What is mechanoluminescence? I've searched around the internet but all I found were research and experiment ON it, and nothing that explains about it. So what is it? Also, I am hoping to do an experiment regarding mechanoluminescence for a school project and I think I will have access to an oscilloscope. What is a good experiment? Thanks a lot.

  2. Hello All, I have been puzzled recently with a question. I am interested in the solubility of CO2 in water as a function of pressure of the CO2. Consider the following: Microbes in a water-based solution produce CO2 at some unknown rate. This microbe/water solution is put into a container with little head space. The microbes produce CO2, the CO2 is dissolved in the water. As the microbes continue to produce CO2 the pressure of the gas in the container continues to increase, as well as the solubility. The container is opened, the CO2 in the head space escapes, along with some CO2 dissolved in the solution. If we knew the final pressure before opening, what wo…

  4. Hi all, To get you started, here are what have been discovered: - Conducting plastics - electroluminescence of polymers (basically polymers/plastics which give off light when sandwiched between two electrodes with electricity flowing through them. After searching a little on SFN to see whether the SFN community knows about conducting plastics and plastics which have electroproperties, I found up to near nothing about it (except the 11 posts made on it last year which people thought it was a fake idea [maybe arguable, but hey....]). Therefore I would like to share to you all a piece of great scientific knowledge to you all. Last academic term during school, a…

hello i am very interested in CRYSTALS. unfortunately my training is not in science. it is in spiritual mysticism and magic. there are many metaphysical properties attributed to CRYSTALS and i was wondering if any of these properties have yet been confirmed by science. i have recently heard of the use of CRYSTALS to create fusion devices and believe that CRYSTALS hold the solution to peak oil and all of mankind's energy problems. can you imagine a future where CRYSTALS are used to create cheap energy wherever it is needed through the powers of fusion? well i am anxiously awaiting your response because i believe that CRYSTALS will provide the solutions to many pro…

In the labs at my school there are 'hazcards' which give details of all the safety hazards of the chemicals we use, along with what dangerous reactions they take part in. Are there any websites which have this kind of information? Any help much appreciated

hi, this is probably a simple question. I am an ambulance officer and as such am always using medical grade 02 i wonder how this is generated; is it a chemical process? eg reacting something with water, or is it extracted from air? thanks any help would be appreciated. Just after some investigation is it just from the electrolisis of h2o if so how are they seperated?

About a month ago I left the dome light on in my car. The next morning my battery was dead. I got my roommate to jumpstart my car, and it's been working ever since, but it's been sluggish to turn the engine over. As time wore on, it seemed to do worse and worse, with the starter motor struggling more and more to get the engine to turn over. Last week, in bitter cold the day after it snowed, my car simply would not start. I got it jump started again, and drove home, and had the same sluggish engine turnover problems that I had before. I was certain I needed a new battery. Monday morning, again my car would not start. So I rode my bike to work, and did this ag…

  17. From my knowlegde: t-butyl alcohol is a tertiary alcohol. It does not react with chromic acid in room temperature ( no reflux). Cr^+6 ions in the chromic acid are red-brown in colour. If reduction occur, the Cr^+6 ions will be reduced to Cr^+3 ions which are green in colour. I have done the above test ( no reflux) using a test tube, what i can observed is two distinct layers with colourless on the upper layer and dark green solution (precipitate?) on the lower layer. Theoretically, t-butyl does not react with chromic acid, but why the colour of Chromic acid changes from red brown to green??

okay I have a project I decided to do, and I need your help. I know I only joined because of this, but men of science are always willing to help.. I think.. anywho, it goes something like this: you get a Coke, and it's flippin warm. it tastes nasty, right? Well what if there was a drink that when you first unscrew the cap, something drops iinto the drink and makes in instantly cold to the touch. Non-toxic, duh. You would be able to enjoy a nice, cold, refreshing drink anywhere now. Even in Mexico, no fridge or cold water in sight. Just open up a bottel of Mr. Cold(what we dall it), and enjoy! It would be a hit in third-world countries, and if it tasted good, in good o…

Here is my question.. How would regular steel wool go under spontaneous combustion or simply combusts by itself? I mean that you can't like burn it in the lab or throw it to the fire. This was the question in last exam. If it helps (it didn't help me; my teacher told us the "translated" version of the question), here is the original question. Under what conditions might iron (steel wool in this case) undergo spontaneous combustion? (If you are reasoning clearly from what you have observed and predict a logical answer to this question, your teacher will verify your answer with a sparkling demonstration). Thanks for your help!

Hi everybody I've begun studying entropy at college and something is bugging me. I know that for any reaction: DeltaG=DeltaH-TDeltaS and for a reaction to be feasible the change in "free energy" or G has to be negative. Does this apply for photosynthesis too? As far as I am aware it would be endothermic, producing a positive deltaH value and it produces glucose and oxygen[gas and solid] from water and carbon dioxide[gas and liquid]. This would cause a drop in entropy, therefore making the reaction impossible. Have I missed something critical? Please help me resolve this!

However, when I was carrying out the silver nitrate test, my teacher did not give my class any pieces of advice. Hi all! Does anyone have any idea of the type of substances would be used to replace silicon as processors get smaller? Would organic compounds meet some of these needs and would the use of superconductors aid in the creator of suck small processors? I'm mainly interested in the chemistry relationships suck as what would be required for something to replace Silicon as the primary component in chips in the future Cheers, Ryan Jones

a year ago i made KI3 by failing to add enough Cl2 to a KI solution. my mistake was that the tube leading to the KI soln was forced above the surface because of pressure. so i've had this 60mL bottle of potassium triiodide in water for about a year now and the label on the bottle has begun to show stains, which is weird. i kind of want to finish the oxidation get iodine crystals. last time i used HCl+NaOCl after fractionally crystallizing the hypochlorite from bleach. i know it sounds pretty crazy, but i kept the water of crystallization and it didnt explode. but come to think of it, i should be able to crystallize again, then add these crystals to the KI3 so…
