Hello you all! A nice Solar power plant has just been inaugurated in southern Spain. It's called Gemasolar, efficient browsing keyword: http://www.torresole...asolar-plant/en http://www.nrel.gov/...fm/projectID=40 (http www) youtube.com/watch?v=GhV2LT8KVgA http://www.lemonde.f...#ens_id=1271383 (French) Why the provocative title "the Sensible Way"? - It converts Sunlight to electricity through heat. The huge light collection area is made of "cheap" mirrors, not of expensive Solar cells. - A turbine and alternator can have 40% efficiency, as opposed to <10% for affordable Solar cells. - Heat is stored in a cheap bulk material to produce electricity during…

Hello! I have a question. Do I have to deposite the chromium on the glass for silver deposition? Chromium is too dark to make device such as OLED or solar cell. I want to increase transmittance... so............................ Do you have any idea about silver deposition without chromium on the glass? (Lilke surface treatment using solution.) Thank you for your favor

Hey, I am currently working on a research project and we are trying to solve future urban transport problems; i.e. more people living in cities will cause enormous traffic congestion. We aim at finding new ways of solving transport or even invent new futuristic vehicles. If you think of cities in 2050, there will be an incredible amount of information sharing which can be used for a semantic system to predict traffic behaviour and flows so as to avoid traffic congestion. This could be used for e.g. robotic cars. Furthermore, cars as they are known at the moment probably will not exist anymore but other vehicles will be used to enable flexible mobility in cities. In thi…

Hey everyone. I've been working for quite a while on this one. I've been trying to make a VT100 terminal emulator through serial port (RS232 standard) using Easy8051A development board. I've written down the entire code for writing from hyperterminial (yeah, I nedded XP for that) to a 2x16 LCD (8-bit mode) and also for writing from the board to hyperterminal, but I got stuck trying to bring the two together. I know I must somehow use serial interrupts to check whether a key has been pressed or not but I can't just quite figure it out. I'll post the code down here, just in case anyone has any bit of idea of how could I proceed. This is the code to write to the LC…

(Apologies if this is not quite the correct category, I couldn't really find any single category in which to discuss this. The primary query is at least a matter of engineering more than anything else.) Does anyone know of any figures for the energy return on invested of the nascent organic PV technology? Or perhaps know of anywhere I could find figures with which to calculate this. I'm given to understand that the state of the art has rather fantastic payback time (measured in months rather than years), but rather short total lifetime. With this being the case I guess one would have to consider transportation/mounting/wiring/installation/etc costs in addition t…

Hello nice people! From time to time, I'd like to compute the minimum force that buckles a truss, and hand computations get quickly too complicated. So: could you recommend me a piece of software for that? What I need: - Quickly learned and installed, for Windows, free of nearly (I know that's incompatible) - Something like 30 nodes and 60 beams - Input as a text file would be just fine Thank you!

Lots of scientists are racing to find ways to power cars without expensive fuels. Some people suggesting having a car that runs on hydrogen, and then, funneling the water that was created back into the engine. Unfortunately, due to the law of science that says that no system can ever be 100% efficient, that wouldn't work. However, what if cars ran on magnets? Public roads would be replaced with tracks that are made of north pole magnets. The tracks would look like metal T's protruding out of the ground, which would keep the cars (with north pole magnets on the bottom) from simply being lifted up into the air. Tracks, in this case, would have to go into each pe…

Hello you all! Rocket engines often pump liquid propellants in their combustion chamber, and many cycles are used to power the pumps, the best known being: http://en.wikipedia....le_%28rocket%29 http://en.wikipedia....le_%28rocket%29 http://en.wikipedia....le_%28rocket%29 but here I'd like to describe uncommon cycles, which may be new and of my invention. ======================================================================== The first sketched cycle cracks in a pre-chamber a hydrocarbon or an amine with hydrogen, which produces methane (chemists call this hydrogenolysis), some excess hydrogen, and enough heat that the following turbine powers all pumps t…

Hello forums, I'm new to this site, but I was wondering if some of you could shed some light on this problem I have. I'm currently working with HF, but need to create a fume hood to ventilate it from the work area. I've been trying to look up ways in which this can be done, but I've only come up with a lot of health and safety reports. Many sites have lead me to look into such devices as fume scrubbers, picking tanks and other fume hoods, but don't explain how to construct one. The amount of HF I'm working with is maybe a small beaker( <250ml) of this acid, so the apparatus doesn't need to be industrial in scale. If possible, I'm trying to make it will i…

I'm creating a test setup similar to a dyno and am trying to detect the torque from a motor shaft. I am using an Eddy Current (EC) Brake to absorb the torque coupled from an engine. Below is a rough sketch of the test setup. The brake will be centered on a plate that is allowed to rotate on one side and is supported by a load cell on the other. Can you guys help me with the statics of finding T_1 (Torque from the motor) knowing the values of W, L and F_y. Thanks!

I have a set of speakers plugged into an apple AirPlay unit. When the AirPlay device boots up and successfully connects to the network (when the light turns green) there is a "pop" or a noise like your ears popping. Is there a reason for this, or is it a sound effect maybe that apple designed the AirPlay device to produce when it was ready for use?

I have 2 pieces of 4" I.D. PVC. They are about 5'6" long each, and partially cut open to make a 'U' sort of shape. Now, my question is, is there any way to make a curve across the length of the PVC, to make a sort of hemisphere shape?

What do you think about the Freedom Ship? Here is their website address: http://www.freedomsh.../overview.shtml They call it a community that is on a mile long ship which travels slowly around the world and has everything a regular city has such as schools, hospitals, airport, ship ports, residences, vacationers, businesses, and a shopping mall. This is in the making now. They have well thought out plans and even offer the prices to purchase or share residences. I copied and pasted the following for more information, "click on the URL site below to view the Freedom Ship Discovery Channel video clip. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8962310630082930010 ".…

I have Worked out the force needed to punch one hole in 6061 aluminum 3mm thick. Now I need to know what force is required to punch 11 holes spaced 300mm apart in a single length of the same product at once with a single rail holding the 11 hole punches?? I am not a student it is not homework!! I'm sure that over distance and the number of holes, would increase the force required, but by how much I am unsure. The hole punch required is a 4.7 ton hydraulic hole punch. Would three spaced out evenly over a distance of 3.7m give me enough force to punch the 11 hole simultaneously. Anyone got any ideas or tip on how to work it out let me know please. Thanks

I'm trying to build a subsonic ramjet to try and get the technique down so I can make a cluster to put on a go-kart, bicycle, or lawnmower. I've looked all over the internet and the only reliable science and math I can find is for supersonic ramjets or from a hobby forum that doesn't really seem to understand math. So basically what I am trying to find out is how narrow my diffuser needs to come down to and the length of diffuser, how that relates to the combustion chamber and nozzle, and the best shape for my fuel injector. If you can give me the equations it would be greatly appreciated.

I want to develop a nanosuit. Like the one in Crysis. It's basicly nanomaterials that adjust to certain situations. They change shape to withstand blasts, become invisible (reflect light), increase speed et c. and they connect to the nerval system. You controll it with your spine et c. What field would be more likley to give you the chance to work with stuff like this? Engineering Physics? Medical Engineering? What?
