Money is sort of the water, that waters the many gardens within culture. Money is very organic. Any aspect of culture can grow with this water. The purpose of this topic is to present an experiment, to determine the affects of watering the IQ and EQ (emotional quotient) with this cultural water. The angle I had in mind is best explained with a thought experiment. Say we had two men, both with an IQ of 100. One of the men has to work without resources, the other is given $1M. The problem we give them is to build a house. The man without resources may form a crude shelter out of a cardboard box. The man with the money can ask around and get himself directed to a builde…

Being addressed forcefully by authority figures, thunderstorms, brooding over past experiences that time hasn't put far enough away, negative tones and ideas of the world around you inflicting morbid mental health. Is there any material on methodologies for working through things like this? Instead of having experiences and becoming stronger from them, I instead feel like I'm just piling more and more weight on me and I'm sinking and that as time goes on I'm just getting chipped away at until when I'm an old man there will be hardly anything left but a ruin of a man, broken and defeated by the world around me instead of being able to successfully create and protect my own…

There is a video that despite aiming lay people and using an accessible language, it provides a basic understanding about the biology and evolutionary psychology of human “nasty” sexual behaviour: rape, sexual predation, cheating, gold-digging, etc http://youtube.com/watch?v=As49mSwIWWw&mode=related&search= ( Use the Pause button in this video in order to read it at your own pace. It is a bit speedy. )

We could be more different to each other than what we imagine. I will start giving a simple example. We have differentiated photosensitive cells ( cones ) in our eyes. Each type is sensitive to different luminous electromagnetic frequency. Unlike what some people think, these cells do not “read” the colour of the light rays. Colour does not exist in nature. It is a perceptual construct ( qualia ) of particular neuronal circuitries in our brains. It is how our brains interpret and translate to our consciousness different slices of the light spectrum. Since we are all allele mutants to each other in some set of genes or other, it is perfectly possible th…

I was once told – "With every assumption, there is a risk". And it still rings true. I use this meaning of the word - 'Something taken for granted or accepted as true without proof; a supposition: a valid assumption'. In my experience assumptions are rampant in society. Assumptions are rampant within family units. Assumptions are rampant on this very forum. 1. So, what might be the best simple tools to reduce assumptions? 2. At worst, and before we go to war, are we simply held hostage to using multiple and lengthy communications between parties in order to clear up assumptions? 3. Are assumptions the best natural way of gathering information and making qu…

You may be familiar with the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis. It posits that one's language intimately effects one's worldview. The classic demonstration of this is a study conducted with Finnish, American, and Israeli children. The languages Finnish, English, and Hebrew have increasing degrees of gender-specific phrases. The study tested how quickly children of these three cultures understood gender-concepts (for example, recognizing that you can't change your gender by wearing the clothes of the opposite sex). True enough, the Hebrew children were first, followed by the Americans and then finally the Finns. Alexander Z. Guiora, Benjamin Beit-Hallahami, Risto Fried, and …

The logic & self awareness of the everything & nothing By Giorgio Martoni WGA Registration Number : 1225347 If the everything includes all that exists, Can anything be removed or added to it? If the nothing is all that exists outside of the everything, Then it is my conjecture that their relationship and interaction, Is the basis and logic that has formed life. If there cannot be everything without the nothing, Then the totality of them both is one, And the one becomes an entity of it’s own, That I propose is self awareness itself, Existing eternally and consciously aware of the reflection, That forms between the interaction of the everything…

Normally, political correctness is discussed in political forums. But it is actually a condition that is better addressed with psychology. To begin let us look at the term "political correctness". The first word is the operative word. Politics often has less to do with objective truth and more to do with using subjective image to create the illusion of objective truth. That is why spin doctors are so important to most political campaigns. The terms political correctness adds up to using subjective spin and image to define objecitve reality. The term scientific correctness is more vigorous and typically require solid and repeatable data and/or repeatable logic to define re…

Hey, im doing an experiment on the effect of framing (positive and negative) on risk seeking and decision making. a positive frame makes the reader lean towards the less risky answer while the negative frame makes the reader lean towards the more risky answer Here is one of my questions which is negative framed. Imagine that you have a serious disease and must decide whether to have surgery or take medications. The medication, while not particularly dangerous, is also not extremely effective. The surgery is very effective and 70 percent of those who select surgery are still alive six months later will you choose: a. medications or b. surgery p…

Here is a mind example to ponder in psychology. It has to do with how reality can be seen differently, depending if one is a specialist or a generalists. A specialists will narrow their focus so they can see things close up in all its details. The generalist has a wider view and sees more of the picture, but because of the wider field of view, often misses out on the details. Both are important, providing both details and context. Here is an illustration of this contrast. We have a photo. The specialist will use a narrow beam of light to focus on one part of this photo. This will allow him to look at its many details. As we zoom it, we notice a female who, by her pos…

I was listening to the radio this morning. The talk show host cited this statistic that said that currently, ~60% of the US population believe that homosexuality is not a choice, that gays do not choose to be gay. Whether that means there's a genetic cause or a irreversable environmental one, I'm not sure. This got me thinking. Why do people think of human sexuality as black and white? People are either gay or straight, male or female. A dichotomy exists in people's minds that I'm not sure actually exists in the real world. In terms of genetics and biology, there are weird things that happen in nature all the time that show that things like gender and …

I’m interested to learn more about Evolutionary Psychology study which represents modern scientific research delivering a solid conclusion regarding human behavior, explaining how a specific behavior is genetically determined, and what that mutation was reinforced to solve. Could you please suggest me a good online course?

