What are resources to prevent school shootings and mass shootings?
When I first got my license to carry a concealed weapon, I experimented with carrying a handgun on my body or in my car. I didn't intend to carry it generally but wanted to be comfortable doing so if a reason ever arose. What I found was that if a potentially risky situation arose while carrying, while I was thinking of my potential responses, one of the responses always had to do with getting out my gun. What surprised me (and scared me a bit) was how easy it was to think about pulling a gun to address a problem. I completely agree with you that there is not enough 'mental distance' between having and using a gun.

Exploding Pagers Injure Hundreds in Lebanon
I'm convinced by the pro-Israeli contingent here. I'm also convinced by the pro-Palestinian contingent. In other words, I believe both sides behave horribly, and both sides are doing so for very honorable reasons. I don't see how either side can be embraced, or vilified, over the other.

The Official JOKES SECTION :)
Two gentlemen were applying for a job and the interviewer told them that they were both equally qualified. In order to break the tie he asked them both to write a short poem. The only rule was that the poem must use the word "Timbuktu". Whoever wrote the best poem would get the job. A short time later the poems were completed and the gentlemen were asked to read them. The first fellow recited his as follows: Over blazing desert sands, rode a camel caravan. Under azure skies of blue, destination, Timbuktu. The interviewer was impressed, then asked the second fellow to recite his, and it went like this: Tim and I a hunting went, found three women in a tent. They being three and we being two, I bucked one and Tim bucked two.

Bulletproof Airplanes
Not too far out of place. On the A-10 the main gun is mounted off center so that the barrel of the gun is lined up on the center line of the plane. While it will not cause catastrophic damage if the barrel is offset from center, it is enough of a difference that if the gun were placed differently it would lose significant accuracy.

Exploding Pagers Injure Hundreds in Lebanon
Are you referring to Palestinian suicide bombers used in retaliation?

Exploding Pagers Injure Hundreds in Lebanon
I tend to believe this was a targeted attack. While the Israelis don't seem all that concerned about collateral damage, I don't believe they were just hoping that some of the pagers might be carried by members of Hezbollah.

Can you be a scientist and still believe in religion?
I see your problem here. "Good reason" is not the same as "moral".

Can you be a scientist and still believe in religion?
We have laws here that dictate the maximum distance allowed between joists in floors, and how much tax I have to pay on my trailer. How are these "moral codes"?

Short story (split from Was Einstein a Christian?)
Well, from the perspective of 'it made me laugh', yes I did like it. I'm unsure why you think scientists would like it though. It is about the most unscientific story I've ever seen.

Woodworking: Amateurs, Craftsmen, & In-Between
Thanks, I'll get the pic back out there as soon as I figure out what the issue is. We have a simple, rustic cabin on a river in southern Missouri and this building is just to give us more options. So far it's mostly been used for sleeping and for kids to play in. We did the same thing as you with the footings. I've learned all about the options that Simpson supplies. I had someone make the trusses as I didn't know how to calculate strength requirements then design accordingly. I think I spent more time figuring out what I needed and buying supplies than I did actually building. Here it is...

What are resources to prevent school shootings and mass shootings?
Have you read one single thing I've said? How does an 11 year old girl with a poor home life 'take action' to prevent physical and emotional abuse in some school that cannot even afford text books for all students? NOT EVERYONE IS LIKE YOU. And now you continue to blame the victim for 'acting out' and using the abuse as an "excuse"?!?! People like you make me want to vomit. Please stay out of the way while the rest of us try to address real world problems.

What are resources to prevent school shootings and mass shootings?
The simple reality is that teens and pre-teens rarely have the ability to cope with relentless physical and/or emotional bullying. In addition, many of the people most in need of security systems for their homes are lucky if they can afford to eat every day, much less shell out money for a security system. Again, you seem either clueless about life on earth or are willfully ignorant.

Can't believe you are doubling down on blaming the victim. You seem to be a step removed from real life. Not everyone has adequate coping strategies or even the ability to execute them if they do have them, yet you are saying they have the "responsibility" to cope with bullying. IOW, if they can't cope, you are saying it is their fault.

So your first suggestion is telling victims to just deal with it. I have a feeling we wouldn't be friends IRL.

Is framing issues in terms of "men and women" necessary in the 21st century?
Yes, if only those pesky victims would learn to dress in such a way that men don't wish to assault them. If you keep arguing in threads that women aren't really victims of wage discrimination, violence from men, etc., people will start to assume you are a misogynist.

Natural of dog food, which is better?
My son's dog eats ice cubes as treats. We've fed him as many as 15 in a row before he quit waiting for more.

Is the problem of Hell actually a problem?
That's a bit cynical and also a little bit insulting. I do nice things for people nearly every day and only rarely kick old ladies to the curb, and none of it is due to fear of retribution, now or in an afterlife.

Short story (split from Was Einstein a Christian?)
I thought historical fiction was real history, say, the Civil War, but then adding dialogue from Grant and Lee that was invented, but consistent with their real characters. Alternative history being, again say the Civil War, but exploring what would have happened next had Lee won at Gettysburg.

What are you listening to right now?
I don't know if it is more impressive that someone can write that, or that someone can play that.

Can you provide a couple of examples you've seen where this trend holds true?
