so i had this really sweet idea and i need some help on the parts im not sure about. So i thought if i bought a really cheap sell phone, and wired it somehow that it would always answer. I would use a computer connected to a phone of my house to communicate with the robot. Now I would need to make some sort of modem to connect to the robot but i'll get to that. The main idea i have is to have a video camera transmitting composite video back threw the telephone to me and me transmitting back commands to the servo controller on the robot. So in the end i would be able to continuosly roam around outside with the robot from my computer. Now to communicate with the robot i…

I was just in an argument over this. Maybe I don't know as much about computers as I thought I did, but I was told that a memory or hard drive wipe doesn't do anything if there was something you wanted to hide. I'm sure there was some exaggeration, but the other person said that every keystroke, even mistakes, are saved in the computer and can't be deleted via memory wipe, and no matter how many times you try to delete a file it still exists in a restricted part of your computer. I don't think it's true, I mean it doesn't fit from a business point of view (if you can fit that much info in something so small you can't find it when looking for it, why not make norma…

I am a neuroscientist and have an interest in the near future of designing a neural network. The purpose of my neural network will be to understand the structure of input sentences and to communicate in return to these sentences based on either programmed database information or based on user input information. Would anyone be interested in working on this? I am unfamiliar as to languages which are "best" for this although I do know some use C++ and that would most likely be fine. Please let me know!! My goal would be to have a website which will run this for testing. It's a simple and finite goal for NN I can do all work except the physical progra…

I picked up an old Dell computer for free. The copyright on the mother board says 1998 so that gives you some idea of how old it is. Its got everything it needs to run, minus the case, so I figure I'll just make a case and give it to my sister for her to use. Everything goes well, case gets built and everything fits no problem. But I want to make custom power/reset buttons for it. The original Dell power/reset buttons are on a circuit board thats attached to the mobo via a small ribbon cable. (I'll try and get a picture of it tomorrow) Anyway, I take a switch from Radio Shack and I attach it to the two pins on the mobo that I believe to be for the power switch. …

Hoya My computer science teacher just gave me a moderately old mac powerPC, but she kept the monitor that went with it, and gave me a different one. Here is the thing: the monitor jack on the....well its not a tower, its one of those horizontal ones....whaddaya call those? eh, the Computer part....is an older monitor port, it has the 15 pins but in two rows, and the monitor i have has 15 pins put in....i think 4 rows, might be three, but its the new kind. So anyways, i'm wondering if all the pins are just the same and aranged differently and i can sorta rig it to work, or do i need to buy a special adapter that corrects for any greater issues? By the way, it has OS 8…

  8. Well, as the title suggests, i want to make a quiz. This is how i want to quiz to be: There should be a range of different types of solutions. Like 1 of 4 options, text input, or even, more than one choice. After the form has been submitted, there should be a brief on the questions that are answered. like the following: 1.You answered blah blah. This is correct 2.You answered blah. This is incorrect, the correct answer is blah blah it should work out the final score, like 10 out of 12 etc And it should also wor out the percentage. Thanx for ur help. I know its a little complex, but any help would be good. Thanx again

Okay, I've searched everywhere and I've tried everything, and nothing seems to work. Yesterday I got a Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB. I installed it, installed the drivers, programs, etc., but when I went to play games, it is extremely laggy, like maybe 30 fps at times. I tried different settings, went to advanced display options, but it made no difference. I've updated the drivers also. Does anyone know what it could be?

Have you ever heard of Knoppix? It is really cool. I am currently running it. Knoppix is a Linux based OS that is bootable from a CD! You can download all the files off the Net and burn them onto a CD and then boot off the CD and actually run Linux with no installation. It comes with a ton of programs preinstalled on the disc. The only bad thing is you can't save any settings. You also can't save files to your Hard Drive if it has an NTFS formatting. Knoppix (and Linux) only work on a FAT file format. Knoppix is really cool though. It picks up a lot of settings automatically. My internet connection is picked up immediatley! That's why I am on the for…

Hi, Im trying to create a constraint which will have a fixed length of 10. The constraint i have used is: CHAR(10)constraint Now according to the books "CHAR" should be a fixed length, in my terms a fixed length of 10, however, i have just tried to insert some values consisting of 9 characters and it was accepted. Do i need to add something to the constraint to allow the user to input exactly a fixed length of 10?

In case you have never heard of it, MyIE2 is a great Web Browser. I use it and it is quite stable. Even though it is based on IE it is a great Microsft Alternative. Check it out at http://www.myie2.com It has great features like tabbed browsing and IE plugin support as well as a built in pop-up blocker. I will never use IE again!

Does anyone have realistic ideas as to how to build a working AI, specialy considering the ability to make a conversation. My current idea which I am trying to program, is to use a database where each word would be given a property of what it is, i.e. nouns, verbs, numerals, etc. In addition I would make the AI parse every sentence written to it by analysing the text, like finding subject, object, verb and so on. If I combine this with a way to describe objects to the AI (another database), I believe I would have a quite nice, working AI. What do people think about this idea?

I have an idea to create the Genetic Engineering Programming Language. In the hope it would help biologists understand microscopic organisms. The language could allow biologists to build organisms in a computing environment using the sohpisticated language. What are your ideas? & What does the Genetic Engineering Programming Language mean to you.

Does anyone know any software which will create a graph of stress/strain from a table of stress and strain values? Whenever I try with Excel it puts stress as one axis, then plots strain as a line on the graph. Can someone either tell me how to use excel or give me another good graphing program? Thanks.

My browser is going extremely slowly. Nothing else is, just my browser. It makes no sense. For example, right now I am typing and I have to wait for a long time for my text to catch up to where I am, and I type at about 40 WPM... not 7000. Simmilar thing with scrolling. And the more complicated the page, the worse it gets. Needless to say, typing in some of SFNs threads is insanely tedius. I have IE6, winME and this just started happenning right out of the blue. I just deleted and reinstalled windows rencently if that has anything to do with it, but I don't think so b/c I deleted the registry along with windows. I have 576MB of RAM and 70% free reso…

A few of my friends on computers told me to check my computer security on a site run by some TV PC guy. It's at this site here It's free software called shields up and when I first went there they only tested computers and I failed. I went to ZoneLabs.com and they have free software called ZoneAlarm which I now use. Since then they now offer software free at shields up and I don't know which would be better or which I should use I now pass the previous test and am invisible. Still the ZoneAlarm in the past week has stopped over 2000 attempts from the outside to connect with my PC. This is the first time I have had a decent firewall. I'm still a novice so could I …
