    Food myths

Spinach was always believed to contain huge amounts of iron compared to other vegetables - thus the whole thing about Popeye and his strength. Apparently this is a myth due to an error by people who done early studies on the iron content in foods - a slip of one decimal place in the publication made people believe it was 10 times richer in iron than it was.
  2. There is so much in your thread that is just basic misunderstanding. What level are you in terms of qualifications? I don't know how old you are, but I would reccomend doing some kind of course in the physics of mechanics or chemical physcs or something. Are you planning to do a degree? As an example: This is no different to walking across a carpet in nylon socks. When you touch some when they get a shock. Same as rubbing a ballon on a jumper and then sticking it to the wall - it is due to static electricity. It's effects are well known and documented.
  3. Hey Doctor, is that Thermometor warm, oh, oh, oh, NO, ANAL RAPE!!!! ............................... I am going to appologise for that one it was a bit bad It was not my fault It was all the fault of that Sayonara dude
  4. Man, I eat chocholate nearly every day! I prefer to make my own burgers anyway -- get a frozen quarterpounder and fry it up with some onions and cheese and stick it in a bap! mmm. I'll admit to the odd 'roll up' some evenings afterwork, before bed or round a mates house. 40 a day YT!!! That's not good for you.
  5. lol.. chill out o squirrel of wrath I know what you ment - I just wanted to make sure:D.
  6. Thanks. I reckon spider silk is the future for now then. I read once about how difficult it was to farm Golden Orb Spiders. They tend to eat each other when kept in confined spaces. I bet it is not impossible though! Just enough to do some research and maybe make one or two jackets. We discussed this in length and thought that it could actually be a viable proposition for small quantities for research. The biggest factor for not doing it we decided was my completely uncontrollable arachnophobia!
  7. Also - how is this research carried out? Do they all fill in a questionaire on what their sex drives are like? The male ego can be greater than a womens, (generalization) so how many men will put down on a questionaire that they have a low sex drive? Men tend to boast/exagerate their sexual prowess, where women are a bit more descreit at times. This might effect the results alittle.
  8. Putting it in plants does sound a bit more humane than mutating cows and goats - I was wondering about the ethics of it from the off. Second? What is first then? I though it was the drop thread from a Golden Orb spider? (I've met Goldn Orbs face to face - - don't like them at all!)
  9. They provide a force..... but they don't ignore or defy gravity. Its like saying I picked up the bag, so I ignored gravity. I didn't ignore it, I overcame it with a greater force. The origional post claimed that at 40feet, gravity is diluted due to the re-arrangement of wan der waals forces within the body - set up by internal frictions inside your body during the climb. This is why I said it was rubbish. Sorry if you thought my post was rude then - It wasn't an attempt at bullying. It's just that you get alot of people claiming the impossible and asking for money to make it happen. Happens alot. Unluky or stupid people that fall for it may well part with their money and regret it later. On hoverboards and centripetal force: You've got me thinking (and this almost certainly won't work!! Just speculating) What if you had a series of balls on chains spinning very quickly under the board. Instead of them spinning round and round, their path is impeaded so they have to spin up in little semi circles (so that the ball's path is the same as one of those indoor running tracks - oval with raised ends) When the balls go round the raised ends there would be some upward force applied - however this may be cancelled out when the ball returns back to its origional path (even if its return to horisontal motion is smoothed out). WOn't work, but interesting to think about.
  10. Eldar, Witch Hunters, Daemon Hunters, Tyranids, 40K Rules, Yea!
  11. You are ALWAYS on about food !!! I guess in Finland you need to eat loads to build up an insulative fat layer to protect you from the cold no? My worst eating habit, so my friends tell me, is that I smother everything in loads of salt. I think I am addicted to the stuff - I get withdrawal symptoms and feel week without it. No so bad these days, but still get cravings sometimes.
  12. The effect has to be psycological. That stuff about Van Der Waals forces if complete rubbish. Perhaps your post was ment to be a funny joke, if so I missed that one, sorry. So how much is this going to cost some unlucky chump then?
  13. Quite - as ajb said g/g or a/a are equal to 1. So you can multiply anything by 1 anytime you like without changing the equation.
  14. Looks like you are dividing through by mg! So - put the whole lot in brackets, then take the mg outside. Leaving the 1 on the LHS. (because 1 x mg is mg) To check it out - take whats in the brackets and multiply by mg! You are left with eq.1. mg x 1 = mg and mg x v^2/rg = mv^2/r
  15. Just as a note - when shooting a pigeon with a .22 air rifle, you go for a head shot. This is because the soft but tight downy feathering on their breasts tangles up the spinning pellet and it doesn't even get through deep enough to penitrate the skin. Usually the .22 pellet has more killing power than the .177 for most things, but the smaller pellet is best for a shot into the pigeons chest as it gets through the downy feathers with less tangling. There was talk a while back of spider silk bullet proof jackets. Anyone know of any advances on this this lately? (EDIT: latest Update? http://www.usatoday.com/news/science/biology/2002-01-21-spider-silk.htm)
  16. I do not believe so. For example, the mean average is '4' from 5 samples. You could have 2, 2, 4, 6 and 6. You could have 1, 2, 4, 6 and 7. You could have 1, 1, 1, 3, 7 and 7. In each case the average if 4 and the number of values is 5, but there is no way of knowing what the min and max values are - they are different in each case.
  17. The Delorian from Back to the Future - complete with Mr Fusion Upgrade of course. A light saber (with thin beam setting - useful for boring holes when your hammer drill is not man enough for the job) Kira and Dax from Deep Space 9.

  21. I heard that reindeer eat them without too much problem. Apparently, if you drink wee from a reindeer that has metabolised the fly agaric then you can get all of the trippy effects without the death. Some tripes actually feed their reindeer fly agaric for this purpose - or so I've heard. -- just checked by typing "fly agaric reindeer" into google - seems to be true. Maybe you could try drinking the squirrel wee to see if it has the same effect as the reindeer's?

  23. Was about to say the same thing before IA beat me to it. Cooking causes a chemical change. Lustre is physical (how shiny). Smells are chemical - I was was going to give you this: http://www.scienceforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=33167&highlight=smell - where we discussed smells before.
  24. Just a guess, as I have no idea about such things really: - Can you grind up some dry fish bones and send the resulting powder for elemental analysis, then compare with pork, lamb, beef etc? You could then try this with different speicies of fish. There is alo the obvious physical and visual differences, i.e. they are very thin and bendy compared to the others.
  25. LoL! i posted about this on another forum I go to, check out these responses! ChaplainGrimlight wrote: coke and nuts? what kind of vending machine is that! lol Popogeejo wrote: A COKE-O-NUT MACHINE.
