  2. Hello, I currently attend Queens College in NYC. Part of me wants to major in physics. I am not afraid to work hard - however I hear that the physics major at my school is insanely difficult (perhaps even unnecessarily difficult) compared to other colleges. My questions/concerns are as follows: 1. Does the standard physics undergrad program (i.e. non engineering, rather just pure physics) vary in difficulty from college to college considerably, or is it generally the same everywhere, and rather these people i am hearing things from are either lazy, not interested, not smart enough, or a combination of those three? 2. Granted a professor can make or break a cour…

  3. I want to major in biology when I go to college in a year and a half (I am a junior in high school right now). Are they going to think less of me for admissions when they see that I have not participated in any science fairs or anything. I feel like they'll be like, "This kid wants to major in a science field and he's done zero science clubs or competitions in high school, ha!" My only plus would be I am taking AP Biology next year along with physics, and finishing up chemistry this year. Oh and I cut down an invasive tree species in Wales back in 05 while on People to People...My whole view on this may be insanely irrational...I made a similar thread about a month ago on…

I am confused as to what to major in, really, I need help. See, I want to apply quantum behavior to living systems, from an atomic through a molecular perspective. I am particularly interested in aspects of trying to define variables in terms of natural selection in a quantum perspective as it would relate to an organisms physiology down to a molecular viewpoint. When I think of biology my worldview of the subject basically houses evolution over time of energy/matter interaction or behavior, heavily in an evolutionary perspective. For instance here is a neat study I would like to do. I would like to study phonon behavior in a comparative physiology approach betwe…

I'm currently a freshman in a community college and I am struggling to figure out my major. I put off going to a four-year univeristy because I do not want to waste time or money figuring out I need to be somewhere else. In high school I did really well, and enjoyed, Physics, and I already had 10 credits in physics before college. I just do not see myself in a lab all day every day studying Classical Physics. I tried engineering, but that doesn't quite fit either. Wave/Light and Theoretical Physics REALLY interest me though. One thing I've always thought would be cool is to live in ancient Rome or Greece because there were still new things to discover. The…

Hi, I am currently a freshman in college, and for now my track is to major in Biochemistry and minor in Computer Science. Specifically my interests have always revolved around proteins and genomics, and I'm also interested in programming. Lately upon doing a lot of reading and research, I have become very interested in the Bioinformatics field. All through high school I loved chemistry and always told myself I would major in Biochemistry, but now I'm wondering if I should do that. I don't really want to take a bunch of chemistry courses if it isn't necessary for what I want to get into. My interests stand at a perfectly even balance between biochemistry, molecular bi…

  11. I'll ask these questions to two camps: A. People who are teaching freshmen in an American college setting, do you think that the high school science/math that they've had was really up to what they should have had, or do you find yourself having to backtrack over topics that should already be familiar to them? B. People in college in the sciences/math, do you think that your high school science/math experience adequately prepared you for science in a collegiate setting? Did you have to go to fairly extraordinary measures, like taking classes at a college or AP classes (which my high school at least doesn't even offer) to get the education you needed? Obviously…

  14. Hello everyone. My name is Nick and I am currently a Junior in high school. Since about 6th grade, I have always had a strong interest in the study of medicine, mainly diseases. I didn't start to really think about making a career out of it until mid-last year. In my freshman year of high school, I did pretty poorly in my earth science class. Last year, I did excellent in my biology class (Final grade of 93) but then got a low grade of an 83 on the regents exam. I am currently taking chemistry, and have an average of around a 90 (this is before midterms though). That's just a little background. What I am really getting at, is that I would really like to study medical…

  16. I was wondering what everyone thinks about extra tutoring as i am soon going to take my TEE's(for non-aussies it is the exams you take to get you into university)and I was wondering about doing extra tutoring so i could have a really good score as my calculus teacher has left and we now get a substitute teacher that really sucks.I'm taking calculus as i want to go onto the University of Western Australia which needs a score of 84.0 or more to do Mining Engineering so I was asking you guys if it is worth it to do extra tutoring.

Well it's almost the 2nd semester of my Junior year of High School and I have to start looking for potential colleges/universities that I want to apply to. I have alot of choices for my major: Biology, Biotechnoloy, Ecology/Evolutionary Biology, Genetics. and minor: Graphic Design, Photography, Web Design and Computer Tech. What would be a good major for this? Basically I want to be one of those people that work in Labs wearing those nice lab coats and work with DNA/micropipets and mass spectrometers. And genetics has always facinated me. I also want to be able to do design jobs on the side for a little extra money. I'm leaning towards Biology for my major…

I have two questions regarding a fish and a chicken. does a chicken have consciousness, that is does a chicken know it feels pain or does it just react to pain as a part of biology?because I want to know if it really does suffer or does it just react that way because of internal mechanisms. for the fish I have the same question as well,(fish that are eaten for nutritional value)

  20. Started by Genecks,

I'm going to graduate soon from college, and I'm indecisive about something. I'm not sure whether I should simply grab some loans, go to a university, and get a bachelor's degree OR if I should simply work for a year (probably earning up to $20,000 USD for the year and keeping it), get some loans, pay off the interest, while going for my bachelor's degree. I'm low on money, and I'm not too sure what to do. I don't think I truly qualify for scholarships, though. I know I do not want to be a teacher. If I did that, I'd probably be locked up in some hicktown for five years without the ability to get my master's degree. What would some of you do? What did some of you…

I need to have a few hundred people participate to obtain valid results for my science fair project.) The purpose of this message is to request your participation in an online survey that I am conducting for a science fair project. I am conducting research on a disease known as Marfan syndrome. The survey is a medical questionnaire, similar to what you would fill out on a first visit to a doctor, though it does start out with questions related to whether you have been diagnosed with M…

We are consistently reminded that if we live our lives according to the advice of medical practitioners, dietitians and health specialists that the quality of our lives will make for greater life satisfaction. Science develops products and processes to give us longevity. Is this approach good or are we defying natural law? Have we created a dilemma in temrs of health? It reminds me of the star trek episode where an alien planet was so packed the aliens were jammed up against their spaceship when it landed!

I'd be interested to hear the experiences of anyone's whose been the benificiary of a public school biology class in the Southern United States. How was Evolution covered? I go to a high school in East Tennesee, and here there's not so much hostility as indifference. People just don't want to broach the subject. I'd say about 60% of the students are Creationist, so teachers just prefer not to deal with it.
