Dear all, I wouldlike to present to you INBIOSA Project. The INBIOSA initiative is based on a profoundly newunderstanding of the role of biology in natural and engineering sciences. Ourdriving argument is that living systems have fundamentally different notions ofself-organization from those in engineering sciences today. Therefore, INBIOSAprepares a new research program to investigate the biological imperatives ofcomputation in a profoundly new way. This will be based on understanding thepremises for and the fundamental characteristics of emergence, organization, development and evolution in biology. Our goal isto develop a set of nov…

What are some good youtube channels that deal with science? I'm looking for either science news or explanations of things in science or discussions. I don't want sort of trivia type explanations like "why does a pan show rainbow colors after washing."

So I'm cruising around the internet.... la dee dee da da... and I googled the words: How to become a scientist. The first thing that popped up was this: "Don't Become a Scientist!" by Jonathan I. Katz Professor of Physics Washington University, St. Louis, Mo. Which says in part: The whole thing can be found here: http://wuphys.wustl.edu/~katz/scientist.html What do you think? Any truth in that article? Any thing you current scientists want to tell me.... a possible future scientist? Hmmm?

  7. I cam across this earlier today and thought it might be interesting to others here. http://violentmetaphors.com/2013/12/13/how-to-become-good-at-peer-review-a-guide-for-young-scientists/ I've not had the opportunity to peer review anything or deal with the peer review process at all, so I am unsure if all of these points are really necessary. I'd be interested to hear what others who are more experienced with peer review have to say about it. In one section of the article they bring up the anonymity of peer review and I'm wondering if those who have been through the process consider this to be a draw back? It's not something I had considered, but I agree with…

  8. "In your face" is a study forming part of the research of Laura J Brown, a 3rd year BSc Biological Anthropology student at the University of Kent, Canterbury, United Kingdom. The aim of the study is to examine male perception of female facial attractiveness. The only requirements of this study are that you are male and heterosexual (if you are female, feel free to pass the link on to any suitable male friends though!). ***Complete the study and you could be 1 of 3 guys to win a crate of beer!*** The online questionnaire shouldn't take more than 30mins to complete. Please note that some of the questions are of a sexual nature, so only take part if you…

A recent MSNBC segment called ‘The New Dark Ages’ looks into the recent banning of 54 Mathematics textbooks from schools by the Florida Department of Education, a sanction subsequently endorsed by Florida governor Ron de Santis at a press conference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrJXammBAFE The Maths textbooks in question, many of which are for K-5 grade elementary students, were banned by the Florida authorities because they allegedly incorporate “prohibited topics and strategies” including references to CRT (Critical Race Theory) - which is usually taught as a college level subject. Journalist Judd Legum who is the founder of the online Public Inform…

  11. Hey, people. I'm taking developmental biology in the fall (it's a 300-level class). My knowledge of developmental embryology of the human species is quite lacking, as it is with other animals. I plan on taking a developmental biology course, but I am not sure what kind of things will be covered in that class. Does anyone have any ideas of what a class like that is like? That catalog said we'll be looking at cell division and differentiation. However, I'm wondering if it will be more intense and cover a variety of mammalian species. I'm not sure what will happen in that class.

  12. Hi! I'm a 16.5yr old community college freshman, and I'm hoping for a career as a physician-scientist. I'm currently taking Intermediate Algebra, Macroeconomics, Freshman Composition, and Introduction to Philosophy. This fall, I plan on taking Introduction to Chemistry, College Algebra, and Trigonometry. Next year, I'll take the SAT I and SAT Subject Tests in Level 2 Math, Chemistry, and Molecular Biology. I hope to get into the University of Sussex's Molecular Medicine BSc program --http://www.sussex.ac.uk/Units/publications/ugrad2008/subjects/Molecular%20medicine --. Then, maybe a medical degree, PhD, or both. Is this a good plan to become a physician-scientist?

Greetings. I had recently picked up a Biochemistry book from a book fair for about $10. The price and my interest in the field made me skip a meal for it as all I had was $10. At first I wasn't really aware of the book's age since the book itself was in near mint condition. However; I did notice the photos didn't look very modern and I took a look in the back to see the publishing date was 1999. My question is: Is it worth reading it anyways? I don't want to dwell into the book only to find that most of the information is outdated and irrelevant by modern science standards. Will it still give me some insight into Biochemistry?

