Friends, I have spent some time doing acid-base titrations in non-aqueous solutions. Recently I discovered a very strange phenomenon that I cannot make much sense of. The system is a combination of three organic but somewhat polar solvents (they mix with water, but NaOH is not soluble in the mixture). Dissolved in the solution is a classic pH indicator at about 20% by mass (fully soluble). The solution is then titrated with NaOH predissolved in water at 1% by mass. Reults: ph starts at 4.2 and increases with base additions (despite NaOH not being soluble); upon reaching pH 7.2 the next addition of base sends the solution crashing to pH 3.2. Additional base added does not…

Is anyone familiar with Pierre Duhem's resistance to the atomic model? He is often quoted amongst philosophers of science, and I understand most of his argument, except the one against the atomic model. Be gentle with me. I've never been good with chemistry, and that may be why I'm struggling. Here is his quote about the "law of multiple proportions": "The masses of bodies A, B, and C combining to form the compound M are to one another as the three numbers a, b, and c. Then the masses of the elements A, B, and C combining to form the compound M' will be to one another as the numbers xa, yb, and zc (x, y, and z being three whole numbers). ... Now, in whatever r…

  5. Hi There I make cold process soap and use a lye solution to saponify the oils. I made a batch yesterday and added 24k gold flakes. They have all turned black. Is it possible for the lye solution to affect the gold in this manner? I have checked with my supplier and they are 24K. I am not sure how to avoid this. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you RoseJoy

Hi, just wanted to share my new science project which is underway... making a video for EVERY element on the periodic table. I've filmed most of them, just have a big editing job to do now! As you can see, 10 down and about 108 to go. http://www.periodicvideos.com/ Trying to encourage anyone with an interest to subscribe to the YouTube channel so they can see each one as its posted... it's free and easy, just helps me let people know as each one is done. http://www.youtube.com/periodicvideos (then click subscribe) Cheers for reading. Any feedback more than welcome! PS: I'll pop the table into the "periodic table forum" here when it's finished, just…

Hi all, Basic question. Is it possible to freeze crude oil or engine oil? If so, how? If not, why? Have had some engine oil in my domestic freezer for roughly 24 hours in a small container. Seems to be getting thicker, doesn't look like it will ever freeze though. Just an experiment for arts sake. Thanks,

I mixed HCl and KNO3 and the solution slowly became purple. The acid is blue, mostly because it's not just acid and water, but there is nothing else in it other than coloring and I imagine glycerin to make it thicker. Anyway, what is the purple? My first thought was Potassium something, probably Chloride, but I'm not sure. I searched Google and read a thread about it on this site, but neither helped much. I did find that if it in fact made nitric acid, it would react with the remaining hydrochloric acid and produce aqua regia at least according to Wikipedia, which isn't entirely reliable. Aqua regia is red(ish) and mixed with blue would make purple (that's right, I know m…

If you want to make up for example a 1Molar HCl solution do you have to take into account the specific gravity of the conc. HCl that you're using? From memory I used to measure out 36.5mls of conc HCL and make that up to 1000ml in a volumetric flask. Is there a formula that you can use to tell you the amount of substance you need to make up a given molarity of solution? It's straight forward if you're using solids because the formula if I recall is:- No. of Moles required = weight in grams/molecular weight e.g. a 0.5M solution of NaOH would be 20grams of NaOH made up to a 1000mls. I think:-) Thanks G56

  14. Hello everyone, It is funny that I thought I understood dynamic equilibrium really well but now I have gone blank again. I can do all the calculations and I understand Le chatelier principle well. Here are the problems I have. 2A+B <----> C * If forward reaction equals backward reaction wouldn't those two balance out and be zero. Is the reason why this doesn't happen is because both reactions are continuosly occuring. But please elaborate if you can. *I checked so many sites on this topic and none of them really talks much about what happens to the moles in dynamic equilibrium. Can anyone tell me what happens to the moles in dynamic equilibrium. I…

well, that's one name at least.... I was just going around the web looking at some chemistry stuff and I came across a website selling "Sodium Polyacrylamide" Apparently, it is used in those collars that cool you down and that you wear around your neck. I was wondering if anyone had any additional information. Does it have the same basic affect as ammonium nitrate does when it dissolves in water? Or is there something more happening? No wikipedia page, grrr..... thanks

Today I read a text in a paper, it is very helpful to ours which love chemistry. so I catch the Abstract share with you: The photoionization mass spectroscopy (PIMS) and photoionization efficiency spectroscopy (PIES) of Kr and Kr2 have been obtained using supersonic molecule beam, synchrotron radiation and reflection time of flight mass spectrum (RTOF-MS), and the ionization energies of Kr and Kr2 were determined from their PIES. The geometries, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and ionization energies of Kr2 have also been calculated using MP2(Full)/6-31G*,QCISD/cc-pVTZ and B3LYP/6-31G. When the same level of theory is used, the struc…

I'm brushing up on my chemistry and looking at Enthalpy and it says in my book 'Hill & Holman' that: Standard Conditions are 1 atmosphere pressure, Temperature of 298K and substances being in their normal physical states. Now H&H states that the definition of the Standard enthalpy change of formation of a substances is the heat evolved or absorbed when one mole of the substance is formed from its elements under standard conditions. So in the reaction: Mg(s) + 1/2O2 ----> MgO(s) DeltaH(standard formation) = -602kJ/mol What I don't quite understand, probably because I've forgotten, is that if you want the above reaction to go then you have to…

  19. Hello everyone, Why is that liquids and solids have constant concentrations and are eliminated from equilibrium constants. I don't get it why can't their concentrations change. More importantly does this mean that if water (liquid) is a reactant in a reaction and if we add more water to the system the system would not move in the forward reaction to get rid of excess water. Help would be appreciated. Thanks Example of my reaction 2H20 <> H30 + OH

Why could fruit relieve alcoholism? it is because that fruit is containing organic acids, such as apples are with apple acid, citrus contain citric acid and grapes contain tartaric acid, etc. Wine, its main ingredient is ethanol, and organic acids can interact with alcohol to form esters materials. In that case, it achieves the aim to relieve alcoholism. Similarly, vinegar can relieve alcoholism is also because it contains 3-5% acetic acid which has the esterification with ethanol.
