  2. Any chance you have a link to that documentary?
  3. Very much not cost effective for amphibious landing support. Anything that homes in on radar can be confused by radar jamming and in a time of attack ships can also go radar silent (as can awacs). ABM's do exist and a battleship sized platform, possibly nuclear powered could be fitted with things like railguns, Lasers and other power hungry systems and could be fitted on a large ship and used to defend the Carrier group. While these systems can be mounted on smaller vessels they do demand huge amounts of power and ABMs would need a large magazine to hold multiple missiles. No, the new guns do not depend on the length of the barrel, the shells are self propelled please see the links in the OP.
  4. I would think as a platform for shore bombardment, air defence, ABM, and anti ship missiles.
  5. Not an independent AI but AI supplemented humans are portrayed.
  6. A taste of armageddon was a good episode, it did show that possibility for sure. A battleship was once supposed to be used for fighting other ships but that seldom happened, only once or twice in WW2. Mostly they were used for shore bombardment and in that role battleships excelled but long range weapons now require them to be too far offshore to really be a threat. A big gun that is accurate out to as much as 120 miles (some reports indicate it's more like 250) would put them further out of danger and not endanger aircraft pilots. Increased accuracy would make this a devastating weapon while new close in defense weapons would allow the battleship to survive in modern ship to shore and ship to ship battles.
  7. I would say you could be correct, the newest aircraft carriers do seem to be going in a direction that needs fewer men. But I haven't seen any huge shift towards those technologies in war ships. Can you provide some information on that?
  8. Could the advent of long rage ramjet powered artillery shells, Laser point defense, nuclear power, and light weight armor as used in aircraft carriers be used to bring back the battleship? New technologies would seem to indicate that a powerful battleship platform could again be an important part of the Navy, the idea of either redeploying old battleships and or redesigning the old battleships has been around a long time but vulnerability to air power and missiles has always stopped the idea from fruition. New technologies could turn that around. This development might be part of this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trophy_(countermeasure)
  9. Anyone else read this book? Vernor Vinge does a great job making you believe in an apocalypse brought about by a private contractor working for Livermore Labs. A great read, I'll discuss his premise if anyone is interested.
  10. Which is also an illusion...😇
  11. Beautiful little shark babies have been hatched out of eggs laid at the aquarium.
  12. I know most of you are aware of the wastewater spill in Florida, if not there is a short video at the end of this you can watch. My concern is that it keeps coming up that this waste water is radioactive, is it, and if so why? It would appear this wastewater is being dumped into canals that are channeling it into Tampa Bay, how dangerous is this really? I've heard so many conflicting reports it seems to be either an environmental disaster or just harmless. Does anyone have any evidence other than what the authorities are giving or the people who claim it is a disaster are giving? Some truth should be brought out on this and if there is deception on the part of state and federal agencies who do we believe?
  13. That beautiful voice! That beautiful face! Those beautiful... um, shoes 😇 I don't know why that first one repeated.

  15. Are we talking about "Eyeball Planets"? It seems there might be life on such worlds or there may not be on ice ball worlds. I have wondered if such planets might actually turn very slowly as Mercury does in our solar system due to tidal influences from other further away planets. This might result in a world where a dry desert slowly rotates to the night side while a glacier rotates into the sun from the icy side and melting ice turns to water and it transported by weather to freeze out on the night side.
  16. I was alluding to the idea that if we do find life on say Mars and it turns out to be genetically identical to "Life on Earth" we couldn't really show it wasn't transported by panspermia to Mars from Earth or vice versa. This would apply to life using water as a solvent anyplace in the solar system. But if that life used different chemicals than Earth life then we would have a second genesis for sure.
  17. Not what I meant to insinuate but that is correct.
  18. Hynek was the USAF's resident sceptic and debunker for Project Bluebook in the beginning but later became an advocate of scientific study of UFO's. Agree, but what if it is genetically identical to life on Earth? We are left in the same place we are now. More interesting would be life on Saturn's moon Titan using liquid methane and ethane as a solvent. Such a discovery, two separate genesis's of life in our solar system, would indicate that life is quite common in the universe. Seems to have, still trying to figure out why I keep getting pneumonia, but that will be sorted out I am sure now that they have become aware. Me too, be a hard opportunity to pass on for sure. J. Allen Hynek
  19. Both my sons play trumpet, they are quite good at it and made significant money as teenagers playing them.
  20. If I remember correctly that was one reason why J. Allen Hynek was considering the "Parallel Universe Hypothesis" say that that could explain how they do seem to flit in and out of existence but it doesn't really explain much more than aliens or magic really. Almost certainly true but if intelligence is rare then we might be more interesting than we think. It should be noted that we study ants quite closely and even try to influence them by using their own communication methods, ie pheromones. I really don't think we can necessarily assume that, I've even seen some ideas from real scientists about this and they were interesting at least, both slow boat colonization of objects in the outer solar system by aliens and even previous civilizations from Earth have been suggested. This has a name, the "Silurian Hypothesis" Not a serious suggestion really but it highlights the limits of our knowledge. I waffle back and forth on this, our own rise to "Glory" involved some amazing coincidences, then again intelligence is strongly selected for in evolution and arguably has occurred several times in the history of the Earth from octopus to dolphins to elephants intelligence seems to have some real survival benefits. Technology is not unknown either, from birds to octopus to dolphins some primitive tool use is not unknown either. Use of fire seems to be limited AFAWK to hominids but several species of us have used it as well. Yes, this is true, I have often wondered if this bogs us down sometimes but I see no real way around it. Me too, a cancer scare this year kinda made me wonder if I would be around much longer to see these whishes answered. “There are a lot more sightings than have been made public,” he told host Maria Bartiromo. “Some of those have been declassified.” You are correct, this is where I got it.
  21. I'd give you a plus but evidently my ability to do that has passed the daily limit. I'm not sure I would believe it if the military admitted aliens were anal probing rednecks because they can. I think it will be interesting to see what happens, I really think it will go away or simply be classified but this will be telling. To me this would suggest the military is making it up. It would be extremely cool if it turned out to be some sort of natural phenomena all along! Did anyone check out this link in the article? https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/astronomer-avi-loeb-says-aliens-have-visited-and-hes-not-kidding1/ I'm not sure who this guy is, SwansonT you might be able to answer that better than me.
  22. Good point but the process of elimination has been used to limit what they can be unless as the article states the military knows and is not telling. Still doesn't make them alien of course but the real question here is does the military know or not. It has come to the military having to officially lie to congress/public or tell the truth, I think they will lie. The trick will be trying to figure out which they are doing.
  23. Is there a difference between not telling something and lying to hide it? My brother outed me to my elderly mother, a extreme fundie christian, as an atheist. There was no good reason to do so other than his own peevish need to try and hurt me. My mom immediately confronted me, and I do mean confronted, and has caused a huge rift between us, not to mention several other family members, for three years. She is in her 80s and in poor health, I was too taken aback to think about whether or not to lye and choose to tell the truth. I have wondered for sometime if I made the wrong decision, my stance on god was not a big deal to me but to her it was devastating and results in me hearing her beg me to believe to avoid hell every time we talk. An intolerable situation that should never have happened and the truth hurt people in both directions. Sadly I think I may have to agree with that. Not always, sometimes others control the truth and use it to cause harm. Yeah, the jeans make you look fat.
