i was wondering if there was a way to seporate sodium chlorate i made from the leftover salt by the big melting point difference in the two substances:rolleyes: concidering that; 1) would the chlorate decompose 2) how would i filter the solid out 3) is there a way to stop the chlorate from decomposing Any idea ?????

Does anyone know how to concentrate hydrogen peroxide further? I know of these methods: 1. Freezing: requires qutie low temperature, anyone want to explain fractional freezing any further, especially if it would be a good way for H2O2 2. Simple Distillation: BAD IDEA, doesn't it automatically combust (or at least the vapors) 3. Sparging: More information needed, something about running air through the solution 4. Vacuum distillation: Quite good, but not easy to keep vacuum, anyone ever done this? (and wants to share their secret) if i were to further distill it, I would like to expiriment with rocket propulsion, but first, I must get a higher concentrati…

I've been making Calcium oxide in my mini furance in my backyard. well most of what I make is calcium oxide, due to bad rock. I was reading about calcium carbide. I've read that if you heat calcium carbonate/oxide with carbon it will make cacium carbide. But I'm not sure what temps this requires. Any ideas? Also what temps does it require to turn barium carbonate into barium peroxide? Its just I'm moving in a week and I dont think my mum would be happy with me making a furnace in dround in the yard. So I'm trying ot get these chems made while I still can. And is there a good way of purifying calcium oxide? As I've got bad rock, I dont mind magnesiu…

Hi, I need to know where or how I can purchase a very small quantity of KCN. Don't worry, I don't want to use it to kill anyone despite that being a very popular means on T.V. shows. As far as I've seen this is labeled as a "restricted chemical" with most firms who sell it (no suprise there, as it's toxic) and I don't want to jump through a bunch of hoops, and the smallest quantities that I could find being sold where $500+. I even tried looking on Ebay, but no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

I was surprised to read in Dmitri Mendeleev's 'The Relations between the Properties of Elements and Their Atomic Weights': '...every (periodic) system, however, that is based upon exactly observed numbers is to be preferred of course to other systems not based upon numbers because then only little margin is left to arbitrariness... Properties, such as the optical and even the electrical or magnetic ones, cannot serve as basis for the system naturally, since one and the same body, according to the state in which it happens to be at the moment, may show enormous differences in this regard.' Wait a minute, today's standard IUPAC Periodic Table does not follow that rule …

Please respond, do you think that this is possible.... oh and by the way, i'm not some freak that thinks explosions are cool or fire is fun to play with, but this is very interesting... 2Al (s) + 6HCl (aq) ..(yields).. 2AlCl3 (aq) + 3H2 (g) so you get aluminum chloride, (performed in an ice bath) right? then 2AlCl3 (aq) Electrolysis using iron cathodes and anodes 2AlCl3 (aq) …. 2 Al (s at cathode) + 3 Cl (g at anode) + 2H (g at cathode) + Fe2O3 (s at both of the poles) and then let the excess water evaporate things to consider 1) would this even work 2) would the ratios be correct 3) you would have to keep scrubbing the cathode and a…

Is there a way to make Potassium perchlorate from Potassium chlorate, or would it be easier to make it from mixing solutions of Sodium perchlorate and Potassium chloride? Also, the latter causes the formation not only of Potassium perchlorate but also Sodium chloride. How would I go about separating the two? Thanks, Ken

Jeez, this is really annoying... HOT ICE When sodium acetate trihydrate crystals (melting point 58 °C) are heated to around 100 °C, they melt. When this melt cools, it gives a supersaturated solution of sodium acetate in water. This solution is capable of supercooling at room temperature, well below its melting point, without forming crystals. A nucleation center may be formed which causes the solution to crystallize into solid sodium acetate trihydrate again. The bond-forming process of crystallization is exothermic, hence heat is emitted. It looks like when you touch it like a bunch of ice just spreads out from your touch. Anyway, I'm having serious prob…

Hello! I'm writing up the post-lab for a thermochem experiment, and I have to combine two net ionic equations to reach the third equation then add up the enthalpy changes. But I need a bit of help working out the equations: (a) NaOH + HCl > NaCl + H2O (b) NH4Cl +NaOH > NH3 + NaCl + H2O © NH3 + HCl > NH4Cl So I have to algebraically combine the first two equations to get to the third equation, but I'm not really sure how Thanks!

Hello guys , I'm sitting for the chemistry exam this year and I have started studying for it. The spectator ions have being bothering me a lot recently. In the books I'm doing they neglect them sometimes and write ionic equations and do all sorts of stuff with it. I know specatator ions aren't involved in the reaction but I get confused with them sometimes.I'll post some multiple choice problems here to make it clear where my difficulties lie. The answers are also provided. So all I really want is to understand how to get the answer. Problem 1 A standard solution of pottassium permenganate (KMn04) has a concentration of 0.0240 M. It is titrated against a solut…

Hey everyone, I have to figure out what prac I'm going to do as the big assessment for this year. The text books we use have many pracs, but the teacher says we must go further than what's asked from the textbook. So, flipping through the pages I see rates of reaction. I get an idea. What I want to do, is a prac which incorporates two main ideas: How concentration affects rate of reaction How temperature.. So, I would compare the two. (have many test tubes) But essentially: Have a test tube with high concentration and low temperature (lets say room temp). Have another test tube with the opposite: low concentration and high temperature. …

I am new here and I have following question: I read the rules when I registered and it is still not clear to me if it is allowed to mention websites while posting messages which deal only with scientific questions and have no stuff to sell, etc. I tried to contact the administrator, but did not receive a reply.

I have to determine the formula for an unknown sample of acid (only 1 gram is provided). The methods i've come up with to determine the type of acid are the following: 1. Melt a couple of crystals and cross-reference this value to known literature values (if anyone knows a source that provides these please post here) 2. Titrate it using a standardized solution of sodium hydroxide and determine its molar mass. Again, cross-reference this value to literature values. 3. Finally, use a pH probe and create a titration curve. This will give me an idea whether it is a weak/strong acid or whether it's monoprotic or polyprotic. If anyone knows other good analytical…

Does anyone know if the reaction of di- or trichloromethane with silver nitrate is possible as in CH2Cl2 + 2AgNO3 -> CH2(NO3)3 + 2 AgCl or CHCl3 + 3 AgNO3 -> CH(NO3)3 + 3 AgCl ? And does anyone also know about the same reaction with silver nitrite?