Hello, I graduated from UC Berkeley several years ago with a degree in biology with a good GPA (3.98/4.00) though with very few math classes. I'm now interested in studying either computer science or computer engineering to conduct applied research in AI. I have two main options: 1) Pursue a 2nd bachelor's degree at Berkeley (top 3 program) 2) Pursue a postbac/masters at a less competitive university Looking online, I've found that Brandeis and Boston University both offer a combined postbac/masters program in CS or computer engineering that I could probably complete in 3-4 years. My only fear is that this route will make me less competitive for Ph…

  15. I'm an engineer at a shipyard. I received a degree in Aerospace Engineering, but I wasn't a very good student. I could take tests well and get decent grades, but I did nothing like take advantage of the opportunities I had there, mostly because I wasn't passionate about what I was doing. Now, 12 years later I've discovered my passion, and it's space. Working for JPL on robotic missions to other planets would be my ideal job. I can be happy as en engineer. But I would like to be intimately involved in space exploration. To that end, I want to find an engineering job close to a good astronomy/planetary science school and then possibly take classes and get an advanced d…

I've got a crew of ~4 kids going into 5th grade, and like many kids they're extremely interested in science. I went shopping on amazon for books for them but I felt that the books I found there were likely to be too childish for them - I don't them to feel like I'm "treating them like kids." I'll guess they could handle books written at a 7th grade level. Anyway, based on their interests, I'd especially like to find books at a middle school level about disease and immunity, poisons, and the brain. However, I will not reject any good books about science in general. (My own interests turn more toward evolution and astronomy, but I want to let the kids explore things th…

Hi, I'm a highschool student who is going to complete his IGCSE this year. I'm interested in studying wildlife and I aspire to be a park ranger or a naturalist. I enjoy ecology, conservation and the outdoors and I want to specialise in them. However, I am unsure on what to study for my tetiary education. The universities and colleges I have surveyed do not have a course on ecology or wildlife science (most of the time it's medical) At most that they have is general biology, environmental management/science, zoology and aquatic science. Is it the case that I have to go through one of these courses to study ecology and conservation? Or do I have to search for …

I live in Washington State, and attend a local community college. I wish to major in Mechatronics and as of right nowI have completed my general physics series as well as differential, integral, and vector calculus (as well as Gen Chem and other classes). This coming year I will be taking Engineering classes: statics, dynamics, and mechanics. In addition to these classes I will be taking Multivariate, Linear Algebra, and Differential equations. I am excited to finally be able to start the engineering series, but I am a little concerned about the math classes. I am confident in my math skills and study abilities, as such I am rather confident that I will succeed. But, I a…

  22. Hello all, I hope I am posting in the right forum, this is my first time on this site. This is my same handle as on physicsforums. A quick background: I am 23. I was working in banking, making around 85k, and was on track to make 120k next year, and about 500k in 2 years when my boss was handing on giving me her business. Then I got fired this week over a ridiculous code of conduct violation (doing a transfer for a friend...not sure why this is illegal as nobody complained). So, now I am doing some thinking. I have a 3.13 in economics from temple. I was lucky as hell to be making the money I did with that kind of degree and nothing else really jumping…

I want to be a researcher. I participate in undergraduate researching to have a sense of what it is like. I love it. I love science. I have been considering Virology a lot. I LOVE viruses; they fascinate me. I would love to research them. My questions are: 1) Is Virology is suitable field? My cancer researching professor says it's actually a very good field as of late. (this is not involving salary, but more in terms of competition vs. job security). 2) Do…

Ok, let me tell you about myself. I live in NY and go to college in NY. I intend on attending medical school 3 years from now. I am technically a Junior, credit-wise, however this is my second year as a college student. I brought to college 36 credits from College-High School programs ran by two popular universities in the state. In English I took 12 credits in (more than enough to satisfy what was needed), but I averaged I believe a B+ (however, i was awarded with a small scholarship in English in senior year, I was the only one, how ironic b/c I didn't do the best). For the most part my other credits were A's (maybe one or two A-). Now my first year of college (last yea…

We are consistently reminded that if we live our lives according to the advice of medical practitioners, dietitians and health specialists that the quality of our lives will make for greater life satisfaction. Science develops products and processes to give us longevity. Is this approach good or are we defying natural law? Have we created a dilemma in temrs of health? It reminds me of the star trek episode where an alien planet was so packed the aliens were jammed up against their spaceship when it landed!
