  1. He knew that at the outset. He chose to carry on. It's a pretty robust reason really, and it's not an "excuse".
  2. But you never really know when it does. So, we lower ourselves to moral failure... just in case something that never really worked, suddenly does. Because the victim knows that lying is an option.
  3. If you don't get that outcome- and you won't- all you have done is torture someone for no reason. You do understand that people lie, don't you?
  4. Torture only has one outcome- the person tells you what you want to hear. That's because, if they don't, you keep hurting them until they do. If the outcome is hearing what you want, then there's no real point to the torture. You can always simply pretend that you did it- with the inevitable outcome. They said what you wanted to hear. The outcome is just the same. So you can get that outcome without torturing people. So, what are the circumstances where it's right to do something that's obviously bad, and never necessary?
  5. Two years from sequencing and a year after launch, the vaccine is still doing a fairly good job.
  6. They are doing https://www.pharmacytimes.com/view/details-of-pfizer-s-investigation-into-an-omicron-specific-vaccine-for-adults-aged-18-to-55 But, in the meantime, the current vaccines are better than nothing.
  7. It was privatised but, since the Tories only privatise profits, not risks, the taxpayer will still foot the bill. (assuming it ever gets paid)
  8. How plausible is that? How many languages would it take?
  9. Which is interesting. They seem to forget that an answer to "what would Jesus do?" is get very angry and kick out the bankers. The political Right wing (and that's essentially all politicians in the USA- I'm not sure about Canada) do not generally follow the views set down in the Bible.
  10. "The feminism movement is leading to a new culture war today?" It is hard to see how a 100 year old (and then some) movement is causing anything "new" today. But it's easy to see how the current crop of "famous for being famous" pundits could be stirring the pot today because they want to get paid today.
  11. They are different materials. Talc is a hydrated mag. silicate Mg3Si4O10(OH)2 One formula given for amosite is Fe7Si8O22(OH)2 crocidolite is Na2FeI3FeIII2Si8O22(OH)2. And so on...
  12. Plot twist: unknown to you, the police have picked up the wrong man and you are proposing to torture someone who is actually innocent, or at least, unaware of the child's location. Does that change your view, or do you torture them anyway?
  13. How hard did you look? The IR spectrum of CO2 is all over the web. The mathematical model is this one. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer–Lambert_law The complications due to the spectrum varying (slightly) with pressure and temperature are also well understood.
  14. That's called "Driving without due care and attention".
  15. As far as I can tell, they are still at it. https://news.sky.com/story/bette-midler-west-virginia-governor-jim-justice-raises-dogs-backside-in-the-air-and-tells-actress-to-kiss-her-hiney-12527782
  16. Exactly the same as anywhere else. Why mention India dehradun? Also, am I allowed to refer to this here? https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=83427.msg659171#msg659171
  17. Maybe; maybe not. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitch_drop_experiment
  18. Well, it's going to take millennia to do anything noticeable and much longer to do anything "interesting", so, even if it's a billion dollars, it might only be $10 per year on average.
  19. From time to time people ask why the US immigration forms ask you if you plan to over throw the government by force. People laugh at this- after all- any actual revolutionary would simply lie about it. The point of the question is that, if it tuns out that you were planning a coup, the government can throw you out of the country for providing misleading information on your visa application. That's it; no court needed- no appeal. The thing that most people fail to recognise is that it's a general rule. If you get caught lying they kick you out. It's one of the more sensible things the US govt does. Most countries will do it, if they have the slightest reason not to want you in their territory. And Djokovic did not fill in the paperwork correctly. What did he expect to happen? I heard he intends to participate via Zoom.
  20. You might want to try dry ice, or even ice and salt because they are cheap.
  21. Imagine I arrange the apples in three piles of 1, 8 and 8 apples. The two piles of 8 apples have the same weight. Imagine that I swap the single apple for one from one of the other two piles. The mass of that pile of apples must still be the same as the other pile of 8. But that's only possible if the 1 apple has the same mass as any of the apples in that pile. And that's also true if I swap the singleton with an apple from the other pile. In fact, there's no significance to the two piles of 8, you can consider them as a single pile of 16. The mass of that pile must be unchanged by exchange of any pair of apples. That's only possible if they all have the same mass.
  22. "Are Vegan's, a help or a hindrance to, our future?" Vegans may well be less of a problem than people who misuse apostrophes.
