Agreed, although a few recent encounters with a couple of Mormons; did taint my opinion a little. I met them, initially, as I was walking the dogs (nothing better to do) so when they started their ‘pitch’ I was happy to shoot the shit (along the lines of, I respect your chooses but I’m an atheist, so no thanks) but after five minutes of sales pitch and charismatic banter, I decided that accepting his card, with a promise to look into it, was a pragmatic solution since “nothing better to do” is time/interest limited. The consequent meeting was much less charismatic (not even a smile) but a polite enquiry as too my thoughts on the follow up material, to which my continued assertion of atheism was met with disinterest, they just got on their bikes and went??? There after they cycled past completely ignoring my friendly smile; leaving me to wonder, are they on commission?

Thanks for the attempt to soothe my grief, ‘overtone’, at the news but my sorrow was more that such a delicious irony isn’t true (yet).

Whilst I basically agree, I do have to say, pride in your tribe is a very useful attribute for survival; which is why it’s so often used as a motivator for those with lesser insight.

I think it more relies on scale rather than detail given that every empire has failed.

Think about it, if everyone is a citizen then the unemployed are just government employees on a retainer. Being unemployed isn’t what a school leaver wants, they have plans, they have ambition and they even have dreams; what if you knew, deep down, that those plans and dreams are impossible: You have choices, of course, crime or apathy/cynicism/hatred, of course a few can defy the odds but that just blinds people (hard work and dedication and you can be him/her) and hardens them to the underlying problem/suffering. That would almost make a great topic, does history repeat or rhyme?

I’m starting to think Phi’s right because I always thought you deliberately missed the point. I’m sure that assuages your guilt or maybe it’s a chance to sneer at the people you so obviously look down upon. It’s so childish to think you’re immune from such a fate; perhaps if you’d tasted the bitter pill of such poverty and hopelessness you’d be happier to pay a reasonable tax; perhaps you’d even stop blaming starving people for wanting food.
