Hey guys, I saw a thread dedicated to Seti@Home, but I ran some searches and found nothing on Folding@Home (aside from a few posts in that mammoth SETI thread). Anyway, I was wondering if anyone was interested in this program. It's a distributed computing program run by Stanford Univeristy just like SETI. Basically, you run protein folding simulations for them and teh results are used for medicinal research in order to find cures for related diseases like cancer and Parkninson's. With all these members, you guys would make one crazy folding team!!! There are also a lot of other team that would love to have you along if you wanted to join. If you're interested, click the l…

Are you: A) A member who lurks on the forums all the time, just waiting for a post to happen. B) Someone who pops in and quickly checks for new posts, then leaves. C) Someone who only comes on if they have to ask a question. D) Someone that comes rarely and stays a while to read all the posts. I used to be an A, but now I'm a B.

there`s been a new website opened up today giving UKers a chance to see what risk their area is in for a flood. http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/?lang=_e just enter your post code in the box in the right hand column for a reasonably detailed map.

Is this true? That for example here in the states Bush has been raisingly terror alarms repeatedly without any real signs and now alot of people could care less. What could be done about it as well?

How does one define a hero? Is it acting for the good of others as Joseph Campbell explains in one of his interviews, or is it more based on survival of one's self before the survival of another, as Ayn Rand explains in her book "Fountainhead"? How do you describe a hero? What makes them a hero? Who do you agree with more- Campbell or Rand (altruism or self-sufficiency)?

Ok, so I do alot of wrench turning. I've been rebuilding a datsun truck L20B engine this past weekend. While we were assembling pieces and parts, one of us had a question we can't think of a good answer. When dealing with tools, in this case, ratchets and sockets, we have a 1/4 drive, a 3/8 drive and a 1/2 drive. Obviously since 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 are standard measurements, I was curious how ratchets are labeled in the UK or somewhere that uses the metric system. I know 3/8 is close to 10mm, 1/2 to 13mm, is this the answer?

Great article at Aerospace America Online about SpaceShipOne. Lots of technical detail, which I've found to be generally hard to find, about the ship's unique design (even the Wikipedia article is skimpy). http://www.aiaa.org/aerospace/Article.cfm?issuetocid=446&ArchiveIssueID=46 It's interesting to compare how remarkably different their flight profiles are from, say, the early Mercury suborbital missions. Rutan & Co'ss choices have been so astonishingly different from conventional wisdom that they could be said to be completely re-writing the way in which we think about space travel. Just to give some examples of that, let's start with the fligh…

Sorry if you have already seen this but this is jokes: The US government has a new website aimed at preparing its citizens for terrorist attacks. It's another attempt at scare-mongering in the style of the old "duck and cover" advice of WWII. The funny thing is that these pictures are so ambiguous they could mean anything! Here are a few interpretations... If you have set yourself on fire, do not run... If you spot terrorism, blow your anti-terrorism whistle. If you are Vin Diesel, yell really loud. If you spot a terrorist arrow, pin it against the wall with your shoulder If you are sprayed with an unknown substance, s…

Post your favorite expressions that have caused international confusion. The cousin whom I am about to visit is a clone of Hyacinthe on "Keeping Up Appearances". (and you ask why I am only staying a week). One time when I had broken my hand, she sent me a note in which she told me to "Keep my pecker up." I couldn't believe what I was reading from Miss Prim and Proper, 'cause in American slang a "pecker" refers to a strictly male appendage, located below the waist. I wrote her back and said, "Sheesh Liz, I would if I had one." She was quick to inform me that in England, it refers to one's chin. Anybody got any others to contribute?

In police chases you watch on the television machine-- the car is driving very fast away from the police. The car is being reckless------ why? As long as you stay within the main flow of traffic, there's nothing they can do to safely stop you, so why be more unsafe than neccisary? Plus it wastes gas to go so fast. Why speed away? Why not just drive away? And if such a humorous event does occur how long would it take to end it? till the gas runs out? If such a thing has not ever been done, i intend to do it within my lifetime. Easy to instigate--- just cut off a cop, then do stupid crap right in front of him. Once he turns on his lights, start driving safe and nor…

anything but, nothing less/more than etc. I would like to know why the following phrases have such meanings: [Maybe it is difficult to explain though  It would be very grateful if you can try to explain] - anything but (= definitely not) Does "anything" mean "everything" here? But anything is used with not, like "I don't have anything". So it seems to mean nothing. I know "But" here is served to mean an exception. - no/nothing less than (=competely, exactly, surely) - no/nothing more than (=only, just) - more often than not (=very usually) Thanks a lot for your help.
