My question is this: things such as paper do not melt in what we would call a "standard" environment, because their ignition point is well below any melting point. If, however, you heated paper in, say, a pure helium (or other inert gas) environment, would it melt, or sublime? If so, at what temperature? Is anyone even aware of such a thing having been attempted before? (by the way, sorry if this should be in the chemistry forum)

I noticed that when I freeze a bottle of water and then thaw it out, it is filled with little floaties. Does anyone know what this is? The water is crystal clear before freezing. It is in a sealed, unopened, plastic bottle. I've tried different brands of water and the same thing happens.

I have been planning an experiment using some red phosphorus, and today decided to have a closer look at my extremely old sample. It's in a can like a paint can, which worries me because the MSDS states it can ignite due to friction, and the can stays shut simply by friction and every time I open it i have to pry it open. Not only that, but it stinks like sulfur. Why would it do that?

I'm a big fan of Equate Pain Reliever PMs (that's basically a cheaper equivalent to Tylenol PM; it helps me sleep), but on a chemical scale, how do these drugs work? Is it that they require so much energy to break down and digest that the loss of energy is what leaves you sleepy? How do they work?

This is free with no sign in or any of that sort. OK, you have different catagories such as top 50 prescription medications. You click on that, pick out the medication you want a look at. There`s the molecule. you can spin it, add features ,show Vanderwal force in dots, about 15 different choices. It`s fun and you can learn all about your favorite presciption meds or was it over the counter, not sure. If you get bored it`s something to do. Here is the address: [ http://www.3dchem.com/ ]. ...Dr.Syntax ....Post Script : It gets much better. Click onto the : Library of inorganic structures[ over 1600 inorganic structures ] It sure looks like a periodic table to me and incl…

Hi Does anyone know, if there is a database( would be good in sql-schema or in a schema which is easy to convert to sql), which is free for download. Just for basic compounds and their molweight, boiling point, etc?

Hi, I am trying to trap or neutralize the fumes from aqua rigia during gold refining process, everyone I know either does it out doors and does not worry about it or uses a fume hood which can be very expensive. Well I am going to do this out door and have build a scrubber which needs your input. I have rubber tube going from Filtering flask which contains the AR and gold in to the top of closed empty bucket (in case of back siphon) and from top again another rubber tube is going to the second bucket all the way to the bottom, this bucket is left open and is filled with soda ash water. My questions 1- Is soda ash the best option? 2-Is there a better way of buildi…

Whist reading a book on how nuclear fusion takes place in stars I noted that 4 hydrogen atoms are converted 1 Helium atom with the resulting mass difference being converted into energy via E = mc^2. In their calculation (ignoring the mass of the electron) they gave the mass of 4 hydrogen atoms as 6.692 x 10^-27kg which I concur with as 1 proton = 1.673 x 10^-27kg therefore 4 protons = 4 x 1.673 x 10^-27kg = 6.692 x 10^-27kg But it's the mass of the He atom that I'm unsure about. It states in the book that the mass of the He atom = 6.645 x 10^-27kg. However I understand a (normal) He atom (again ignoring the mass of the electrons) to comprise of 2 protons & …

Will the energy gap between the n=1 and n= 3 orbitals be the same in different elements? For example, will the n=1 to n=3 energy gap in hydrogen be equal to that of helium? (it isn't right?)

Hey guys, I was thinking on the topics above the other day, and got an interesting question. Let's say you have a solution of a compound, which we'll call compound X. Compound X has two structural polymorphs; polymorph XY and polymorph XZ. Polymorph XZ much less stable (under the given conditions) as polymorph XY. (I know, a messed- up description, but bear with me...) Now let's say you have a supersaturated solution of compound X. If you then rapidly cool the solution, adding a base crystal of XZ, will the solution, crystallizing around the base crystals, form polymorph XZ, or will the sample be ignored entirely, and eventually a X precipitate will allow a base for…

What does it take to remove the salt from ocean water. I was just thinking if this were possible and cost-effective, it could solve the world's water shortage porblems. What's stopping us?

Hello all, Picking up on Hermann Trude's idea (in a recent post that I was unable to find though) of watching atomic emission spectra of salt by burning them in ethanol/water solutions, I got the following results: - the pure ethanol/water flame was blue - CaCl2 gave characteristic red flashes - NaCl yielded an orange flame, not much different from the orange color of a candle's or matche's flame - neither KCl, nore BaF2 (which is insoluble in water by the way) yielded any perceptible changes from ethanol's blue flame. Do these results seem right to you ? Would you suggest any other salts ? I'd love to see some green, or pink, for example ... Thanks !…

I'm trying to find the pKa for EGTA and google isn't helping much. Wiki says it's 6.91 Another article says it's 8.8 I'm using EGTA to trap calcium and its in seawater which has about 0.1g of Calcium already in it. I'm trying to maintain a pH between 8-10 without losing the EGTA bound Calcium. If someone could help me I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm trying to run the experiment asap.

I am confused about how an acid can have a -pH. For example fluoro anti-monic acid with a pH of -10^31 or something like. Besides 100% dissassociation in whatever solvent how can something like the acid mentioned above be that ''corrosive''? Also why does aluminium foil really, really, hurt if you bite down on it moderately hard (not too hard)? I think I might of put the above question in the wrong section.

Hi chemists I need your help! I am studying for my masters in chemistry and management. I am doing some research for my thesis and have devised a little survey (It will take 1 minute at the most). . Please help me... I would like 50 responses by the end of august. I have £30 worth of i-tune / ticket master vouchers and propose to give them to a random person as a way of saying thanks. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=k7GRM5tnVhwmoMuVDi7NmQ_3d_3d Your help is greatly appreciated:-) Many thanks Dunc

So recently I came across this link, illustrating the steps required to make a really cool glowing flower. Having a rather scientific mindset, however, I was immediately interested in how it worked. I figured out that the oxidation of the phosphorus in the match heads by the hydrogen peroxide was created chemoluminescence similar to the effect in glow sticks. However, I have a few questions before I try it myself, and I'm hoping someone better versed in chemistry can help. Is it dangerous? It seems to me that the mixture of match heads and alcohol would be highly, highly flammable. How long does it last? There's the lifetime of the reaction, and of course of the f…
