  1. Whenever we think of infinity or try to define in our minds how large infinity is, our answer becomes finite. Which is what you are doing. Thats the way the human mind works. Almost like saying "infinity is this big". If you size infinity, then it is no longer infinite.

However, suppose you are correct and that "infinity", as we apply it to space and time, does have a finite size. It only means that whatever this infinite universe is inside of must be bigger. Will we call that "infinity+1".

I would like to know where you are going with this. I'm still interested.

it wasn't the spider that crept up beside her

but Little Boy Blue and his horn.

  3. I’m having trouble visualising it.

I thought Hyperspace was a thing invented to allow Han Solo’s space ship to escape the Death star.

This is what I have dug up so far.

Around 200 B.C.' date=' Euclid's extraordinaire proved that there are only five regular polyhedra, polytopes in three spatial dimensions: the tetrahedron, cube, octahedron, icosahedron, and the dodecahedron. In 1901, Ludwig Schlafli showed that there are only six regular polychora1, or polytopes in hyperspace.

One may believe with more dimensions, there are more regular polytopes. However, the fourth dimension is as complex as it gets. This is because each dimension's increasing "freedom" nullifies its complexity. In fact, all higher dimensions each only have three regular polytopes.

    A Geometric Approach

Differentiating between figures in the first few dimensions can be quite a task. One of the simplest ways to view higher dimensions is by slicing. A simple three-dimensional figure, a cube, can be sliced parallel to its sides to give a square, a two-dimensional figure. A hypercube, the cubic equivalent in four dimensions, therefore can be sliced to give cubes.

When you take a sheet of paper and look at it from the top, you see a rectangle. If you turn in on its side, you see a line. Between the rectangle and line, you see rhombuses, parallelograms, and other quadrilaterals.

When you try to draw a cube, notice what shapes are used to create it. If you drew a cube from a corner view, you would need parallelograms and other quadrilaterals. From that view, you won't see any squares, although squares are what make up a cube. This strange phenomenon occurs anytime a polytope is rotated. So when you look at a hypercube rotating, don't expect to see just perfect cubes, rather look for distorted ones.

    It’s from here.

The above link you posted is awesome!!. I clicked on the hypersphere. Check that out.....Thanks a bunch.

  4. I am serious............................ welcome to the debate.

The vastness of space is the truth I want people to understand. But the point I am raising is that up to now from the past 10 thousand years all the mathematics and science that we got they deal with closed systems or limited things and systems. We have not got yet language' date=' philosophy, theology, mathematics and sciece that can deal with boundary less, borderless, and limitless infinitely open things or open systems. We need to develop science that can deal with things at infinity level. It will help us conquer infinity and populate infinity and exploit infinity!

    hebrewboy[/quote']

I think I know what you are trying to say, but to say We need to develop science that can deal with things at infinity level. It will help us conquer infinity and populate infinity and exploit infinity! has got me stopped cold.

I have a very open mind....too open as a matter of fact....and I think science should reach out for everything, but for what purpose is it to pursue something that is beyond the scope of human comprehension and can never be reached. I understand what infinity means, but I can't imagine it.

And, I don't think science is dealing with "closed" systems or "limited" things. We deal with what we can comprehend to the max.

    Bettina

  5. Thanks

I intend to stay a bit longer than you might think. Theologians and Philosophers are unable to explain infinity. So it is up to scientists to do the job. I hope you will be patient and bear the infinity debate.

Ok...If your serious, then I will join in.

What you are asking is difficult since we humans cannot comprehend things that are in a massive scale. For example, a science teacher once said something in class that I will never forget. He said "One thing humans cannot comprehend is the vastness of space" and he's right. The word "vastness" stuck with me. How can you imagine how large space is. You can't, and infinity is well beyond that. An unreachable end.

    Just my thought. :)

  6. Ok' date=' supposedly, there are supposed to be . . . what, 9 dimensions? Well, regardless, let's just say that the number of dimensions is [x'] for easy reading. I propose this: What if we're just living in a world with [x] dimensions that we are simply not aware of? What if there are no dimensions, that that the word 'dimension' is just a concept we apply to geometrical measurements of objects in space? Are there really more dimensions? If there are, what are they? In my opinion, dimensions are variables in the world defining an object. So, with that in mind, couldn't you say that color and smell are dimensions too? No, of course not, at least, not for smell, because smell is really your olfactory receptors responding in a certain way. Color maybe, in terms of wavelength and how things are perceived through our eyes . . .

To answer the most precedent question: A 2-d world doesn't seem possible to me, at least, atoms as we perceive them or any other form of matter, no matter how small, could possibly exist within them, because everything has matter. So, by that reasoning, a 2-d world is nearly impossible.

Maybe a 3-3 world, with really big w and l values, but an atom wide H value . . .

    Maybe not.

Whether a 2d world is impossible or not, I want to understand how it could function if it was possible. The article I'm reading about the 4th dimension requires me to understand how I would teach a 2D being the meaning of a 3D world. How I would get him or her to comprehend it even though he cannot see or understand the concept. I am compressing the 3D world into his. Once I can do that, I can apply it to try to understand the 4th dimension concept.

    It is a kool experiment.

  7. Well, I saw her again today, and I told her I'm feeling different. So, I have to take another blood test :(. We talked again for another 45 minutes and a ton of questions/responses flew by as she kept typing. I told her I was sick again when I found more news about Jessica, but she didn't say one word about it. Eventually she sat back and discussed how the chemicals in the brain work and how the pills I'm taking don't work that fast. etc etc. She wants to see me again, but may refer me to a psychotherapist friend of hers. Just what I didn't want.

