  6. Did anyone see Cold Case “Superstar” on Mar/26/2006 on CBS? Anyone feel like joining me for a laugh about how they seem to think you can kill someone by ‘lacing’ their towel with sodium nitrate? Don’t these people have a science advisor? (in case you didn’t see it, it was about a case where a tennis player gets killed by a towel laced with ‘poison’, sodium nitrate.) Oh! But the killer was a chemistry major, she must have known sodium nitrate was ‘deadly’! Sorry this probably isn’t worthy of a post, but I just had to vent about this ignorance.

I developed a program for balancing chemical equations. A beta-version of this program already was available, but now I present a new version, which allows the use of preserved groups (useful for organic chemistry) and the use of isotopes. The program can be used for balancing any chemical equation, e.g. it nicely balances equations like the following: [ce]..K2Cr2O7 + ..KCl + ..H2SO4 -> ..KHSO4 + ..Cr2O2Cl + ..H2O[/ce] The program determines the coefficients, needed to make it correct: [ce]K2Cr2O7 + 4KCl + 6H2SO4 -> 6KHSO4 + 2Cr2O2Cl + 3H2O[/ce] The program can also do computations from moles to grams and vice versa and it computes weight ratios,…

  8. Hi. ¿Any modern progress in the subject, can it be done? Some rubber parts change their properties with time or exposure to something, turning soft and gummy... Is it because they were poorly vulcanized, or they are not rubber, or had a different manufacturing process ? Miguel

I was wondering if there is some kind of equation out there to solve a problem like this. How many milliliters of a 25% solution of potassium chloride must be added to 8 milliliters of pure potassium chloride to obtain a 35% solution. thanks

when you mix Manganese (s) with Hydrogen (L) the manganese remains at the bottom of the test tube, why is that? Is it because the hydrogen solution is fully saturated?

  20. I am starting this thread as a place where people can leave their thoughts on the terrible explosion which occurred on the 24 March at the National College of Chemistry, Mulhouse, France. My thoughts go out the friends and family of the dead Professor and the injured students and staff. I also would like to pay my respects to the dead professor for his work in researching high risk procedures for the advancement of science. I think we all need to the remember the triumphs of science despite the risk over the years. It people like the professor that died that has enabled the human race as a whole to learn and advance. My salute to scientists in all areas, may your good …

  21. I would like to know which type of plastic is best for storing water. PETE, HDPE, V, LDPE, PP, or PS? Mainly worried about the plastic chemicals leeching into the water over a long time of it. Yeah, yeah, glass is best, but it can break. And other safety or things I should be concerned about.

Okay, so this equation appeared on my last chemistry test. I wrote the following: NaF(aq) + HCl(aq) --> HF + NaCl(aq) Apparently my answer was correct except that I didn't know what phase the HF would be. I asked my chem teacher and she said she didn't know (sad huh?). So I have to resort to a science forum for the answer. What would the phase of the HF be? I thought it would be a gas.

  24. Im thinking of just using my 120v house electricity... is it posible? or way to dangerous, because i would assume 120v of AC would produce hydrogen and oxygen faster than 12v 300ma of DC. also one time i mixed a lot... and i mean LOTS of salt in with the water,. and it made a smell kind of like chlorine gas, accept less smelly and not green, what may have happend?
