i use AOL instant messenger, and something i would really like to be able to do is put up different away messages for different people, so when my brother says hi, hell get a message specifically for him, whereas if my friend leaves a message it will tell him something different. im curious if any of you have seen a mod (like deadaim) that will do things like this. if not, im curious if any of you know how things like deadaim work well enough to know how to make something like this. i know some java and C++, but not enough to really be up to a task like this. ideas i have been thinking about include making a mod like dead aim, or using some kind of packet sniffer …

My dad just got a cingular family plan to my dismay. At least i got a phone, but ive always hated cingular. I went to their website to check my minutes used, and that night i ran xoftspy v. 4.12 and it found a trojan/cws combo and one process. I deleted both. I suspected it was cingular so i went back to see if it was cingular and i got the trojan again, and now im infected with the same trojan, and two running processes and i cant delete them. I ran norton, and adaware and they found nothing. Only xoftspy pics it up. The file path for this is C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe I went to the file and found a bunch of files that started with tfs and went on to b…

I here all this talk about bits (binary digits) and these new 64 bit processors compared to the old 32bit ones. But what is a 64 bit processor (prosumably its 2^64 somethings) like most other computer systems for bits? How are the new processors different? How is windows x64 different? What will be the difference in proportion? Cheers, Ed

I am not studying Computer Science at the moment but knowing some C++ and Virtual Basic fundamentals could come in very handy when I finish varsity. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good web resources about the two languages and/or any good books even so I could teach myself. I am not tatally new to programming since I have had a lot of exposure to Java so I know the basics about things like OOP and stuff. Actually if anyone knos any good resources about Java too, that would also be much appreciated. Thanks very much in advance.

Hi, I am wondering if anyone knows of any good data and file recovery software (free, and fully functional) that works in that it looks for deleted files (particularly files from another user on this same computer, as I deleted my old user-account for Windows XP) and finds everything from that user account. I also have an already recovered *.zip file, however, the file is unopenable presently by simply attempting to open it, so I am wondering if anybody knows how to receive the files that are in a seemingly "corrupted" zip file, as the file appears to contain some or all of the files, but it simply doesn't open up in winzip (or, at least it didn't when I tried). So, i…

I recently put up a thread asking things about the suitable OS for people to learn the skills hackers aquire..... I don't mean crackers or anything like that.... I think the one who deleted my thread is merely ignorant..... What on Earth do you guys consider discuss something about hackers inappropriate??? Hackers are just computer masters, they obtain the big idea of computer science, and are very intelligent people, since computer sience apply to many things.....and relate to many things.... Isn't Linus Torvalds a hacker as well?? so as Eric Raymond?? I just want to learn computer very well, as hackers or computer masters, but I just …

Ok, in the same line as the thread about upgrading RAM, I have a question.. I am planning on building a computer pretty soon, and its the first time I'll be building one, as opposed to just buying it all assembeled. I was just wondering what key things to check for as far as mother board, CPU, and RAM compatiblity, to make sure I don't do something stupid, and buy stuff that isn't compatible. Or if anyone happens to know of a good source to check the compatibility of such things? Thanks for your help...

Im not a computer genius, but i do like computers and know a resonable amount aboput them. I had a old win 95 and it was the top of the line back then, and it totaly went to crap(like all computers). I have a nice dell (hyper threading, cd burner, dvd drive, pentium 4 with ht tech, 144 gig hard drive, 512 mb of ram, ect) and i dont want it to go to crap as fast as the last computer i had. I want to slowly upgrade it to keep it nice. The first thing i want to add is a some RAM sticks. I understand that you need to get the same type of ram thats in there or it wont work right. I wrote down what was on the ram sticks and wroe it in notepad. Im sorry if its kinda crude: R…

PSU = power supply unit I understand that resistance in wires causes heat, I can understand how a processor generates soo much heat, I can understand that a PSU produces quite a bit of heat... What I don't get is that no matter what I do the PSU fans always belt out warm air! I mean, what the heck is going on in there that produces sooooo much heat?

Ok, here's the scenario. I get this email that has a virus on it. I don't open it up, though, but now I'm trying to figure out whether my friend did it or not. Here are some of the key points. 1) The sender has her name on it, and so does the email address. 2) I never received any emails from her until 3 weeks ago, one day after I sent her something. In other words, she didn't know my email prior to my sending something to her. 3) The first virus email had a list of all her friends' emails, although the next two didn't. The first point makes it really suspicious. I can't imagine somebody without access to her email doing it.

What i call my 'good' computer has been down for a long time. One day it started acting up on me so i shut it down. Big mistake. Now when i try to boot it up it goes to the HP screen and then where the Windows XP loading screen is supposed to come up it says "NTLDR Missing,, press CTRL - ALT-DLT to Restart" on a black screen in grey test with nothing else on the screen but that. I tried using my restore discs that i made but i tseems that every pther file cannot be recovered. I orderee restore discs fomr HP and its the same thing. Every other file has an error during its recovery. This is really getting on my nerves and i was wondering if anybody knows whats going…

I was wondering how durable laptop computers are. I have a Compaq Presario X 1000, which is a good laptop. The reviews on Compaq laptops gave them a good durability rating, but how durable is that? If I was using my laptop in a car, and the car hit a bump, could it cause the hard disk to skip and delete an important file? How fragile are the components in a laptop? I always carry my laptop in a case, but I was just wondering how durable they are.
