I cant seem to find a semiquantitative test for nitrates in solution when in prescence of nitrites. The only one I can find involves Hg. Any simple solutions (no pun intended)? This is for my fish tank. No need paying the fish shop for chemicals if I can do it myself.

Are there any non toxic coloured gases at all? I've been searcing the internet to find one but haven't come across any yet. I've been putting together a short play where one of the actors has to breathe in a small amount of "poison" gas and i was hoping I could have the gas that they breathe in be green but any colour would do really. Any suggestions?

Hello. Can we make a list of typical household and over-the-counter chemicals that are obtainable without "prescription' in supermarkets, hardware stores, but not from chemical specialty suppliers ? Like: Sodium bicarbonate Rubbing alcohol Acetic acid (vinegar) Turpentine Acetone Gasoline Kerosene Diesel Naphta Butane Sodium chloride (salt) Paint thinner (whatever it is) Sodium hipochlorite? (the water softener stuff) Epsom salt Borax Graphite (pencil leads) Oils Methylethilketone Cyanoacrylate Please add, rename properly and do corrections... Miguel

I was watching a show bout firefighters. To burn off flammable underbrush in forests so they dont ignite later, they filled ping pong balls with a chemical and dropped them from helicopters into the area that they wanted to burn the underbrush in. When filled with the chemical, the balls would ignite with a few seconds delay, i think it was 7 seconds. Does anyone know what the chemical could be?

Well yesterday in chem class my teacher mixed powders together and they began to mix into like a paste. However he doing this on a board with water under the beaker. When he lifted up the beaker the board was frozen to it and he measured the temp of the solution and it was -40 C..... I was really cool... Now i was wondering are there two chemicals or more that can mix together as liquids and freeze instantly... So as soon as you put the liquids together they are completly frozen?

Are the smallest particles quarks and leptons? (which make up a quark?) So are quarks and leptons the smallest particle known (observed)? Are there theories that support these particles are the smallest? It's been bugging me how there can be "the smallest particle." I think if we were to cut/crush/heat the particle enough it would be divided into subparticles.

Hello Everyone, I am a student from California State University East Bay (formally known as Cal State Hayward). My group and I are currently conducting market research on spectroscopy as part of a course requirement in our entrepreneurship course. More specifically, we are studying the uses of infrared technology in institutions, pharmaceutical industries, and other research industries from a marketing point of view. We have created an online questionnaire in regards to the applicable uses of infrared technology. The questionnaire contains 17 short questions plus a comment section at the end for any additional information you may be able to provide. The questionn…

Can anyone suggest a titration (or other experiment) to measure the acidity of orange juice? The main problem that I'm faced with is that using an indicator, it is hard to notice the colour change since the orange juice itself is coloured. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

In my chemistry clase I had to proform an experiement that proved avogadro's law Equal volumes of gases under the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules. no i need ot know why this is significant in the relm of chemistry as a conclusion i am not a quimico and have no idea why the volume of 1 mole at STP is 58.016 cm3 of Hydrogen gas is important

Have any of you had a professor that told you, and the entire class, on several occasions "This will not be on your exam" only to make at least a quarter of the final exam exactly on what he told you he would not put on it? I had that happen to me this morning for my organic chemistry exam, and I just wanted to know if this prof's just a jerk, or if this stuff happens more often than I think.

Hi. What compound would be the most convenient to mix with mortar to expand it to a very lightweight pumice type end product with non-toxic microbubbles? I say micro because I believe that if the bubbles are somewhat large, would surface too easily before the cement cures. Thanks, Miguel

I dont think that this is the right forum, but I figured that since you have bunsen burners in the chem lab......... Anyways, I was wondering, is there anyway to attach one of those jets that are in the lab onto a mini propane tank? If so, where can i obtain a jet. I cant stand using my alcohol burner anymore, it can barely boil water. Thanks!
