what is the maxium running speed of superman without breaking the laws of physics considering he can lift 100 tons his legs are about a 110 cm long and his joints have super fluids i found this equation velocity=cadence x stride length cadence=how many steps you take stride=how big steps are hope some 1 can figure out how fast he can run

well, i think the title is somewhat explanitory -- what do you think is the simplest life form possible? Put another way what are the minimal requirements that must be met in order for something to be alive? Some of the best discussions i have had concerned this question and while i have never really reached an adequate answer, i enjoy hearing others thoughts on this. So, i geuss i will start this off with what i am currently thinking... I think any set of components that are able to self-replicate without the use of outside machinery (or mechanisms) is considered alive. Under this defninition a virus would be considered not alive while a virus-host pair w…

Main Entry: in·tel·li·gence 1 a (1) : the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations; also: the skilled use of reason Are certain races predisposed to be more or less intelligent? I think everyone [in america] notices the general correlation of race and intelligence, but most people don't discuss it openly for fear of being branded racist. A snapshot of the top 10% of students in america would probably reveal 50% Asian [including Indians], 40% White, 10% Ethnic minorities not including Asian (African American, Spanish-American, etc). A study by Bracken & colleagues in 1993 revealed that blacks score an average of 15 points belo…

I'm not sure if this has been brought up yet, but I think that once we understand nerves and can duplicate them, we could build little remote controls, for lamps, computers, cars, or anything really. You just connect the remote to motor nerves, and it'll be internal, so you can't lose it, and you control it by thought. Wouldn't that be sweet? And if we can learn to build sleek jetpacks, we get to fly! no more losing your keys either! You install into the lock something taht will only respod to your remote. What do u all think?

Dear All, I doing research for a collegue essay which needs urgently some different points of view. Anything related to this matter, please reply! How do you picture man in 1000 / 10000 years from now, on the biological point of view?? for example, do you thing that man will have fewer fingers, will the head be bigger, will we have a possibility of using more that on avegare 10 / 15% of our brain? Will we be have different / new body fuctions ? Will evolution allow us to improve the fuctions that we have and/or "cut unnecessary parts of our body" which will not be needed in the future. I know in trying to cover a lot of issues but any help from your s…

wasn`t 100% sure if this also belonged in the Evolution/Morphology forum, but it`s more a biological question It`s known that when certain strong smelling "agents" come into contact with the soles of the feet, that they are rapidly absorbed into the blood stream, you may try this yourself as an experiment, get some fresh cut garlic or Vic`s menthol rub and get someone to rub it on the sole of your foot, within about 10 mins, you`ll actualy be able to TASTE IT! I can understand why underneath our tongues works in a similar way, it`s probably all part of how we absorb nutrients, but FEET??? I want to know, what purpose this serves? why did we evolve this way? and…

alright, i did this lab, on the ph of catalase. I basicly tested the reaction rates at 4, 7 and 10 (ph). My resullts show that the reaction rates of 7 and 10 are the same????? and 4 is even lower. Why could this be, i know that the polar parts of amino acids(-nh2 and -cooh) are attracted to the polarity of the difference in ph. wouldn't it make more sense for one of the ph's to be the highest in reaction rate? i don't get it.

Sometimes when I drink, I get and instant but fleeting high soon after the acohol touches my tongue. Is it going into my bloodstream or is it the placebo effect? Bit of both? Some type of chemical preparation made by the brain for recieving alcohol (which would just be the placebo effect wouldn't it)?

Since the construction of womens and mens brains are being proved so different as far as activity and response to the same enviroments, what is the perfect compromise? Can any couple be absolutely happy biologicaly and emotionally? Can they be constructed by mathematic and biologic equations to work out that way if our science advances far enough? I want to see some happy eternal couples.:bravo: :bravo: :bravo: Just aman

Ok, heres the story. I am doing a group project in biology, studying pill bugs, sow bugs but it you don't really have to know what bug it is to answer my question. Ok, we would be studying which foods these bugs would prefer. There scavengers so they eat a large variety of foods. Now the lab would include giving these bugs a choice of what to eat in a choice box. Now this "smart" group decides, lets see if they like dead plants and live plants. I am in awe how somebody can really think a pill bug, a scavenger, can tell the difference. They also thought, oh what if we put peroni in it. You can see what pain I'm in. Now there not doing the peroni thing but they are doing on…

