How can u tell between a few compounds, which one has the greatest intermolecular force eg. ice, solid ammonia, solid methan, solid hydrogen sulfide and solid ethanol....which would have greatest intermolecular forces?

I need help with determining whether hydrogen bonding with form between two substances. I know hydrgoen bonding occurs between H and F, N or O but does that mean whenever one molecule has a N and one has a H, then they can bond together by H bonding? Surely it can't be that easy!

I know a metal atom like Na, obtaining 1 electron, loose it, and as a cation is being attracted by the sea of electrons.. Since Na's electronegativity is quite low, I assume that it does not have enough energy to attract another 7 electrons, and so it looses 1 electron to form outer shell.... However, how can the metal atom loose 1 electron since I see there is no other atom with higher electronegativity attracting it... as all of the other atoms have the same electronegativity as well, so what is the attraction that attracts the electron from outer shell of every metal atom??? Quick question: Does anyone know where I can find the extinction coefficient of bromocresol purple? Also known as molar absorptiviy coefficient. I have tried CCR, merck, e-journals, scifinder and even enlisted the help of our chemistry librarian and nothing. Any help would be great, I mean if you know the ext.coef. that would be great but I really need to know where to find it more, so that I can site it in my report. Thanks for any help.

I know there is nothing's pH value is greater than 14. But, if a compound ionizes the fastest, 1 mole of it into one 1 of water ,will the pH 15 exist?

After reading through a number of threads where people have been asking for chemicals, I propose a chemical swap (non hazardous), between people via the post. Lets hope Royal mail dont send down the terrorist squad...., so to start of anybody fancy a few grams of KNO3? This technique of swapping has worked time and time again for plants etc, and has provided much interest, so lets give it ago eh?

This area of science is of huge significance. Why doesn't it have it's own dedicated section like 'Physics' or 'Mathematics'. I expect it's the typical scenario of there being only so much demand.

Ok, I know this again, is not my field of expertise, however, I would very much like to know more about anti-matter. Basically, I would like to know if there is anti-matter for every element? Since there is a Mg, is there and Anti-Mg, or an anti-plutonium, or an anti-gold? When matter and anti-matter collide, does it release energy? Can the energy be harvested, or used practically? Anything more to add would be helpful! Thanks much!

I was wondering if any of you have herd of Elememtal Scientifics? If not there website is elementalscientific.net I get all of my chemicals, glassware, and all my other chemistry aperratus there. They have the loest prices iv seen and they have been around for many years but changed there name from Haginoff Labrotorys to Elemental Scientific or LLC. Im new to this forum and just thought you should know about it. You can order a catolog from them for $2.00 also.

hi guys! i have difficulty in understanding this sentence, since English is not my language. here it is : "The elution volume (Ve) is the volume of buffer before which the peak of protein elutes." hallo! yes, i don't get it. does it mean Ve of that protein is the volume of the buffer before the UV-absorbance of that protein or does it mean that the volume of the buffer to the middle of the peak? p.s! UV-absorbance and peak are different things here. thanks for helping!

When we add the solute into the solvent in a container, the substance in the container should increase its mass, but I want to ask, Does it increase in volume? Because I was thinking that if it does increase the volume, then if we have a molarity 3M, we should not add exactly 1 littre of solvent into 3 moles of solute, since the volume shall not be 1 littre any more.... Any one? Albert

I know soap has a polar head and a non-polar head. Therefore, it can attract water or oil and bring oil to leave a shirt. How does soap have the attraction with oil?

Hi, I've got a question. Is there a difference in the concentration of carbohydrates or proteins in fruits as a whole compared to the extracted juice from the same fruit? If so, is there a way I can test for this? Are there any other things that i can test for in an experiment such as this one? Thanky you.

Could there be something in between the protons and neutrons in an atom? Is it just a completly empty space, or could there be another, smaller subatomic particle there that we can't see yet?

Absolute zero is when all atomic or molecular motion stops & I understand it can never quite be reached as per the third law of thermodynamics. Even so , at absolute zero does all electron orbital motion also stop ( or can it ) . also what about the motion of the chilled mass thru space & around the sun or the galaxy ? Is this not motion too ?

Basically what the subject asks, with reference to Hydrogen gas. Is the kinetic energy of a hydrogen gas atom proportional to the energy of its electon or a photon emitted by an electron changing orbitals? I have a few notes on it, but i wanted a definent yes or no answer first.

Hi guys! Well, I did well in my GCSEs and nowm I have gone to do A level chemistry, physics and maths! Well, I asked my teacher on what would be produced if you boiled off the water in sulphuric acid, since it is AQ. She didn't know and told me to boil it so she could find out. Even after the experiment, she didn't know, so question one is, what WOULD be produced? Now, while I was boiling it, it was boiling like normal water until the end where there were about 10cm3 left. It went stable. So, I took out a stirring rod, and started to stir it. Bubbles suddenly erupted from around the rod. When I removed it out, the bubbles stop, when I put it back in, it bubble…
