  1. A surprising new discovery shows that certain plants, such as tobacco, "eavesdrop" to help themselves survive. When sagebrush is attacked by insects, the plant gives off odors to warn other plants of the coming danger. Other sagebrush plants detect these odors and prepare by releasing chemical defenses. It turns out that tobacco "eavesdrops" on the sagebrush, and detects these odors. It then waits to give off arsenal until the insects attack, thus saving vital energy for important tasks. http://news.yahoo.com/s/space/200603...YwN5bmN hdA--
  2. Many reasons: 1) An explaination is needed. 2) The legendary sea serpent is known to reach very large sizes, like over 100feet. 3) It is definitly possible for a sea serpent to exist. Those immediately came to my mind, but there are many more.
  3. Darn, I didn't think about that. Can it moved?
  4. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060309/ap_on_sc/species_survivor I have always found it amazing that we are finding species that are thought to be extinct, but I'm blown away by this; a species that has actually been alive for 11 million years when it was thought to be extinct all that time. Diatomydae, a squirrel-like species, has recently been re-discovered from 11 million years ago. Before this, only fossil records showed the rodent existed. This may serve as more evidence that many different cryptids, like the Loch Ness Monster for example, may be animals from millions of years ago.
  5. I was sooooooo messed up the last two days... I was bored and, I don't know how to explain it. I really need to get out more.
  6. B is wrong. I'm not sure which kingdom is though. C is wrong. There were single cell organisms before multicellular organisms came along, so animals cannot be the first organisms to live on earth.
  7. The idea of lake/sea monsters has been around for a very long time. Besides' date=' I think the myth was thought up by the Canadians. Bascule, I believe there is evidence, just not the kind that first comes to your mind. Photographs have been taken, and there are dozens of eye-witnesses. Just because no dead bodies have been found, or another thing like that doesn't mean something exists. I've never seen you, but it doesn't mean you don't exist.
  8. 3) No one knows how to even test this accurately. It needs to be looked at more often to even have an idea...
  9. I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything about bessie, the lake monster in Lake Erie. Do you think it exists? Why or why not? Personally, I don't see how a serpent that is 30 to 40 feet in length could get into Lake Erie. It would have had to come from the ocean, but the only way you can get to Lake Erie from the ocean is by going upstream, through a man-made river, and over many large waterfalls. If bessie does exist, it would have had to get there a different way which I fail to recognise. Last, there is no physical evidence that I am aware of. On the other hand, there have been numerous sightings, including a report of bessie capsising a boat and killing three people. So what do you think, does bessie exist?
  10. That's just stupid. We need the information as soon as possible, it can save us in the future. Also, even though they are taking parts from the canceled mission, NASA has probably lost a lot of money that could have [inderectly] helped make our technology more advanced, making our lives easier.
  11. Scientists have recently discovered a large, 19 mile (31 kilometer) crater in Egypt. The astroid that made the crater was probably about 3/4 of a mile wide. An impact like that would have destroyed everything in hundreds of miles. For comparison, the Chicxlub crater that was left by the asteroid that may have killed the dinosaurs is about 100 to 150 miles (160 to 240 kilometers) wide. The crater was discovered in satellite images by Boston University and researchers Forouk El-Baz and Eman Ghoneim. El-Baz named the crater Kebira which means "large" in Arabic. http://space.com/scienceastronomy/060303_big_crater.html I find it amazing that we are still discovering things like this today. I hope research continues on this subject, it may save us from astroids in the future .
  12. seagull: robery Next word is bank. **I thought of the yeti for himilayas too**
  13. Okay, here's how this game works: I will start the game by saying a word, then the next person replies by saying what they think of when they hear the word I say. Then that person says another word and the next person replies with what they think of, and so on. Here's an example: X: Amphibian Y: Frog [that's what the next person thinks of]. The next word is animal [that's what the next person wants you to think of]. Z: Dog [that's what the next person thinks of]. The next word is yatiyatiya [that's what the next person wants you to think of]. Ok, I'll start: Ball
  14. If anyone has never had bloop, I found a link for it. It's 16 times faster than the original recording, though. http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/vents/acoustics/sounds/bloop.html It sounds like a bubble rising to the surface to me, but that probably cannot be picked up by two sensors.
  15. 1. 5614 2. Ooo, toughy. Probably IMM. 3. Not sure, but I find ecoli's posts interesting. So ecoli. 4. Bascule 5. insane_alien 6. I haven't been here long enough to say.
  16. I here my voice when I read SFN and other things on the internet. However, when I read stories I have different voices for different people in my head.
  17. Oh, that stinks. Well, I'll stop arguing about a giant snake and move onto something else. Does anyone know the approx. size of the thing that made "bloop"?
  18. I guess you are right now that you put it that way. It may be best that we don't know everything about earth.
  19. The largest snake known is just over 48 feet long. However, this was just published in an Indonesian magazine, and no one knows for a fact. Anyway, perhaps an anaconda, which is usually about 18 feet long, found its way into the Atlantic Ocean millions of years ago, and slowly evolved. Witnesses of giant snake-like marine animals report gills on the sides of the animals. So maybe, if the witnesses were not trying to create a hoax, they did evolove to take oxygen directly from water... I hope that if there is something, we will find it and prove that it exists, but we are destroying ocean life faster than we can adapt to new technology .
  20. No and yes. I don't know much about this, but I do know many subconscios decision are being made when we see someone of the opposite sex. There is some sort of smell too.
