It's fairly well known that fish respond to barometric pressure changes. For example a drop in pressure tends to make them become aggressive and seek shallow water, a further drop and they will become less active and seek deeper water. Can anybody tell me how and why they do this?

  3. I have a couple of insects that I would like to preserve. Years ago a friend of mine had a chemical recipe to preserve insects like they had been in hardend tree sap. My question is that if any one knows how to make a fake amber or crystal that preserves insects. My friends solution which I don't have used house hold ingredients and was molded to fit a shape around the insect. So if anyone knows any way to do this, please share the directions.

i am doing a paper on hiv... i have picked to argue the theory that the hiv virus came from the SIV virus found in monkeys/primates in africa... but i am having a few problems so if anyone has any information they could post it would be greatly apriciated. ( i think greatly is an understatement ) "DNA analyses of modern-day strains of HIV show that the virus crossed the species barrier to humans not once but at least three times, forming the three main strains of HIV that infect people today. The probability that SIV coexisted in apes for thousands, perhaps millions, of years and then suddenly jumped to humans three times in a decade seems remote, unless someth…

Hello, does anybody know whether the His6 epitope tag is immunogenic and sensitive enough to be used in immunofluorescence microscopy since it is so small? It has been shown to work on western blots, but I am not sure about immunofluoresce on cells, like COS7 cells. Thanks a lot. s70048

Hi. I've got an interesting question. In the CSI rebroadcast 2-3 weeks ago this dialogue about DNA test results occurred. Gil Grissom (supervisor) speaking to Greg, the technician: "Do you have the DNA results?" Greg: "yes, there are 7 out of 13 matches" Grissom: "that means they are related" Greg: "more than that, they are parent and child" Grissom: "yes" a. Why is this conclusion wrong? b. What should the dialogue be to reach this conclusion? Alternatively, what other conclusion would these data support?

  8. I am trying to write a story that involves a main character who sees sounds as colors with his right eye (but he sees normally with his left eye). I have begun to research online and have found that there is a genuine medical condition, synesthesia (or synaesthesia), in which people's senses get confused, and they see sounds (among other things). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows a lot about this condition and could give me some specifics (if not, I'll just wade through a myriad of internet pages). I especially would like to know about the form the color takes when a sound is heard. Do the colors shoot out from the source like rays of light and just kinda di…

In the same vein as the no head question, how long could you live without a pulse?? in the fighting game mortal kombat one of the characters has a move where he reaches into his opponents chest, pulls out their heart and shows it to them before they die. this, however, is not what i mean. because of massive wounding etc. you would die or pass out pretty quickly. but lets suppose that we had some kind of electronic gizmo that could send a shock of e.m. radiation or something into the heart, disrupt the elecrical activity and bring it to a dead stop without any wounding. how long, then, before you keel over??

A couple things just popped into my head earlier today. Can anyone help me out here? 1. I was arguing with my friend a couple weeks ago on the morals of veganism, and he was seriously not listening to any reason, and when he asked why I ate fish when I was a vegan I said they didn't feel pain...he said that was just a myth, and I honestly couldn't find a reputable source that said otherwise. So, can fish feel pain? 2. I know that Lamarck's theory of passing on acquired traits and use/disuse has since been disproven in many cases, but isn't there a chance that it's at least slightly true? If umpteen generations of organisms used their bodies in a different, similar…

Keep in mind I'm a complete non-scientist. According to Carl Sagan in his book "Cosmos" (from 1980 or so) a single human cell contains about 5 billion bits of genetic information. I'll simplify it a bit and call it 5 Gigabits (not Gigabytes!). He also says our brains have about 100 trillion neural connections, which would translate into about 100 Terabits of memory. So, 5Gb of genetic information and 100 Tb of human RAM. Being a computer geek, I can get my head around those numbers. But are they accurate numbers? I'm most curious to see if any of you have opinions on that. Thanks. (my apologies if this has been discussed before...I'm new to the boa…

Hi everyone, i was required to plan an investigations to find out if there is a relationship between the concentration of phosphate ions in nutrient solutions and the number of cells dividing by mitosis in root tips. I choose to investigate with cloves of garlic and i want the plan to include 'the apparatus and materials to be used', a detailed method to include procedures that i would adopt to ensure that the results obtained were as precise and reliable as possible; then a risk assessment and safety precautions. I would appreciate it if anyone could help me out, the deadline is on Monday. Biola

  20. Basically, I found this small, mantis-like insect on a flower in my yard. I believe it isn't really a mantis in the true sense of the word (maybe a relative?), but when you see the real thing, it's long forelegs are held and waved about in a similar fashion, and the abdomen has rows of spines or barbs. I'd like to know what it is, but none of my books have anything like it. If it helps, I live in central Arizona. Fortunately I have a good digital camera, so here it is.....

I have to design a home experiment and stimulate thinking about hypotheses, variables, controls, replicates, experiments and conclusions on growing microbes. I'm thinking of boiling a strap of grass (nutrient--- all microbes need basic nutrients which contain the elements required to build proteins etc) and placed it in an enclosed jar for several days and bring the samples to the labs for staining and examination. My control for this experiment will be that all jars will have to be the same and cleaned and sterilised in exactly the same manner and I don’t know what I should write for the hypothesis. Any further suggestions? Please help. Most people in my clas…
