I just bought a new motherboard and cpu. The computer store I bought it from installed the cpu into the MB and tested the whole thing before I picked it up. I brought it home and installed the new MB/CPU into my computer. At first it wouldn't power up at all, and it took me a while to figure out that they had installed a (jumper?) for 5+ standby power. I believe tis should have worked anyway, but didn't. When I switched the jumper to 5+ (no standby) the computer powered up, bringing me to a 'Windows did not load' screen. At this point I probably should have booted up with the motherboard cd that came w the MB but I didn't. Instead I booted up with the Windows XP…

Does anybody know how to write equations in HTML? I've tried looking at the source of sites that do that, but for me, Notebook shuts down after about 1', and all of the sites that do that have really long and complicated scripts, like this site. I read on some other sites that there's a way to put forms of TeX in HTML, this would probably be the easiest, then I don't have to learn a completely different language. I find it rather strange that HTML has to resort into other languages to create equations when HTML was invented by CERN.

Hi everyone, I'm reading the paper "A Case for RAID" and I'm having difficulty understanding some of the calculations made. Example: So as X gets larger the above gets larger. This makes sense because it will take more time to repair more disks so the average number of second failures will grow. However, I'm not exactly sure how the formula is derived. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Well i know a lot about computers, and basically my life revolves around mine. I am an avid gamer, forum junky, photoshop and lightwave 3d artist, and i also make a movie from time to time. In any case, i know a lot about computers, but one area i am trying to break into is programming. So i signed up for a programming class at my highschool to try and learn. Well we are learning Java in the class, and i have a few questions... 1. Can you compile java programs into a .exe or are they always going to be bytecode files that need an interpreter? 2. Is Java a good first language? 3. What are some of the main differences between Java and say C++? 4. How hard is it …

I know a lot about how to set up and maintain firewalls, i know their features etc but do not know a lot about how exactly they work. there are two types of firewall: Hardware and Software firewalls. Hardware: these are basic firewalls which block out any unrequested packets. Software: a software firewall is what is essential for ALL computers connected to the internet (that is assuming you do not wish to be hacked), software firewalls do the same job as a hardware firewall + more. It is this "+ more" which means that a hardware firewall (often found in servers/routers) are not really adequate for your main firewall... i tend to think of it this way: 'har…

If you knew an OO programming language...Let's say Java Whenever you are programming, you always use the jdk doc, especially its api but since it is quite a big doc, how can you know where you can find the best class to make an object for a better function?? Secondly, if you are programming big, how do you apply UML? do you just draw the diagrams your self??? By the way, finally we'd have alot of .class files... I have seen people made them in just one *.exe file, how is it possible?? Albert

HACKING IS ILLEGAL IN ALL COUNTRIES however the above rule is not 100% true, for instance when if one were to have a home network where you owned ALL of the computers, network and hardware and everything attached to it you could legally hack that... why? because hacking is gaining unauthorised access to another computer, however if you own the other computer and you give yourself permission to do it! then it is not unauthorised and is therefore not hacking and is therefore not illegal. I, after a few years, have now set up my own network with 3 computers, they are all owned by my family and myself. The computers are connected to each other but NOT the internet... …

Quick question. I'm trying to make a 3D array in the sort of: array( 1 => (1, 1), 2 => (1, 1) ); type of way. I inductively assumed the following would work but I get a "parse error, unexpected T_DOUBLE_ARROW": <?php $tt = array( 1 => (1 => (0, 0, 0), 2 => (0, 0, 0), 3 => (0, 0, 0)), 2 => (1 => (0, 0, 0), 2 => (0, 0, 0), 3 => (0, 0, 0)), 3 => (1 => (0, 0, 0), 2 => (0, 0, 0), 3 => (0, 0, 0)) ); ?> So obviously the above is wrong but my good friend google doesn't seem to have a better way. So, anybody know how? (This is going to be my filing system for a new game I'm working on: [x][y][info])

I have a question for the computer experts: "whats one of the first things you do when you buy/receive a new computer?" For me personally, I format the HD. I do this because I usually buy brand-name computers with bundled hardware/software (gateways, dell etc.). My reasoning is that these "bundled" computers come with a million "Extra" features installed which slow down the computer. I feel that a clean install does wonders for a new comp. My gf just bought a brand new laptop (gateway). I've implored her to format the HD right out of the box. I claim it'll increase the performance of the computer, and make it operate more smoothly and efficiently. S…

http://nogods.co.uk/ Still being tweaked but it's essentially ready to go. I'm looking for regular contributors who can write a couple of hundred objective words every 1-2 weeks, and the occasional larger article, on issues relating to [acr=Intellectual Property Rights]IPR[/acr], piracy, and so forth. As compensation for your time you'll receive solid gold replacements for your legs, and a house brick.

This is quite a basic question, yet I haven't figured it out. When there's a folder uploaded, and you enter the url for just the folder (like www.<<inserturlhere>>.com/something/), it goes to the index-file if there is one, otherwise it opens the folder. So, how can you see the files in a folder without getting redirected to the index-file?
