  1. Oh that's easy! 2 cm sorbathane cusioning round the inside of the suit and you'll be fine! ;-) (I was going to say the same) .... although - what about the pressurised flight suits for high G-forces? They could improve over the4 next few decades to be incorperated into a Iron man suit. The worst part of the film is his first flight in the hashed together metal suit he builds in the terrorist camp.. As soon as it crashed I thought "DEAD!".... but he gets up and kills everyone. lol.
  2. Apparently if a young girl falls asleep inside a fairy ring they turn into a hag... I have often wondered about the science behind this... more feasible that controlling the weather with brain power though. No brainer.
  3. The velocity DOES change.... The higher - the more force due to greater velocity... The constant ACCELERATION means it is getting faster constantly with the force on it... (until it reaches terminal velocity... which it won't dropped a few feet above your book). Thus the pen dropped from higher up hits the book with more force, as per your observations. Hope this helps. KE = 1/2 M V^2 might help also... the faster the pen, the more energy.
  4. Have you tried a different grade of whitener? Maybe talk to your TiO2 supplier and see if he has any advice.... if not then try some different grades of TiO2 from some different suppliers and see if the problem still persists. Get some samples in and mix some tests up in the lab to see if you can replicate the problem with other grades. Also - I'm not sure how you can end up with 'too much water' in the mix - the guys should follow a strict batch mixing sheet or procedure which will require them to weigh out an exact amount of each of the raw materials going in. Adding extra water should only really effect the viscosity/flow/rheology of the system. If it is THAT sensitive to batch to batch fluctuation that a few kg extra water discolours the product, then the mix/formulation is not robust enough and you will need to do a little reformulation work as I suggested above - contact your TiO2 supplier and ask him for some advice or some samples of other grades.... if he can't help you then talk to someone else.... there are numerous suppliers of TiO2 that will bend over backwards to help you out and get you business I am sure. I hope this helps - let us know how you get on. Regards, Dr P.
  5. It says that they do not actually collapse to a singlarity... which I have always thought impossible anyway - that's how the maths describe them (bit over my head... probably if I studied it better anyway). There is real evidence of BHs - we can SEE where they are by observing the pertubation of surounding planets and stars.... their orbits/celestial paths 'wobble' due to the gravitations effect from the BHs. We recently (10 to 20 years) showed that there is a Super Massive BH at the centre of every galaxy... which hints that they might have something to do with galaxy creation..... I am no expert on this though. ;-)
  6. Isn't it the case with chemistry and the periodic table that we have loads of historic 'rules' atoms follow.... which then nearly always have a list of 'exceptions' to the rules that follow? Physics always seemed a lot more logical with rules that don't break.
  7. I was going to say the same - you CAN'T use numbers in an equation to be variables - you have to use symbols because the numbers have actual values. So: Your theory is A + B = C
  8. I know it sounds a bit rubbish, but, one of the most useful general books I've ever had is the Penguin Dictionary of Chemistry (they do a Physics, Biology and General Science one too I think). I know it sounds crap, but if there is something you need to know.... look it up in there - you'll be suprised at how informative it is. Used it many times throughout my degree and Ph.D.
  9. Deffo an eel of somekind... I first thought 'moray eel' too.

  11. A six inch nail and a nine inch nail? What are they for?
  12. I always said that you were a Labour voter! ;-) Thank God that idiot has gone. "We need to borrow and spend more money to get ourselves out of debt".... what an idiot. It is a recurring cycle over here - Labour gets our country in DEEP debt, then the Tories come in and get us out of it.... the public get fed up with the lack of spending and vote in a labour government who get us in ddebt again...and so on..... let's hope we arn't too far gone for Cameron tpo save us this time.
  13. there are many ways of doing things. Displacement, electrolysis....(don't think it would need to be molten would it? you can do it from solution I think). Not sure what the 'correct' answer is, but drying in a vacuum oven or in a dessicator under Argon would get it dry it without oxidation.
  14. With any luck they will be so far advanced that they will have solved all moral issues and run some kind of thing like the Prime Directive so they won't interfere. Probably wishfull thinking though.
  15. He's just being racist/xenophobic with that remark..
  16. Because no-one takes any notice of anything he says at all anymore, he is a moron and we've all had enough of his BS - as he will find out next week when his government is voted out of office.
  17. Doesn't the funding for research come mainly from industry in most cases? Or at least shouldn't it? At least they'll cut the red tape and wastage - if we haven't got any money then we can't spend it. When they get get the coffersback up I assume they would re invenst funds in the future. The future is what is important, if they current govenment continue wasting money without intellegent planning and spending then there wont be any money left for any funding for anything.
  18. There was a live tv debate the other evening between the three leaders. Brown (labour) kept on spurting false stats and attacked Cameron (Conservative) for his proposed cuts to health and education. Cameron defended the policies by explaining the cuts were going to be to the extreame wastage of money that goes on unelected expensive quangos and unnescessary midle management that the current goverment have put in place (the fact Labour threw billions at the NHS is admirable - the way it was wasted was shameful). Clegg (Liberal) came out well because all he did in my opinion was slag off the other two saying that they have had their chance over the years and blown it. Well, I agree wrt the Labour party but the Conservatives have a proven track record for getting the country out of trouble after the Labour government has screwed it up time and time again. That's what we need now. It is easy fot the Libs to look good at the moment - doesn't mean I agree with their policies though - I'd like to keep the pound and be more tentative about handing the proposed powers over to European union. I like the Consevatives plan to cut out the extreame wastes of money that the current government have introduced in the way of unnescessary burocracy - I'll vote for the Conservatives for sure.
  19. When I was a boy it was one of my favourite planets! I think we should make it an honoury planet for old time's sake.

Pretty sure that this isn't anything to do with expansion of air. It is because the oil is burning at WAY above the boiling point of water so the water turns to gas very quickly and expands/explodes outwardly rather violently taking the burning oil with it. Telling people to try it in their lab is really dumb advise, even if you had given them a list of safety precurtions that they should take - which you haven't. If I saw you doing something as stupid as that in my lab I would not let back in - ever.
  21. You have already been told that you are confusing punishment with abuse. Can you not understand the difference at all? Physical tourture IS banned already - mild punishment for wrongdoing is not and should not be.
  22. It gave me 52% Mainly because it took me 4 guesses to get Q9 right and the same for Q10. Q10 is unfair!
  23. This reminds me of the "Prometheus" pellets you could get for air riffles. They were hard steel, for penetration, with a lead filling for weight and punch. They had a thin plastic sheath to allow the riffling of the barrel to grip and spin it.

    Star Trek Wars

Picard by a long way, but I'm going to vote for Sisko because he is a close second in my book and no-one has voted for him yet. Sisko would have done it. He punched Q in the gob.
