist - currently working on her master's degree. I have no idea how to create a chemistry related puzzle. The puzzle needs to be in the form of an image, or text but it won't have instructions. The answer needs to be one word or one set of…
