I'm looking to get into the computer field, but I need some direction. I have always been in sales, and I'm looking for something a little more stable now. I have always been naturally good with computers, but I have never taken any training. I don't even know which each field does. I have a bunch of questions, and need help. Which classes are a must to take? Is "information technology" the right degree to go for? Thank you all in advance for your help!!

Well as anyone who isn't living in a hole will know there has been a format war going on recently, HD-DVD and PS3 With different companies supporting each such as Toshiba, Microsoft and Universal who were advocates of HD-DVD, whereas Fox, Sony and Disney were Blu-ray supporters. But it looks like it is going Blu-rays way, this is due to many of the big companies choosing this formats side, including just recently Netflix and Best Buy who will only be stocking Blu-ray discs in the future. Even more importantly Toshiba one of the bigger supporters of HD-DVD from the beginning have also left the format presumable to go over to Blu-Ray to maximise their sales. This t…

Which one will you choose? Have you picked a side yet? Maybe you have players for both? There is some discussion at the moment about the various advantages of each format... slightly better quality on Blu-Ray, conventional DVD format on the flipside of some HD DVD movies, and so on. Let's hear your views

I was just wondering about the use of an integrated circuit and or software used as virus protection in a router. I have thought about as a good means of virus protection more so if you had two different ones going combined with any system anti-virus software.

Has anyone tried the new Internet Explorer 7 BETA: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx It seems to work well, but I'm not sure how to test it to see if the security has improved or if it complies better with the standards. I do see that in the version that comes with Windows Vista BETA 2, you can disable ActiveX and other plug-ins. What do you all think about the new version?

Why is it that most web pages all scroll up to down vertically? Why not side to side horizontally? Why do pages have this vertical orientation? Is there any practical or psychological purpose to this or is it just a quirk of history?

I used my USB Flash Drive and transferred some files from my computer. Then later, when I have to remove the device, I noticed that the My Documents folder was already in my memory stick. I can't delete or transfer it to the computer. What might be wrong? I swear I did not send the folder to the Flash Drive.

Hi guys! New chances are opening up in the city I live, but few conditions are limiting me of getting them. And one of them is programming:doh: . I'm thinking (and I really need to) of learning to program, so I was wondering which software would be the best to start with, and if anyone of you could recommend any books to read about that, that'd be great. Any help would be mostly appreciated! Thanks!!!

Well, I ventured into AJAX, had some fun with it, managed to build a registration system that validates fields in their prospective <div> tags and it worked like a charm.... ...In Firefox only. I did some digging and I found out that there is another way to do things with Internet Explorer, but I couldn't manage to integrate them into my existing code. Anyone has any idea how I can automatically detect a browser and use the proper form for AJAX in IE ? Thanks! ========= CORRECTION ========= I just re-checked, and it works great in *my* internet explorer, but not at work. I assume it's because my workplace blocked ActiveX from loading (I don't…

I was thinking recently how I can protect my own code as a copyright material. Seeing as I publish it online, it is a somewhat of a problem. I found this: http://haacked.com/archive/2006/01/24/TheDevelopersGuideToCopyrightLaw-Part1.aspx But I was wondering if anyone here knows or has any opinions/thoughts about this. I'm not sure if this was discussed before, but it's a major concern to any developer (newbie or professional) that intends to either build something for someone else, or publish his system on the outside world. I guess server-side programming (like PHP) is a bit less of a problem because the code isn't visible. But what about Javascript? copying …

... is an Apple Macintosh. This according to PC World magazine, in a recent test of a dozen Vista laptops. This rather earth-shattering piece of news has been shaking up the Windows computer vendor industry, with companies like Dell, already suffering from falling user opinion, suddenly finding that they're not producing anything LIKE the correct performance numbers that Vista should be capable of, something that Vista users have been screaming about since early beta. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,136649-page,3-c,notebooks/article.html And one of the most interesting things about this development is that the Mac doesn't cost significantly more than th…

If you were trying to program an AI system, what language would you use? The canonical answer seems to be Lisp/Scheme, although any functional programming weenie would probably tout their language of choice simply because they believe functional voodoo is perfect for everything. Long ago there was Prolog, the "natural language of artificial intelligence," which has since fallen into disuse. Nowadays, I'd say Erlang. But not necessarily as a functional weenie. The brain uses a shared nothing message passing architecture to achieve massive concurrency. Neurons are discrete and don't have anything like shared memory, such as the type multiple threads (the c…

I want to become a computer scientist, I love computers and I would love to have a career working with computers. I'm going to community college but I might transfer to a bigger and better college after a few years. How difficult is it to become a computer scientist? I'm not very good at science but I'm willing to work as hard as I can to get where I need to be and succeed in computer science. Is being a computer scientist a hard career or is it a reliable career?