How does Abiogenesis work. I've had this explained to me before in a way that made more sense than it used to, but largely my ununderstandings are unresolved. They told me that i'd have to have hugely extensive knowlege into chemistry to understand, but I refuse to accept that because I don't want any of that extensive crap, I just want someone to make it simple. I still do not see how chemical reactions (however they become anyway) evolve to create organisms that have their own choices however restricted their intelligence to do so be. Could this proccess be explained step by step please? I guess the possibility of God is even more perplexing, but theres NO way …

on another thread here, an interesting question occured to me, it was about the dividing line between a collection of molecules and Life. This isn`t by any means an Original question, but a search didn`t find it as a distict topic here yet. So what constitutes life? Fire seems to obey most all the qualifications to determine life and yet I for one would hesitate to call it Life (per se). and where IS the dividing line? (think sperm/egg) at what point is it "A HUMAN LIFE"? all the best

Stonehenge Whitestones and their Chronology with the Stonehenge Construction Materials of Wiltshire County, State of Great Britain, United Kingdom... The outcrop sedimentary rocks at Stonehenge are the Late Cretaceous, Santonian Age, calcium carbonates. The outcrop sedimentary rocks comprise the first construction material used by the Stonehenge builders. This material is approximately 85 million years old. These rocks are locally called the Seaford Chalk Formation (Stonehenge White Chalk). The oldest limestone sedimentary rocks at Stonehenge are the Mississippian Period (Early Carboniferous), Arundian Age, calcium carbonates. The Mississippian Period limestone …

Guys there is something wrong with my goldfish! This morning I thought he was dead, he was floating upside down at the top of the tank, but with further inspection, I noticed his eyes were following me around the room. I poked him a little, and he started moving again, I don't know what's going on! The size of his stomach has tripled in the last couple of weeks, he can’t be pregnant he lives alone! He seems to be fine, except for the fact he swims upside down now. Is this harmful? Any advice on what I should do?

I just read a short article (here) that says "The Discovery Health Channel will air a documentary Saturday (Jul. 19) called "Transplanting Memories" which delves into the eerie mystery of organ transplant recipients who experience memories of the organ donor." I did a little research and I found there is a small body of evidence that exists for biochemical memory in flatworms. McConnell, J. V. (1962). Memory transfer through cannibalism in planarians. Journal of Neuropsychiatry, 3, 42-48. McConnell, J. V., Jacobson, A. L., & Kimble, D. P. (1959). The effects of regeneration upon retention of a conditioned response in the planarian. 19. Tonight I was outside and I saw a large slug and 3 little ones 'eating' a worm. Thats what it looked like to me anyways, they were all over it with their heads. I went outside a little later and part of the slug was removed where the big ones head had been, so they must have been eating it. To me this seemed very unnatural and I was freaked out. Do slugs eat worms?

I read an interesting article in Discover recently about a light scanner for seeing inside people. You know how a very intense light held against the human chest in a dark room will show a pink lit body from the back that will illuminate the room. That means light passes through the body. Our technology is trying to make receivers that interpret the light reflected directly back from the body but by minute time increments. Just below the surface some light gets through and reflects and the same with deeper tissue. By measuring that light that is reflected directly back and tuning the time difference of light reception these receivers can see a total visual scan o…

I don't have any articles to back this up, but, I was watching the news, and they were talking about Yellow Stone Park, and in the gyser pocket things, there were these bacteria that fed off the thermal energy. It was like 250-280 degrees or something like that. Anyway, just thought you might find this interesting.

I have an idea, Hybrid all the different ant species, Did you know? There are farmer ants, slave/raiding ants, rancher ants, weaver ants, nomadic hunter ants, foraging ants, guardian ants I have an ideas, take all these ants, Grow them in large colonies, then start mixing up the breeding between the different forms of ants. Then we could mix these ants with termites. Go to Encarta.com and search for Ants Anyway if we mixed these ants all together, we could probably create some sort of extremely advanced(for insects) type of species. A larger, smarter, farming, herding, foraging, hunting, slaving ant race. Termites can eat wood, grass and o…

This stuff has always interested me. What do you guys think about big foot and ol' nessie I watched a really good show on the discovery channel recently. Supposedly they have some DNA from a north american ape that is unidenfitied. They did some good analysis on some of the more popular footage (patterson's) and found some interesting things in the video. They showed where the right thigh of the "creature" shown in the video bulges consistent with some medical condition that would expected in that type of terrain. It was all very interesting. Personally I think there is some validity to the north american ape. Theres a lot of photographic and video evidence, and …
