The question goes like this: The measured activity of a radionuclide was taken at 3-day intervals. The Following readings are uncorrected for background radiation. Time(Days) :0 3 6 9 12 15 Count Rate (Per Minute):145 100 71 52 39 30 The count rate was measured again 2 months after the first reading and foungd to be 12 counts per minute. ESTIMATE THE BACKGROUND COUNT Well........How do i work it out

In frames A and B we see the starship enterprise travling at 0.8c and shooting an ultra-powerful planet-destroying super burninating ray gun at a giant space-mirror. Frame A is from the viewpoint of the people inside the Enterprise (I know I know, its third person, but I didn't feel like making the view from inside the starship). Frame B is the viewpoint from stationary people watching the starship fly by at near luminous speeds. From what I've read, no matter how fast you're travling, light will always travel at c relative to you. So if you were inside the enterprise, light would be traveling at c away from you. Now, wouldn't this pose a physical problem…

I believe I have an analogy as to how a single dimension might be percieved, and how we might see other dimensions . You cannot smell where something is coming from, how big it is, what it looks like or whether it is moving. It is merely an indication of something that exists, although you can tell the difference between objects, and increasing or decreasing intensity would offer a hint as to its relative movement. But imagine smell is the only sense you have. You do not have sight, hearing or even contact senses, but you can move around out of your own free will, indicated only by your sense of smell. The smell would change as you find new objects, get stronge…

I remember being taught the nature of the unviverse according to a certain scientist, I don`t remember if it was a book, TV documentary or a person? excuse my inability to give an EXACT quote, but it was MANY years ago! and went something like this: The Nature of the Universe, imagine a single point in space. then stretch this point into an infinately long line. join the two ends so that it forms a circle. spin this circle at infinate speed until it becomes a Sphere. turn this sphere inside out. the Universe is the bit that`s in the middle ! no, I did NOT make this up, I did actualy hear this somewhere, but does anyone know WHO said it?

I heard off a mate yesterday that the lowest temp pos is -275'C which is absolute Zero. It is not posable to reach this temp due to the fact that to contain somthing 100%, is imposable as any contained substance will in fact be touching the sides of the container, thus energy will be flowing in to the target. is there anyway of knowing just what would happen to anyitem, if all the engergy was removed by reaching -275'C... and would the same thing happen as when you burn something? let me know, im intrested to hear more on absO.

Endless attempts to find logical link between weak forces of a long-range interaction and strong forces of a short-range interaction, to explain a nature of gravitational and electromagnetic fields, to understand what is the space, vacuum, time, infinity and zero reduce us to various improbable suppositions and ideas. On the other hand, there is a doubt in a immaculacy of the officially adopted theories, which cannot give a comprehensive explanation for all these actual problems. I participate in forums long enough, therefore for me the judgement was formed, that the great theorists XIX and XX of centuries had made for us the path, which inevitably reduces everyone ente…

someone said earlier that we should know more about space before we should travel through worm/black holes but surely there is no way to simulate the same ammount as gravity there is in a black hole right the accesleration would have to be huge... infact what is a worm hole and does anyone know that they exist or is it like black holes we know they are there because of the effects they have on the gravity. also whats all this hyperspace stuff that they talk about on movies like star trek sorry i'm a bit :lame:

yet ANOTHER idea occured to me. many threads are about understanding the 4`th dimension and above (I don`t and can`t guess beyond the 4). how about a trick that often helped me in trying to understand things called: Reverse Engineering I`m sure EVERYONES heard of that by now). here`s a way to MAYBE look at things.... we know of our 3d world, height, width, depth. How about trying to Imagine a a 2D world, and what must a 3D being (like us) seem like to our hypothetical 2D inhabitants? I live on a peice of an infinately thin sheet of paper, I have all the space in the world! (MY world). I can go left i can go right, I can go as fast as I like and in all these dir…

The typical take on time travel usual is as follows... |____________________| _A_B_C_D*_A'_B'_C' D*' _3_4_5_6__7__8__9_10 *= time jump All variables= equal an event n=the progression of event In this classical view of time travel, event A Prime proceeds event C and the traveler is competely aware of the jump. To him, he is "viewing" what had happened at the time period he has traveled back to, rather than actually experiencing it for the first time. Equally, because of this jump into another time frame (while still following ones own, seemingly, natural progression where A' is the seventh event) two of the same people can exist at the same time, Ca…

What are your takes on the evidence for the new pentaquark. Three seperate facilities have found evidince for this exotic particle. One of the most interesting facits to this is the fact that the Z+ particle has only one strange quark involved. The exact composition is uuddanti-strange. http://www.usatoday.com/news/science/2003-06-30-matter-usat_x.htm has some information from the Japanese colaborators. Jefferson Laboratories is currently preparing their paper for publishing also.

