I'm working on a research paper, and I need a bit of general feedback on something. As I understand it, most flavors of Linux are still free, but some of the bigger names now require payment if you're a business. So an individual can download Fedora, but a company has to pay for Red Hat. Here are my questions: 1) Is that right? Or can a company, for example, download and install Fedora on a bunch of workstations without violating a license agreement? 2) If I want to run a server for a company, say to act as a file server, not for e-commerce or any kind of profit center, just infrastructure support, can I do that for free, or do I have to pay for it? (As…

so, I need to help my sister out with getting two programs that exactly (or almost exactly) do what photoshop and autocad can do I was thinking qcad and the gimp, but I'm not familiar with either of the main programs that she needs so I can't honestly say to her that the programs are equivalent. she needs them for college, so they do need to be pretty much the same as photoshop and autocad, and fully copatible any suggestions?

When someone has Portable firefox on a Jump-Drive, with settings to delete history, cookies, etc. what type of traces do they leave behind in the computer console after shutting down PFF and removing the jumpdrive? What possibilities, using computer forensics, are there to finding out the where abouts and obtained information that someone using Portable Firefox has come across? Are there possible ways for someone to find out what websites someone has visited with PFF? If PFF loads into RAM, wouldn't the traces of history and whereabouts be deleted and lost once the computer console is shut down?

a clever computer scientist has devised a RANDOM ADVERTISING SLOGAN GENERATOR http://www.thesurrealist.co.uk/slogan.cgi? where you put in any word, the name of some concept you want to promote, like war or love or bathrooms, whatever and it will suggest an advertising slogan for that concept or product or person so I tried it. http://www.thesurrealist.co.uk/slogan.cgi?word=bathroom you might get some different result though, because it's random so if you do I wish you would post it here, to give an idea of whether it is really inventive or repeats itself or is essentially braindead or not. I think it is quite promising, myself.

I just got an email from my free server today. In short, it said that my host will no longer be offering free hosting. This is a true shame; this particular host was by far the best I have ever had. I have until the end of this week (the 28th) to find a new host. The majority of what I have now is listed below: Hosting package: Free; Subdomains: 1 / 20; Parked Domains: 0 / 3; Addon Domains: 0 / 3; Mysql databases: 0 / 10; PostgreSQL Databases: 0 / 10; Disk usage: 3.46 / 100.00 MB; SQL Disk usage: 0.00 MB; …

I have just bought a very good hosting which I could access via ftp and ssh. However, this is my first time experience, so I need some help. 1) when log in via ssh client program, I got this: bash$ what does that mean? 2) how do I configure a .htaccess?? 3) I have designed a little php file, but the bad thing is, I can actually see the content of it. eg, http://www.xxx.com/xxx.php. Why? Beside, I feel sick using terminal instead of something easier like cpanel. Does any one know a quick short guide to understand all this kinda stuff?? thanks

I am looking for a way to set up a site that lets people post in categories, but won't let anyone reply. Also, the poster must sign in to post anything, but anyone (signed in or not) can view all the posts. I cant use forum software for this and basically i'm trying to do something similiar to http://www.craigslist.com Anyone got any good ideas? I normally do layouts and don't have a whole lot of experience with coding so i figured some one here might be able to help me out. I have heard some suggestions from people about using blogging software for this but i'm still skeptical on how well thats gonna work. Basically people will post advertisements for their stuff an…

im learning how to wright html, and as an exersize im wrighting my first (offline) webpage. its just gonna be a simple jobby explaining to my barely computer-literate family how to use the antimalware programs, what to do if they catch some malware and how to do a few piddly things like defrag the hard-drive etc. the site itself, from a html pov, isnt going to have anything flashy in it: just a colection of text, a few links to other pages on the site and a frame up the top of every page with links to a few of the other pages, sum, umm, i forget what theyre called -- those things you link to by appending #blah on the end of the url -- basic stuff like that, no jav…

For those who have been out of loop, it seems you can now run osx on x86. From what I have read there are two ways of doing it. no 1. You need at least a SSE2 capable CPU. If you have AMD64 which is capable of SSE3 then apparently you will get every functionality, but sse3 isn't necessary check the following link for more instuctions http://www.360hacker.net/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1108 screenshots: no 2. is using VMWare, don't need sse2 google to find instructions. Let us know if you have tried it and got it working. I might try it a bit later.