I cant remember this study, and Im going to use it in my research paper. study was done: people walked over a stable bridge or a rickety bridge, and on the other side was an attractive person of the opposite sex. The person on the other side of the bridge gave the participant their info, and said to call if they needed anything. the people who walked over the rickety bridge, called far more than the people who didnt, and this is the idea that they falsely attributed their excitement to the attractive person, and not the bridge. anyone know who did this and what it was called? it would help immensely thanks

Tee hee, maybe my title is misleading, we all know Freud is dead, physically, but his teachings? Let me explain. Me and friends have been in a......debate. They are of college age and have been taking basic college psychology courses. (United States) One day, somehow, Freud get's brought up, and they say "Freud's a crackpot." Is this true? Has Freud "died" in the scientific community? I realize that a..few... of his theories are shunned, but I was of the opinion that psychoanalytical theory was still pretty popular and generally held in high esteem. I've been studying Psychology for a while, but I admit most of my sources are outdated. (What is Walden II? Just…

I have now met two people who have had their brain's electrically shocked by psychiatrists at psychiatric hospitals... One of them had it done two years ago and so I think it's still going strong in the UK... They weren't psychotic or anything - they both just had long going depression... They were treated at a private psychiatric hospital (not going to say which one) but both were paying for the treatment and willingly had ECT done on them... I was very shocked by it all... It reminded me of that film 'one fell over the cucco's nest'... It didn't do any good for either of them... I read their medical notes and their history wasn't abnormal except for suicide attempts... …

I've had this since I can remember, and probably why I've done nothing about it i.e I'm used to it, but it's now becoming rather tiresome and sometimes embarrassing. I guess because I'm now (ancient to some, young to others) 30 and I'm getting rather irritated that I get this mood, which reminds me of an introverted teenager, completely lacking in self esteem. I get these slumps in mood, and I can't pin point it to any activity I may have recently been doing, or any change in my circumstances e.g work becoming stressful. However, and it only lasts a couple of days at a time, and also happens without warning, but I just sink into this incredibly low state, where I feel…

Does this sort of thing happen to you once in a while??? Earlier today I took a nap, of which I always do when I wake up early, for about 1.5 hrs. And then, I woke up, well sort of. I say sort of because I don't know if I was awake. Like, I know it wasn't dreaming, since I was aware of my surroundings, but I couldn't get up or move that much, even though I wanted to. My head and body felt too heavy to move. Of course, my sight was a bit distorted, and eyelids were barely open, but I knew I was not hallucinating and could actually see. I could feel some part of my body moving like my fingers, but I felt like I did not have much control over it, more like "yeah, I …

An interesting item in the New Scientist. Australian printed edition. 16 June 2007, psage 24. Psychologist Rosemary Rowe states that, in young children, the symptoms of ADHD closely resemble the symptoms of a child who is severely frightened. She suggests that a lot of kids are diagnosed wrongly, and put onto drugs, when what they need is reassurance from parents and a good cuddle. Lots of things frighten young children, including scary stories, their own imaginations, and actions of adults. According to Rosemary Rowe, the extreme symptoms of strong fear in young children strongly resemble the symptoms of bipolar disorder, and she notes that those diagnose…

You know when you misinterpret the lyrics to a certain song or something someone says, and it sounds absolutely hilarious the way you heard it, but you only laugh after having heard the correct interpretation? Why is that? Why do we laugh only after we've heard the correct interpretation? For example, the other night my wife said "And monkeys might fly out of my butt" but I heard "And Lucas might fly out of my butt" (Lucas is our 1 year old nephew). I knew I didn't hear that right, and I even knew it was funny, but I didn't laugh until I asked "Did you say Lucas might fly out of your butt?" and got the answer "No, monkeys". Another example: That song by Sloan was …

Is it a scientific fact that certain psychedelic drugs cause depression and/or anxiety? I've heard rumors from a couple sources that it's true. One source sited a whole list on online articles linking marijuana in particular to depression and anxiety, but they were all US government sites (so there may be a bit of anti-drug propaganda involved). If it's true, I'd like to know more. I'm not sure what specific questions I'd like to ask, so maybe we can devote this thread to a general discussion on the topic. That being said, the kinds of questions I'm inclined to ask are: Is it any psychedelic or just a select few (like marijuana)? Is it a strict chemical cause or is it…