The following is proposition of a new theory of gravity similar but different to any I've seen published or discussed. I would like your thoughts, critiques and criticisms relating to what I am suggesting. THE WAVE THEORY OF GRAVITY AND INERTIA I propose that gravity is caused by higher dimensional interaction between strings or branes that form together make up matter in our normal four dimensional space. When the higher dimensional material forms together it sets up a vibrational wave that travels in higher dimensional space. This wave propagates in all directions from all normal matter at the speed of light. When this wave encounters …

A have a theory i'd like you guy's to give me your opinion on. I have no evidence, and not much education on physics but... THEORY: The universe goes in cycles of life. As of now, it is believed that the universe is expanding. Eventually super-massive blackholes will engulf all matter and energy untill only one, ultra-super-massive blackhole remains. The intense gravitational force will casue the atoms to spilt apart forming Hydrogen and Helium. Then, somehow, part of this matter is changed to anti-Hydrogen and anti-Helium, resulting in a explosion 'the big bang'. Thus a new cycle begins. If anyone can disprove this theory, please tell me why. Its o…

Someone pointed out this paper to me, what are your thoughts on it? I've never taken any physics courses, so I can't really accurately assess his points...what do you guys think? "Why do photons from the Sun travel in directions that are not parallel to the direction of Earth's gravitational acceleration toward the Sun? Why do total eclipses of the Sun by the Moon reach maximum eclipse about 40 seconds before the Sun and Moon's gravitational forces align? How do binary pulsars anticipate each other's future position, velocity, and acceleration faster than the light time between them would allow? How can black holes have gravity when nothing can get out because esc…

It is becoming increasingly clear that the current model we have of gravitation needs serious revision. So much so that a newer version: one that can accomodate critical density, dark energy and matter and the integration of forces at the macrocosmic and quantum levels of scale, might be unrecognisable to the original version's progenitors: Newton and Einstein. What I am going to attempt here is to disprove two of the fundamental tenets of the current model: the first being - gravity is generated by mass; and the second - gravitational effects are transmitted via the graviton. If gravity were simply generated by mass certain solar phenomena, ie the solar wind and…

.- Does anybody know a reference for an intuitive model of the work function? If not, is there a simple quantum mechanical model for it? .- Does anybody know of a simple model for a solid - electrolite interface?. .- What about a metal - metal interface?. .- I'm looking for an intuitive or mechanistic model of electron displacement (transport) at the interface of two metals in orden to explain potential diferences between them.

Well, like the thread name says: What causes us to see colours? Not the biological reason of how it goes into our eyes, and our brains re-intrepret the data. I mean, I know white light is a form of wave, which when diffracted, can seperate into other forms of electromagnetic radiation, with different wavelengths; red having longer wavelengths than say, blue. But what causes these wavelengths? I'm doing a Chemistry lab right now; and want to go a little beyond; Anyways, I'm frazzled for now; thanks for any replies.

Sorry I didn't have the attention span to read all of the other time travel post, anyway I'm starting my own. The dude that posted it has some good ideas for his own beliefs, but they are just one way, not the only. Traveling into the future, by skipping over time, I see as absolutely possible if we figured out how. Stopping time, might be possible, but it has lots of problems that would arise: *If you are traveling between time, it still takes time to do one thing, I don't see a way past that, it takes time for something to happen (thats not a problem, just a comment). But in the time which is stopped, you are traveling with infinate speed--- you can do any amount …

Donno if this exactly fits into this catagory, but I don't know which one it does fit in: I know an octave of frequency is just its double--- thats simple--- I also have the equation for figuring any musical frequency(written down somewhere, you can look it up yourself if you want, well actually if you even don't want to go through that just email me and I'll find out for you) I was just wondering if anyone knows the reason why we have 7 musical notes each octave---- is there a scientific reason for these degrees or is it just the standard way used. If there is a scientific reason notice that there are 7 notes, and also seven colors. We know why there are those colo…

What is the velocity of electrons within a conductor? Does the velocity change when Electromotive-force is increased or decresaed? It appears as if the energy is moving at near or even at the speed of light, but it is my understanding that the electrons actually move very slow. How can this be?

It is a while since I have used these, so can anyone explain to me the meaning of the magnetic vector potential and the electric scalar potential ? I know how to derive them, no problem, but what is their physical meaning? while we are at it... anyone got a good definition for gauge transformations?