She let some major words fly over me, and talked about how my brain sees an event, my emotions rise, then my mind builds a story to fit, then applies it to the event causing me to become depressed. She said some people can do this very accurately and I may be one of those people.....or something along those lines. I don't know, I just wasn't listening that well even though we talked a lot. She is nice, but she doesn't come down to my level. All this is difficult to understand.

When it was time to go she came up to me and said point blank that I'm not a mental case since I used that word to her more than once. She wanted to me to get that straight from her and I have to keep taking the pills even though I feel different. Those 45 minutes seemed like 15 this time. Not like last time.

Hope you don't mind, I feel good telling someone this.

  8. are dimentions not just metaphores? why do they have to be actuall things? i have width' date=' height and length, but i also have energy, mass and velocity. why are the width, height and length concidered as 'dimentions', whereas energy, mass and velocity not concidered dimentions? to me, it seems strange to assighn 'dimentions' to the directions in which things can exist. my personal thinking is that stuff exists, and stuff has energy. the whole x, y and z thing is convienient for discussing [i']where[/i] things exist, but there are no actuall x,y and z 'dimentions' as such, in the same way that time is a useful metaphore for discussing the change and rate of change of matter, but there is no actuall 'dimention' of time.

actually, could he drive on a table if he was only 2D? if you imagine him to exist in the x and y directions, then to be on the table he would have to be a certain distance above the surface of the table, ie a certain distance above the table in the z direction, in which he does not exist, so i dont think that hed be able to travel on the table, as such. he might be able to travel in circles through the surface of the table though.

well, this is my first forray into quantumn strangeness, so sorry if none of it made sence

Thats Ok.....I am giving him some thickness....like a piece of paper so I could understand it better. But...you raised a good point. What is he really? What would a 2D world be like?

  9. When I started this thread, I classified people into three types, and started an argument. This was my first forum and I had a lot to learn. I got yelled at a few times, (rightfully so) chastised by my dad (again rightfully so), and had my ideas stepped on too but now I'm learning to tolerate the opinion of others when it disagrees with mine.

However, I've also learned not to back down unless someone offers proof that contradicts my opinion, and in the case of the three classes.....good....evil....and monsters, I will keep my original opinion. This thread got heated when a little 9 year old girl got stolen from her bedroom, sexually tortured for over two days, then when he was finished satisfying himself, he strangled her with a rope. The latest news from this man says that he told police that he buried her alive. Well, this has set me off again and I'm at a new depressed low. I feel sick.

Where am I going with this? Nowhere. It just makes me feel better to know that my classification of this person as a monster is correct (IMO) and deserves the death penalty, and no matter how many posters, though I respect their feelings on the death penalty, and those who wish to save him, It is my humble opinion as a human being, that I wish this person to pay the

ultimate price. I wish this person dead with all my heart. A slow burn in the electric chair would make me feel wonderful. I would love it if they would invite me to see it because the last thing he would see would be me holding up that little girls photo.

Whats funny is that I am empathic to every living thing. I feel pain when others feel pain, I cry when others cry, and I cried for her, but I would feel nothing for this monster. Not one tear would leave my eye.

I accept what your all thinking about me, because I know there are millions of people who think like I do about this man, and for that I feel good. My classmates feel that too....

  10. I ,for one, didn't mean any offense by asking you to make sense. I really wanted to know what your trying to tell me. Your thoughts sounded very interesting and intriquing, but I must be one of the ignorant ones you mentioned for not getting it.

    I wish you well...

  11. Would you prefer me to use incorrect English? This language is flawed and a crazy concoction of meaningless phrases!

I have no use for the. If teh was to be stricken from the world i would be a happy man. However' date=' if it pleases you, i shall never use it again.[/quote']

I'm going to test you....I'll be watching your every word now.. :)

    Bettina

  12. Dont get me started on the English language.

You just used a word you wanted to get rid of..... I see you still find it useful ;)

  13. It's a little extreme for scientists to claim not to understand certain things, particularly gravity, and yet people go around refusing anyone the right to pursue further analysis.

I don't see that at all......We just want you to make sense. Try coming down to our level of thinking. I like what you say, but I can't understand it. I'm trying.

  14. Hey everbody

i have a sociology paper due in two weeks' date=' and the topic is school shooting and violence.

i came acroos some very cool statistics but i can't seem to get a hold of any theories that i can cite

if anybody has info on such theories such as causes of school shooting or its consequences on society, please let me know the author or if possible the website/book i can find the info

also any original ides about causes are appreciated.

    thanks[/font']

    1. Depression

    2. Being bullied or repeatedly dissed by classmates.

    3. A bad home life

    4. Want to make a name for themselves.

    5. A member of some cult.

The first three I would bet would be a catalyst. The last two, can run alone. Luckily, nobody in my school seems that way, but the only way we can protect ourselves is to report any funny things we see. Teachers are always too busy to pick up on this stuff, but we can. If you noticed a boy or girl acting strange or threatening, report him or her.

Thats all I can think about.

  15. look no offence intended.

I just want you to be happy.

Yes that's the problem with medication; it has more than just the desired effect.

Will you do me a favour?

will you spend at least half an hour a day doing some physical activity that you enjoy that gets your pulse rate up to over 110 bpm.

that’s going to give your brain a rest' date=' make your metabolism work better , make you sleep better and reduce your overall stress level.[/quote']

Ok....I do jog and ride a bike, but maybe I'll do more.

    Just 4 U.....and U have nvr offended me. :)
