Discussion of science topics that don't fit under any other category.

I just searched this on Science Forums and saw it hasn't been mentioned. It should tho. Not sure where to post it also so, this is somewhat Tech Science. I first saw this on NextCNN a couple of months back. It seemed amazing and I wonder what Da Sci Members have to say. ** http://www.defense-update.com/products/t/trophy.htm ** --Stupid site puts the scroll bar on the left-- It pretty much stops incoming projected crap (anything from Missiles to gernades). Developed by some Israeli group. I don't have much to say other than it looks amazing. I can't find the video I saw, but it showed a missile coming near a tank and then just disintegrating. W…

  3. I love science and all it encompasses. But I have noticed there are some that disagree with the status quo like Einsteins theory the big bang and such. Can anyone tell me what percentage of the science community is together and what parts are not? The ones that disagree with the status quo state that the ones in the know are spouting dogma according to there findings. Then the disputers arise and tell there side. Why is the science community divided into so many camps? Would not this division cause the non scientist and believers to mistrust science and the scientists that make these discoveries? PLJAMES

a few Q's: 1. Where is the best palce in the UK to buy microscopes, online preferably. 2. What are the basic things i will need to prepare and stain microscope slides, and is there any shops/ online stores (pref. Uk also) that stock these. or just things that would be handy in microscopy. Also like a 'starters kit' would be usefull if anyone knows of a sort. 3. Any good books on microscopy or websites for the begginer? thanks!

Does there exist a substance that is clear, liquid and magnetic? I have heard of magnetic plastics recently and was wondering if a substance like the one I mentioned would be able to be suspended (possibly in space) in an electromagnetic field and manipulated to make a perfect lens. Is this feasible? Would it be any better than the solid ones we have today?

If the universe is composed of these things which physicists state it does and we and this planet and all in it also does, question? Does this energy have intelligence? Like does the tree which is energy know its a tree and how did it become a tree by just energy alone without intelligence or with intelligence? Just a secular answer please. pljames

First of all, I'm sorry if anyone thinks this is in the wrong topic. I looked at all the topics, and I couldn't decide because different people will have different opinions about this post. Some may believe that this is fictional, or related to religion. However, I believe that this really happened, so I consider it to be real science. Several years ago, there were a few teachers in an elevator at a college in Gettysburg. They went down into the basement for some reason. When the doors opened, they found themselves back in the Civil War! The basement was being used as a hospital. There were injured Civil War soldiers everywhere. The teachers pushed a button…

I love basic science, the observable, now there is advanced science, the non observable(without the observed). Wth advance science comes questions, speculations, hypotheses and conjecture. Even with philosophy comes the same. More questions, speculations, hypothesis and conjecture. How deep is deep? How much is to much? Do you understand the question/answer and will you accept the answer? Even tho you observe what if you do not understand or except what you see, then what.Again, how deep is deep and how much is to much? pljames

Hi, my name is Paul I am currently studying an art history degree in the uk, in particular I am researching Piet Mondrian and a painting called 'Evolution' (1910-1911). Having researched a little in to this already I know the painting represents the 'Three Stages of Knowledge', Mondrian himself became an active member of the Theosophische Gesellschaft, which I believed translates as the Theosophical society (a combination of philosophy and theology). I know that the three stages our as follows:- 1. Thales' speculative science 2. Newton's speciality science 3. Rudin's generalism 1. It is believed that Thales of Miletus (624-547 BC) was the first greek philosopher…

Are there nukes that can fit into a suitcase? If so, how heavy would they be and what would the power be? Not dirty nukes, but the real deal. I know that the US had an artillery piece during the Cold War called "Atomic Annie" that shot nukes, but I don't know the size of the projectile.

I am reading some Fred Hoyle (i'm sorry i thought it was a book on evolution) and am realizing that he is the source of most of creationist defenses, lets call them 'power chords' since theres only a few of them and they play them over and over and still think they sound cool. While being the inventor of these power chords, it is unclear to me whether he is a creationist himself. I have three questions: 1. How can he have been such an influential astronomer, and yet have been such a an apparent spring of bullshit? 2. Fred says : the chance of obtaining the required set of enzymes for even the simplest living cell was one in 10^40,000. Since the number of a…

How are hybrid cars that don't need to be recharged more efficient than a standard car? The energy from the batteries ultimately comes from gasoline anyways. Wouldn't it be less efficient to charge a battery with gas and then use the battery to power the car than to use gas directly?

  19. Hi people... Im doing a project for environmental conservation... My group has come to a decision of using people's daily 'exercise' as a form of energy eg. walking, running, working out... Simple actions as such can be converted to electrical energy... other alternative forms of energy that exist in the world would be HEP, solar energy, and wind energy... So to protect the environment and to decrease the amount of fossil fuels being dug out a year... Why not you play a part by using yourself as a source of energy... Why not attach a device to your shoes that can produce energy while you walk... and then use this energy stored to power up your house... firstly, …

  20. Previously I asked if there was some sort of device, which would allow me to measure the amount of CO2 gas in Liquids. I conclude that there was nothing I could do. Some of you suggested experiments, which were very complicated, and I probably don't have the tools to carry out. Are there any simpler experiments I can do, which dont require a lot of tools and HUGE piles of money!!!???

Ok, this is my first post in science forum, I was wondering about something to-do with ants the other day So, here goes the question: Some ants can lift around 50 times their body weight, ok So, in relation to a human that is like a human easily lifting a car BUT. If ants were really human size, Due to the difference in the molecular structure of the ant, and different measurements, (different circuitry system size and different heart sizes, etc). Would the ant actually be able to life something 50 times as heavy as itself then? If it where the same mass as a human (50 – 70 KG) I thought not, what do others think? I can see ant lifting leaf 50 ti…

  22. I looked at the computer through the mirror and I was reminded of something. The screen looked like it had gray horizontal static bars constantly moving upwards. (Hard to describe). I saw a similar effect using a digital camera to take a picture of the tv a long time ago. I also saw on tv that a tv in the tv was doing the same thing. Why does this happen?

  23. I'm starting (or attempting to ) an optics project, but I have run into a rather interesting materials problem. I need something that is fairly (the more the better) transparent to the UV and IR spectrums, but at the same time, is mostly reflective to the visible spectrum (again, the more the better). I have been quite unable to find such a material. I would also prefer it to be cheap, but that is not a requirement. Is anyone aware of such a material? Any help would be greatly appreciated. P.S.: As far as specific wavelengths, I do not know at the moment. I'll try and find that out and get back to you.

I've been teaching myself to use my new torch, and I've got brazing and cutting, mainly because I've known how to solder for so long. I have a really simple question I hope someone can help with. When I try to weld steel, it either just gets red hot and does nothing or it sparks and acts like I'm trying to cut it. Is there some trick I'm missing to get it to flow together and produce a nice clean bead at the joint like I see all the time, or are those made with an arc welder? Thanks!

Why is it that when you put your finger infront of a projector's lens your finger does not cast a shadow, but if you move it away from the lens it does? Further more, if your finger is infront of the lens blocking a portion of the projected image, why is it that the whole image still appears on the screen?
