  1. Much like 'cold comfort farm' is the same as 'sense and sensibility'... you've missed the point...
  2. The contradictions come later, they all start off with a reasonable philosophical approach to a contented life, when the understanding of that philosophy is churned in the generational washing machine or the silver plate is polished of the base metal, it's very human to assume this generation is smarter than the last; their phone's couldn't leave the house... 🙄
  3. Double our efforts to do what? Read more?
  4. He also wrote: "If the literature we are reading does not wake us, why then do we read it?" Depends on who you read, Douglas Adams argued that the universe actively sought to prevent that... 😉
  5. Indeed +1 But it's also not the job of religion, religions only job is to provide a platfrom from which to be... Contentment, is the operative word and religions have far more to say on the subject....
  6. No it doesn't, it just doesn't invoke a god as punishment for those who stray from the prevailing moral attitude, instead it provides karma as a brake to the potential of humans towards nihilism. Besides, most religion's are just another philosophical POV.

What I find astonishing is people like you, you admit that he's lying to everyone but somehow he's not lying to you; talk about burying your head in the sand, at least an ostrich has the excuse of a brain the size of a pea... 🙄
  8. Who is this 'we' of which you speak? I have a smartphone and google is my friend, but I've no idea how it 'all' work's, I'm not part of the 'we' that created it; it's just part of the culture that I've grown up in. How does this knowledge base, increase our awareness of morality? You're conflating human nature with a particular culture, that's just politics. The problem with politics is, it can only improve at the speed of our slowest member...

Or possibly starred in the Netflix special...

The number of people trying to cancel him, it's like he wrote "A catcher in the rye"...
  11. Indeed, when all things are considered and both sides of the equation are cancelled out, what remains are the politics...
  12. What makes you think that we're smarter than them? We haven't evolved a greater intelligence, all we've done is evolve our understanding, based on their's; don't throw the baby out with the bathwater... 😉
  13. Two things can be true at once...
  14. Indeed +1 But we also have to acknowledge that morality is a subset of ethics and we have to accept that nihilism, without a god type brake, can eat into a reasonable societal law...
  15. They can be, but even I'm getting bored, especially with such a flawed premise 'did god intend', from a religious POV is utter bollox, since it gave us free will
  16. There is no irony in the quote, it was taken from a letter to his sister; he, I think, recognised that some people (his sister) aren't capable of understanding the truth that he's seen. Being a disciple of truth is hard work but never a waste of time, although it can be very frightening. There's nothing wrong with being ignorant, but how does one go about being intentionally ignorant without lying to the world and oneself; for instance, if you're walking down a train track, happy in a day-dream, your blissfully ignorant when the train hits, OTOH if you see the train and choose to ignore it, you won't be having a happy day-dream...
  17. Maybe you didn't understand the answer or maybe you didn't want to; self-referential is a good place to start when thinking about what others maybe feeling/thinking. It may not be helpful to you, but most philosophies use it as starting point.
  18. This is every kind of bollox... 😣
  19. Indeed +1 But it's not entirely ignorant bc google told me; what hurts my brain is, why people want more than they need...
  20. Indeed, that's kinda the point I'm making; it's a strange word to base a philosophy of humanity on... After all, we are one external, almost catastrophic event, from a re-definition of the word religion; and we start praying/preying for a faverable el-nino...
  21. I think you've misunderstood my point, humanity is necessary for science to exist (as we know it), but if we assume our continued existence, why would it be true that science, a single facet of human thinking, continue unabated in the choas of human politics? "look on my works, ye mighty and dispair"
  22. Why do you have faith in these word's? "It's wrong to call a banana a fruit, it's very wrong to claim its a car"...
  23. I'm happy to acknowledge your right to neg my post, but without a reasoned argument, I really don't care; but thanks for participating... 🤒
