This is only very loosely related to chemistry, but it's an interesting read (I may post it in a different forum too). http://www.cultdeadcow.com/archives/001276.php3

Hi all! Next year I`ll begin my Ph.D. studies in med.chem. at one of the unis in US. Probably in a position of TA or RA. Thus, I feel that it`d be nice to refresh some basics esp. of physical and org.chem. In add, being an int.student, I`ve never learned chemistry in English. So, I also badly need to learn chemical vocab. Could u suggest which books should buy? I went through the amazon, and shortlisted McQuarrie for physical chem, but am in the dark about orgo. Wade, Bruice, Carey, two parts of Sundberg or perhaps Clayden which is the closest to my background (I took a degree in pharma)? What do you say? Any feedback would be welcome. Thanks, M

In the reaction between calcium hydroxide and sulphuric acid, the concentration of each one plays an important role to the formation of salt. If you don't want to have acid salt as the product as it lowers the pH value, what's the ratio of H2SO4 to Ca(OH)2 do you choose? 1:2? or 1:1?

Ammonia dissolves in water and react with water to form ammonium ions and hydroxide ions. NH3(aq)+ H2O(l)+ HCl(aq)----> H2O(l)+ NH4Cl(aq) Or NH4OH(aq)+HCl(aq)---->NH4Cl(aq)+H2O(l) Moreover, can anyone write down the ionic equation of hydrogen chloride gas dissolve in sodium hydroxide?

is there a simple way to change a feedback system to a feedforward system? I don't know much about chemical engineering (or any thing else for that matter!). do ye need to see what the system looks like?

I have three questions on materials: What common materials are opaque to the infrared and/or the UV spectrum? What common materials reflect all visible light except infrared and/or UV light? What common materials are completely transparent to infrared and/or UV light? They're all similar, so I thought I'd bundle 'em up in one post. Note: By common, I mean available cheaply.

In what condition, the reaction will be a dynamic equilibrium??? ie, there are are both back and forwards reaction taken place at the same time For ethnoic acid, we know it is weak acid, because the reaction taken place in the solution is not completely forwards, it has both back and forward, so is a dynamic equilibrium, but why it does not fully be forwards reaction, like HCl??? The second question reflects the questioning upon the 1st one Any body can help?? Oh, yes, according to my knowledge, for the formula of ethonoic acid, something like CHCOOH, the positive ion is H, and the anion is CHCOO, my chemistry teacher told me that positive ion starts fi…

Why does reactivity increase as you go down a group (column) for alkali metals (H, Li, Na, K, etc.) and decrease as you go down a group for halogens (F, Cl, etc.) Something to do with outer shells? Thanks in advance.

I've never tested this, but when I was at school (frighteningly large number of years ago now) my chemistry teacher once told me that if you put 2 bowls of water outside in the winter; 1 with hot water one with cold water, the hot water will freeze quicker than the cold water! Is this actually true?! If so, can someone explain the mechanics behind it. Surely the colder water would freeze first as it's particles have less energy to start with, and so wouldn't take so long to become a solid. On the same theme: if I wash my dishes up with warm water, the water dries faster than if I use cold water. This makes sense, as the particles in the warm water are closer to t…

Hello. 20 years ago, I had my car windows glass tinted overseas by a guy that removed the glass from doors, applied an ink to the inner surfaces by dipping -or spilling onto- (masking the exterior surface); let 24 hours to dry in a dust-free place and reinstalled them. The somewhat involved job result was a superb, yes, superb hard surface with no visual distortion, scratch resistant, UV filtering and unable to peel off. There was half a dozen hue choices in smoke, grey, clear, goldish, bluish, greenish... Several years later, by accident, a bottle of alcohol leaked inside my car parked under the sun and some areas of the ink "crackled" with the fumes. Does …

I think I FINALLY figured out why some of my sodium is bright and shiney and why some of it has turned into the typical gray sodium oxide/hydroxide color. When I was first starting out my element collection, I didn't really pay much attention to the different densities of the elements. So when I saw some sodium metal for sale on E-Bay I decided to get two ounces of it. Little did I realize that 2-ounces is a helluva lot of sodium metal. Even worse, when the sodium arrived via UPS it wasn't under oil. It was just sealed in a water/air-proof baggy. Suffice it to say, it was HEAVILY oxidized. I had some spare mineral oil from a different element I had bo…

This has been a FANTASTIC day for me. I came into work today and the person in charge of the payouts for my football pool had a nice surprise for me in my mailbox. I wasn't expecting to get paid for my winnings until about March, but today I found my check for $535 dollars. Also, one of my many element dealers that I frequently talk with is able to get me a troy ounce of Iridium for a very good price, so with my winnings I'll be able to get myself a nicely polished 35 gram lump of 99.9+% pure Iridium metal. Finally, I found out today that I will probably be able to add my first pure radioactive sample to my table: Depleted Uranium. Somebody I know does a lot of …

Well, this weekend I had a fun experience with cerium metal. lol. My purchase of a 102 gram block of cerium arrived in the mail on Friday, but it had broken the glass jar it was in during shipping causing oil to slowly ooze out of the crack. Since this would just create a big mess, I decided to take the cerium out and place it in the vial that had my other lump of cerium metal. (The Ce I previously had was a nice, smooth lump of the metal which had a complete coating of green oxidation on it. My new lump is kind of ragged but a LOT bigger with some areas of clean metal and some areas of oxidized metal). Anyway, I went to put my new metal in the jar with the old one …

Hello. As a kid in the sixties I read on a chemistry and physics experimenter's book written for young readers, a simple process to home make something like what is now named rhodamine, capable of dying a whole pool water red with a few drops. Cannot find it now... Does anyone know how to make such a highly concentrated dye/ink/colorant with simple compounds ? Sort of remembering borax as one ingredient, but not sure after 45 years. Oh, those days with no television, no internet... and plenty of good books to discover ! Thanks, Miguel

the strangest thing seems to have happened whilst making some KI. I used Tincture of Iodine (2.5% KI, 2.5% I and the rest made up with Ethanol). and a KOH soln. titrating to the clear color I added a tiny excess of the Iodine tinct, as I`ve found that when allowed to rest, the soln turns clear after a period of time. anyway, leaving that in the flask on the heater overnight to evaporate the liquids, I notived what can only be described as "Glitter", like the stuff used on some Christmas cards or some makeup. now as more liquid has evaporated the "glitter" isn`t. it`s more like larger yellow crystals (and the remaining liquid has a strange TCP type smell…
