I was using diluted drain opener, to open some clogged drains. Now, this drain opener, does not mention any ingredients on the bottle, and I also have tried looking online, it was some local brand, does not show up on Google. But, since, most drain opener have NaOH in them, I am guessing, it did too. Now, what really happened is, I spilled some on my hands, and without knowing it, touched various surfaces around the house, I only came to know, that I have spilled it on my hand, when I noticed some light pink color on my hand. The drain opener, was colored light pink. I rinsed my hand immediately, there is no chemical burn on my hand, But, I am worried, I might have sp…

hi I´m working on a personal project, surfing through the internet but I can´t get it done and would really appreciate any help. I´ve been trying to electroplate silver onto copper but I have failed because of the passivation on the silver (cathode). The best dissolution for this, I´ve found on the internet, is with AgCl (precipitate) and HNO3 (aq) as a result of mixing AgNO3 (four grams dissolved in 100 ml of soft water) and HCl (300 ml with a concentration of 28%), with the current of a 9 volt battery (the square ones). I´m quite certain that the nitric acid should stop the oxide layer on the silver but this isn´t happening. How can I stop the passivation? Should I…

Hi, Firstly hello everyone. I can't believe it's taken me so long to discover this site, I've been collecting elements for about 18 months and could have exchanged views with others ages ago. I was wondering how I might best clean up some of my samples that are starting to look a bit tired. Worst offenders are Y, Sm, Gd and Tb Metal. (Interestingly From Dy to Lu the samples have hardly deteriorated at all, and my La, Ce, Pr, Nd and Eu are under mineral oil). What substance would best remove the oxide that forms on these lanthanides? Thanks, SR.

Water solubility test Test water solubility of 2-FMA and 4-FA to see if findings are similar to those explained in other solubility tests. Will test different amounts of the specimens (2-FMA and 4-FA) weighed in milligrams and pre-seperated in gel-caps, due to lack of other housing, in different amounts of water and collect results. After results are collected and analyzed, solutions will be disposed of. I will be obtaining everything to do the experiment and doing it as described: To verify that a compound has dissolved, add 5% HCl to the NaOH mixture until the solution is acidic to pH paper. Look for a precipitate, indicating that the water-soluble salt has convert…

Hi, I have a somewhat stupid question. Can sodium fluoride (as used by dentosts) react with carbonic acid (carbonated water) to form hydrogen fluoride? If so how? Like when the dentist puts that fluoride compound on your teeth and then you go home and drink carbonated water. World that work.

Hello! I had an issue when I was planning to make KNO3 from salt substitue, unfortunatley where I live there is no Salt Substitute containing 99% KCl. I only found a salt with 70% KCl mixed with 30% NaCl! Is there still anyway where I can make KNO3 from the two salts or is there a way where I can separate the NaCl and the KCl from each other, so that I can make KNO3 with amost pure KCl?

Dear all, I am currently confronted to a problem involving mica and its potential reactivity with water / humidity. Let me first explain the phenomenon. Phenomenon description A piece of mica-loaden Nomex® 818 (formerly referenced as type 418) insulating paper (datasheet here: www.dupont.com/content/dam/assets/products.../418_419.pdf) is sharply folded, then placed into a glass containing distilled water. Shortly after, small bubbles start to form at the location of the fold and raise to the surface. If a piece of Nomex® 410 - a Nomex® type NOT containing mica - is prepared the exact same way, no such bubbles appear. If a piece of Nomex® is placed in a glass …

OK I'm not much of a scientist but thought this would be a good site to ask what other peoples thoughts are on what ozone from ozone generators does to plastic and sorry ahead of time if I posted this in the wrong forum. Basically I used an ozone generator in my car not thinking anything could go wrong since the only warnings that came with the generator was not to be around it while it's on and then properly ventilate the area after and that they are safe to use indoors and in a car to get rid of tobacco smells and other things like killing mould, but now I strongly, strongly believe the ozone has caused some kind of reaction with the plastic in my car and even on my pho…

Hi everyone I have difficulties with the binding energy and I hope that somebody can help me out! The task is to order these atoms by their binding energy ( from lowest zo highest) The atoms are C, Si, Ge, Pb, Sn and I should explain why. So I ordered them this way : Pb,Sn,Ge,Si,C due to electronegativitiy. I'm really not sure , if its correct this way , please help me out. thank u !

I am looking for a easy way to make Copper(Cupric) Chloride or Copper Oxide(CuO). Either works. If anyone has any suggestions, please reply to this post. I am thinking of putting copper into a hydrogen peroxide solution. Will that make copper oxide(CuO)?

Hi all, I'm a clinical medical physicist with limited chemistry knowledge and I'm hoping you guys can point me in the right direction with my problem. A new treatment, radium dichloride (223 Ra), is being rolled out across my country but I'm unsure that the risks to staff have been properly managed. If you didn't already know, 223 Ra is an alpha emitting source and hence very dangerous if inhaling or ingesting. My main concern is whether the radium / radium dichloride could evaporate or vapourise from the solution in the event of a spill. I've tried finding data for it's vapour pressure as I believe this to be a useful metric in answering the question. I've on…

I then put in lukewarm water and then the thing with the smell was gone it had the same smell but a different effect don't know if it's just me.

Hi. Reading about non-Joulian magnetostriction, would like to learn if quenched Fe73.9–Ga26.1 makes sense in the alloys world. What would be the 'normal' way to express the given proportions ? By weight, or volume or other ?
