    Holmium (III) Oxide exhibits some pretty dramatic color changes (see this attached photo), but I am uncertain about the mechanism that causes this change to occur. The literature on it is slim, and what exists on the subject is dense and jargon-y, as well as being behind a paywall that my school doesn't subscribe to. Can anyone here explain this phenomenon to me?

  2. Hi There is a big hole in my understanding of integrated rate laws, and I've been having a hard time finding what it is that i'm not understanding. I would assume that it's a very small idea that i'm missing. Anyway, here's my problem, I would assume that I will say some false statement at some point, hence me getting weird results. Say you have the reaction A + B --) C And let's assume that the global order of the reaction is 2. We are also given the initial concentration of A aswell as the contentration of A at a certain point in time (t) The integrated rate law would be 1/[A]=1/[A]0+kt. We can use that equation to find a value for k, since w…

  3. Hello everyone, I have never done a post on this forum, but something strange occurred to me today and I was hoping to find an answer here. While looking outside of my kitchen window, I saw something fuming from the concrete ground outside. When I approached it, I realized that a small hole the size of a BIC pencil was burning and fuming. It might have been 5cm deep while the concrete floor is about a feet big. When we tried to drown it with ice, it did not work the melting ice started fuming as well. We put baking soda on it which seemed to have stopped it, but 5 minutes later, it started fuming a little bit again. It clearly slowed it,…

    Greetings. Has anyone tried making mega-huge bismuth crystals? I have tried following the methods of theodore gray (cf his website) but I don't want plain old crystal clusters on the bottom of a pan. Some fellows on ebay are selling beautiful large crystals such as http://stores.ebay.com/BISMUTH-CRYSTALS-UNLIMITED_W0QQssPageNameZl2QQtZkm My single crystals exhibit faces of maximum 1cm square edge. Has anyone acheived larger than this, and if so can you describe scale and methods used. What metals doesn't Bi alloy with? How do you minimise formation of oxide and hence degradation of your 99.99% Bi? I try growing crystals in a stainless steel beaker, approx…

    I am a bit confused as to how to assign oxidation states to metal ligand complexes. why does the titanium in Ti(NMe2)4 have an oxidation state of +4 but the platinum in Pt(NH3)4 has a +2 oxidation state? Do you need to know how many valence electrons the metal atom has first? Thanks Nick.

    Hello community. I personally have no friends in real life that are scientists, or are well knowing of chemistry. Anyhow, I am needing assistance of what I need to make orgone / orgonite devices. I read a short tutorial and it states ... I have no clue as what the "activator" is or even what resin to use. Here is the website I am reading the tutorial from. https://www.lifeenergysolutions.com/orgonite/

    This is my guess: Mn + H+ + NO3- -----> Mn2+ + NO + H2O Yeah, I'm sure there's something wrong with it. I just started RedOx today.

    Hello, Whenever I face a problem of the following type, I am always baffled as to which answer is correct. This is because of conflicting answers given by my professor, and the answer given in the answer scheme, so even I do not know why or which answer is correct. In the question in first picture, I chose B) as the answer since the stoichiometry matches . However according to the answer scheme, the correct answer is E). When I emailed my professor regarding this, he instead made me confused even more by stating that the answer is C) and not E) or B). Consequently, in the question in the second picture, I was utterly confused on which answer is correct. B…

    Hi I'm looking for exothermic reactions that are either reversible by electrolysis or the application of current. Alternatively the reaction can be self reversing if it can be triggered by application of minimal current.

  17. Started by Mexi Chemia,

    Some days back I bought some pool pH lowering granules to use the Sodium Bisulfate in them to make strong acids like Nitric and Hydrochloric. this is my question, I don’t know how pure is it, the company is called Chemia and it is from Mexico so you may not know it or find it, the box says it is NaHSO4 with is the chemical I named but i don’t know how to know how pure is it, Is there any way to know like density of solution or something like that, but I don’t want to mix it with water because it is really hard to dry again. And I would also like to know if this reaction would happen, because it makes sense to me NaHSO4+NaNO3->Na2SO4+HNO3 because I k…

    Hello, I have to separate and determine the masses of Zn, CuSO4 and SiO2 from their solid mixture. I though maybe I can add water to the mixture so Zn(s)+CuSO4(s)-> ZnSO4(aq) +Cu(s) CuSO4(s)-> Cu(aq)+SO4(aq) And maybe filtrate and add HCl? Please help, I have Lab Session in two hours.

    I've been trying to find chemistry sets for X-mas presents but keep getting references to crystal growing kits. I'm not knocking crystal growing but it's not really the same thing. Any suggestions on key-words? I can not remember the name of the company that made the one I had as a kid. I probably never paid attention to it I'm sure. Any help would be appreciated.
